Chapter 1200: Attack In The Park
So the entire feud between the two different Nekomatas were all caused by a sibling rivalry…
I turned to the girls and gave them a look and they shrugged at me, probably all of them already having an idea that this was the case.
I turned back to the prince and he went over to the stick to look at it with a far off look on his face.
“You know… Lady Aster… I know that I will one day have to take over all of this… And I will also inherit all the problems that my people have… What would you do if you were in my place?”
Well… I decided to give him my honest answer.
“I have no idea. I was never trained or even taught anything that would tell me how to deal with this.”
He let out a laugh, “Hahaha! I suppose it is unreasonable for me to ask you of this when I am the one who should be shouldering this responsibility instead of you, Lady Aster.”
He turned away from the stick to look at me, “Have you ever thought that you might be unsuitable for a role that you’re expected to play, Lady Aster? Like you don’t think you’re ready or you might just screw things up even if you were to try anyway?”
Oh right, he doesn’t know about me being the heir of the Nilm Family.
I cleared my throat, “I suppose Princ– Ahem… Sami doesn’t know about this but… I’m actually the heir of a noble family right now. I wasn’t prepared to take over the family yet which is why I’m out here exploring the World as a Mercenary instead. Eventually, I do intend to return home but right now… I want to be out exploring so that’s why I’m here.”
The prince tilted his head at me, “Oh? I did not know that… Does your Family Head not care? I would have thought that most noble families would not let their heirs run around like that.”
“Well… I am very fortunate to have a mother who is very supportive of this so I don’t need to worry. She is very long lived so there’s no rush for me to take her place right now. In fact, she encourages me to explore more.”
“Hmm… It must be nice. Sometimes I wish… No… I should not have that kind of thoughts… I was chosen for such a responsibility, I should not shirk that.”
Dude… I hate to say it… But did you bring us here for a tour or for you to trauma dump?
Because if I have to remind you, this whole thing was supposed to be your idea.
He turned away again, “Sorry for dropping that question on you, Aster. Shall we move to the next place? Or perhaps is there something you like to know about this location? I did have to study our history after all, though I will admit that the main reason why I’m even interested in that was because I’m interested in learning about all the battles we’ve fought in the past.”
I was just about to ask about the trees around this grove when I suddenly felt a bad feeling coming from the side.
My instincts told me that the prince was in danger so I immediately reached out my hand towards him and used [Light Forge] to create a giant shield to materialise beside him, big enough to cover his entire body.
A split second later, what looked like a throwing knife came hurtling through the air and stabbed into my light construct, the projectile actually burying up to the hilt before it stopped.
As though on cue, several black clothed people jumped out from the shadows and started dashing towards the prince, all of them armed.
“Protect him!” I shouted, already rushing to the prince’s side.
My girls reacted immediately as they moved to intercept the assassins, Emilia and Katsuki already dashing through them and slicing several of them up.
Despite that, none of the assassins slowed down and they kept rushing towards the prince, as though it did not matter how many of them died as long as they could get to him.
To his credit, the prince did not panic and merely materialised his sword in his hand as though pulling out of thin air, his nodachi already slashing downwards to deflect another knife that had been thrown at him.
The assassins were especially fast and a few of them reached him faster than I could, their blades descending down towards him.
The prince held his sword at an angle and it glowed for a moment before he swung his sword out with incredible speed.
“[Full Moon Slash]”
I felt a chill before a flash of frost blasted out from the prince, freezing all the assassins that had been inches away from skewering him in solid blocks of ice.
Not even a second later, lines appeared in the mid sections of the ice before the top halves were separated from the bottom halves with the assassins all split into two at the waist.
The other assassins still didn’t stop and my girls were already cutting them down but there was just so many of them.
Still, I managed to reach the prince and I slashed my own sword at another assassin that tried to leap at him from behind, cutting him down without mercy.
Just as I thought that these people were just mobs that we could easily defeat, I heard a metallic clang from the side, prompting me to turn to see Emilia’s sword being blocked by one of those assassins.
She tried to slash at him again but sparks flew from where he had parried her sword away before she got sent skidding away when he smacked his sword against hers.
He then tried to rush towards the prince but Katsuki stood in his way with her daggers, attempting a stab at him which he avoided by hopping back.
But from behind him, another two of them suddenly jumped out and ran past his flanks.
Katsuki tried to stop them but the first assassin slashed his sword at her, forcing her to defend herself with her daggers and preventing her from chasing after the two that just passed her.
Emilia managed to recover and catch up to the other one, stopping him from continuing his advance as she engaged him in combat.
The last one rushed straight towards me and I got ready to intercept him when a beam of light suddenly pierced through his head from the side.
As though that wasn’t enough, several bullets also pierced through his chest at the same time, killing him instantly as he dropped onto the ground, his corpse skidding for a good few metres before coming to a stop.
Thanks Lisa, thanks Minnera.
Even more of them suddenly jumped out of the shadows and the one that Katsuki and Emilia were fighting with seemed to be quite evenly matched with them in terms of speed.
I had no doubt that my girls would be able to beat them but it would just take some time to do that.
But against this neverending stream of assassins… We might get overwhelmed…
Should I call out my Shadow Guards?
No, let’s leave that as a last resort.
Eins, be ready to hop out the moment it looks like we’re not going to be able to protect the prince.
Also, how the hell did they organise such a big assassination plan without tipping anyone off?! And where are his guards?! Didn’t I see a bunch of people getting up in the inn to follow us?! Where the heck are they right now?! Do your job!!
Oh wait, I see them at the edge of the grove, they’re also fighting and holding back more of those assassins but there’s just too many of them…
They just keep coming even after we kill them! Look, the entire grove is already filled with dead bodies– Eh?
When I turned to look at the one I had cut down, I realised that the corpse seemed to… Fading away?
Wait… Are we being attacked by Shadow Summons right now?! But there’s still so many of them! Last I remembered, under normal circumstances, people should only be limited to one summon, right? I was the weird one for being able to summon multiple of them!
“These things are Shadow Summons!! Don’t hold back against them!” I yelled.
We hadn’t been completely serious in this fight because we were hoping to keep some alive to interrogate later but if we knew all of them were summons anyway, then there’s no need to hold back.
Almost instantly, the aura around my girls changed and they started fighting with their full power.
The other side seemed to know that their gig was up and gathered together for one final desperate push, aiming to break through our defenses with pure numbers.
Until I dropped a [Lightning Rod] right in the middle of them and electrocuted all of them in a single blow.
Then, as suddenly as they had appeared, all of the assassins vanished.
Seriously… Who the hell are they? They even attempted an assassination in broad daylight!
