With My System, I Can Even Tame Gods - Chapter 1397: Investigating strange rumours

Chapter 1397: Investigating strange rumours
“So you’re saying that things have just been disappearing in the mountains nearby?”
“That’s right. No one knows how it happens, but it’s happened many times already that it’s impossible to ignore.”
“Hmm, but it really doesn’t seem likely.”
“Well, it’s up to you whether you believe me or not. Just don’t blame me for not warning you when the time comes.”
“Another round over here!”
“Ha, ha, ha, you really know how to treat a friend!”
Lin Fan just looked at them with a friendly smile on his face as he tossed the coin over to the bartender.
He was really glad that a few drinks were all that it took to loosen the lips of these people. It really made his job much easier than if he had to search for these rumours on his own.
But then again, it was only because this was common knowledge that he was able to do this in the first place. Or else it really would have been hard for him to find information about this thing.
The reason that he had been sent here in the first place was to investigate the rumours of these people disappearing. Though Lin Fan didn’t really understand why Haku would send him to a place like this just to investigate this.
It felt like she was just getting him to do her dirty work.
However, it wasn’t as if he could say no to her.
After all, he had used the Laver Empire to help him investigate the remnants of the Dao Sect and they had helped him with the Highoak Family. At the same time, she had allowed him to keep the things that he had found secret.
Just these concessions alone were already more than enough for her to compel him to do some serious things. The fact that she was just making him run an errand like this and investigate a few rumours was already letting him off easy.
Which was why Lin Fan was here in the first place.
Talking to the people in the bar gave him all the information that he needed, but this alone wasn’t enough. After all, the things that people in the bar knew and shared openly were things that everyone already knew.
It wasn’t as if there would be any specialized information in this place about the incident.
So there were only two places that Lin Fan could go to get the information that he wanted.
The first place was one that fit perfectly for him since he had an identity that couldn’t be ignored in that place.
“S Rank Adventurer!”
The receptionist was shocked when Lin Fan handed over his Adventurer’s License.
It was only natural that she would be shocked when she saw this since S Rank Adventurers were considered the best of the best. They were rarely ever seen by any Adventurer’s Guild branch.
So it was a big deal for a S Rank Adventurer to suddenly appear.
But it wasn’t just the fact that Lin Fan was a S Rank Adventurer that shocked her.
It was also the fact that he was a solo S Rank Adventurer.
It was one thing to be in a S Rank Adventure party, but a solo S Rank Adventurer was a completely different story. It was someone that had the power of an entire S Rank party all on their own.
Before the receptionist could say anything else, there was a hand that came from behind her that slapped her on the back of the head.
The receptionist didn’t get angry at being slapped like this, she just realized her mistake the moment that she was slapped.
The one that slapped that receptionist on the back of the head pushed her aside with a sigh before stepping forward with a smile, “I apologize about that. If you wish to make a complaint, please feel free to do so to me.”
Hearing this, the receptionist gave a tremble before turning to look at Lin Fan with a fearful look.
Her mistake was revealing the fact that Lin Fan was a S Rank Adventurer like that.
Information like this should have been protected by the Adventurer’s Guild and not announced to everyone like this. So the fact that she had done this was already a big mistake on her part.
If Lin Fan wanted to, it would be easy for him to crush this receptionist for her mistake.
But it wasn’t as if he was here for this.
“It’s fine, there’s no need to worry about that.” Lin Fan said with a casual wave of the hand.
Hearing this, the receptionist let out a sigh of relief before looking at Lin Fan with a different look. There was a trace of interest in her eyes since he was a handsome young man and a S Rank Adventurer.
The only thing that she got in response to this was another slap in the head.
Then after slapping her in the head, the one that slapped her sent her off and the receptionist didn’t dare fight back against this person.
“I’m sorry about that.” That person apologized at first before changing their tone to say, “I am the guild master of this branch, so I can help you if there’s anything that you need.”
Lin Fan was a bit surprised since this guild master was actually a young woman that looked like a new receptionist herself. But for her to get this position at such a young age, it meant that she was quite the capable person.
However, Lin Fan wasn’t here for anything special and he didn’t want to attract attention.
Which was why he just said, “There’s no need for anything complicated, I’m just here for a bit of information about a few rumours.”
“Rumours?” The guild master repeated in a surprised and slightly confused voice, but she quickly adapted and said, “Alright, I can help you here. What is it that you’re looking for?”
Lin Fan didn’t waste any time in asking her about the things that he heard in the bar.
When it was over, he didn’t really seem satisfied with what he had heard. However, it didn’t seem like the guild master had any more information for him other than this.
In that case, there was nothing else that he could ask.
“Thank you for this. I’ll be leaving now.”
The guild master had a strange look on her face for a bit, before suddenly asking, “Is there something happening there?”
Since she was the guild master of this branch and there was a S Rank Adventurer asking about that place, she had no choice but to ask about this.
She naturally had information about that place as the guild master, but it didn’t seem important. It was only important if a S Rank Adventurer took note since it meant that there might be something dangerous there.
“It’s nothing special. I just heard some rumours about that place and I was curious about it.” Lin Fan explained at first before a trace of disappointment appeared on his face as he said, “It’s just too bad that I was wrong about this place. It seems that it doesn’t have anything worth investigating at all.”
An awkward look appeared on the guild master’s face when she heard this.
It was hard for her not to react since the place that he was talking about was technically under her jurisdiction. Hearing him say this about that place almost felt like it was an indirect jab at her.
So it wasn’t as if she could say anything in response.
Lin Fan didn’t mind that she didn’t respond since he had already given her the answer that she wanted, which was why he just turned to leave without saying anything else.
Even though Lin Fan was gone, the guild master just remained in the same place with a look of deep thought on her face.
“Guild master, is something wrong?” One of the receptionists eventually came over since the place that the guild master was standing was the receptionist desk. It really made it hard for them to work when their boss was just standing there.
The guild master didn’t say anything at first, but eventually she turned to say, “Get our people to pay more attention to that place. Even though he said that he wasn’t interested, there must be something special about that place if a S Ranker is interested.”
The receptionist didn’t move when she received this order.
Instead, she looked at the guild master with a worried look before saying, “Is this really the right move? Should we really be doing something behind the back of a S Ranker?”
In response, the guild master said, “This is a good chance for us to get on their good side. If we get any information, then it will be our chance to pass that information to the S Ranker.”
The receptionist still seemed a bit hesitant, but there wasn’t anything that she could say in response to this since she knew that the guild master was right. Information was important and it was a good chance to offer that to the S Ranker.
Though it also seemed like she was skeptical about what they would be able to find.
Not far away from them, there was a person that revealed a faint smile hearing them discuss this.
Lin Fan had moved away, but he was still close enough that he was able to use his spiritual sense to listen in on them.
It seemed like they were moving as he expected, but whether the guild master would really pass the information to him or not…
“Well, at least one bait is laid. Now it’s time for the next trap.”
