Chapter 1283: There’s People Behind The Ones Responsible
I returned to the inn and explained what I learned to my girls when they returned.
Surprisingly, pretty much all of my girls already learned about it as well somehow during their own walk around the city.
It was all really coincidental where they either overheard some other Trasifs talking about it and then came to the conclusions themselves or came into contact with some of the priestesses who were also whispering about the situation amongst themselves.
Which means that this situation wasn’t as much of a secret as I thought it was… And it also means that it has been happening for quite a long while.
The girls initially wondered if I would get involved since there was absolutely no reason for us to deal with this in the first place.
But I told them that I ended up meeting Immana and that she was basically challenging me to deal with the situation so we now have a reason to deal with it.
I’m not sure how I should feel from the fact that my girls didn’t even look surprised when I told them that I met Immana and all of them pretty much just agreed that it was normal at this point.
Katsuki eventually returned to the inn and we were all gathered to listen to what she had managed to find.
All of us were gathered in the living room and I had Delmare seated on my lap while she cuddled up to me with the rest of my girls either seated beside or standing behind me.
“Mistress, I have returned with information related to the people responsible.”
“Impressive as always, Katsuki~ So who is it?” I asked, getting straight to the point.
“As Mistress might have already guessed, it’s an organisation of illegal slavers that were looking to remove the protection of the Tree of Life.”
I frowned, “Wait… Really? There’s a group of illegal slavers that are trying to destroy a country just to get some slaves?”
“While it is true that they are the ones executing this and causing the situation, they are not the real mastermind behind this but more of an agent that is executing the will of another group.”
Ah… Ok, so they were hired by someone else to do this.
“So who are the ones responsible for this?” I asked.
“There is another group of people that is made up of rich merchants and nobles from various different countries that have a vested interest in enslaving Trasifs.”
I was going to ask about the existence of such a group because I’m surprised that there’s even such a thing.
That was until Emilia commented, “Oh, that group. I should have expected that.”
I turned back to blink at her, “You know who they are?”
“Of course. It’s basically a club for the really rich or the really influential where it’s really a place where they just show off and fuck each other while also trying to push ideas that will give them more money or influence.”
I blinked, “So… They are also sabotaging each other then?”
Emilia looked confused for a moment before understanding flashed in her eyes, “Oh, I meant it literally when I said they are fucking each other, Boss.”
Oh… Ok…
I’m not even surprised that there’s a group of super rich people since that’s to be expected.
“I’m assuming that you were part of the group, Emilia?” I asked.
Emilia tilted her head, “Were? I still am, Boss. In fact, I believe the Madam is also part of it as well though she isn’t an active member.”
Oh right… I forgot that we belong to that category as well…
Come on, it’s not like I spend a lot of money in the first place… And I’m also not the one in charge of our expenses so I really have no idea how much we’re actually worth in terms of assets…
Before this, I only had around ten thousand Creas to my name you know? And that’s after working and saving up over all the years.
I turned back to Katsuki, “So basically a group of people within that club hired the illegal slavers to get rid of the Tree of Life?”
She bowed, “That’s correct, Mistress. From what our sources were able to gather, there is a specific group of them who really like Trasifs and have been indulging in the purchase of Trasif slaves ever since. Unfortunately, their interest in them goes beyond what they are allowed to do to slaves and they have resorted to purchasing them from illegal slavers instead.”
I grimaced, “Let me guess… The market cannot keep up with their demand and their bright idea was to try and destroy the Tree of Life so that the illegal slavers have a better time kidnapping and enslaving more Trasifs?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“And how are they trying to destroy the Tree? Is it to blow it up with Mana Crystals?”
“It was one of their attempts but it ended in failure so they have decided to try another method.”
So they actually tried blowing it up but probably realised that the amount of Mana Crystals needed to even destroy a tree that size would be impossible to obtain even if the illegal slavers had the backing of those rich guys.
“What method are they trying then?” I asked.
“One of the illegal slavers is a Comissar who is working alongside them and he came up with the plan to drain the tree of its divinity since he believes that is what was protecting the tree. They believe that if they drain the tree of its divinity, it might even wither and die on its own as a tree of that size is unable to survive without the aid of divine energy, Mistress.”
Lisa furrowed her brows, “A Comissar… Working against the Gods? How is that even possible?”
Katsuki turned to her, “It seems like the Gods do not actually care if the tree dies or lives. That’s why the Comissar sees nothing wrong in following along with the slavers’ plan and aiding them in this.”
“But… Isn’t illegal slavery something the Gods frown upon to begin with?”
“Not all the Gods are of that idea. There are some who are ambivalent about it and clearly this Comissar is serving one of the gods who hold that opinion.”
That seemed to be news to my girls.
Lisa made a surprised gasp, “The Gods don’t care about the tree?”
Katsuki turned to me.
Ah… Right…
I cleared my throat, “Ahem… Well… When I met with the gods earlier, they admitted that they don’t exactly have an attachment to the tree specifically. They created it but saw no specific need to protect it just because it’s one of their creations. From what I learned, they allow mortals to do what they want and even if it results in the annihilation of an entire race… It would not bother them…”
Emilia raised her hand, “Boss? What was Goddess Immana like? Wasn’t she the one who banished the Trasifs?”
“Ah… Funny you should ask that… Apparently it was one big misunderstanding… The Trasifs were initially housed inside her domain which was the In-Between Planes and the place kind of screwed with their minds so she had to kick them out before they went extinct… Immana asked Drebann to take care of them and that’s why Drebann brought them to the forest… Yeah…”
The girls all blinked at me after I just basically told them that the history they knew was incorrect this entire time.
I believe if I told some priest or priestess this information, I might even be branded a heretic or non-believer and chased out or something…
But my girls know that I would never lie about something like this so they already believed me without any need for me to try and convince them.
I turned back to Katsuki, “So… We know the group responsible right? Should we go and take them out?”
“It would certainly solve this in the short term, Mistress… But I’m afraid that the problem will return given time since the ones who orchestrated this would not stop just because we took out this group of illegal slavers,” Katsuki explained.
I tilted my head, “So… You mean we should just target the problem at its source then? Do we just go and kill those rich guys who are planning this?”
“That would certainly solve the problem, Mistress.”
“Wouldn’t that be a really big deal? These people are both rich and influential, right? If we remove one, the power vacuum that creates might cause some problems?”
“That is why we do not need to kill them, Mistress. We merely need to convince them that this is something that they should not do.”
Convince them? Does she mean to waltz there, knock on their door and tell them to stop?
That was what I was thinking until Katsuki took out her dagger to not so subtly flash it at me.
Oh… That kind of convincing…
Let’s do it then~
