Chapter 438: Chapter 3: The Disheartened Little Priest
Soon, the news of the Saintess selection had spread within the Light Church.
Feiyan City, White Water Port, Moon City.
The three large cities in Lynch’s hands, along with hundreds of villages and towns within the Witch Domain, thousands of churches, monasteries, and thousands of Light Priestesses received this message.
And none of these forces failed to busy themselves.
Lang Green Town, a small town to the northwest of Feiyan City, with a permanent population of around twenty thousand, governed directly by an administrator appointed by the Council, with a Light Church built there.
The Lang Green Church was overseen by Father Yodel, a First Order Transcendent of Official Wizard Level, an apprentice of the Red-clothed Archbishop Saul.
At this moment, in Father Yodel’s office, Yodel was reading a document just issued by the church.
“Knock knock knock!”
A series of knocks sounded on the door.
“Come in.”
The door opened, and a nun walked in, wearing a blue and white Priest Robe and a round flat Priest Hat on her head, evidently a Light Priestess.
Appearing to be about seventeen or eighteen years old, her face was exquisite and beautiful, standing out in a crowd.
“Father, were you looking for me?” the priestess said.
Father Yodel put down the document he was holding, revealing a slight smile, and said, “Yes, Julia, I have something I want to discuss with you.”
The young girl before him was none other than Julia, who had once fled from the Ancient Ruins with Lynch, and had a brief encounter with him at a Wizard gathering as a young witch.
Julia had settled in Feiyan City for a while, initially registering as an adventurer to make a living, and later joining the Light Church, her life gradually stabilized.
With the help of the church’s resources, Julia’s cultivation gradually got on track, and over the years she steadily explored the path of the Transcendent.
Father Yodel asked, “How long have you been with me?”
Julia replied, “This is the eighth year, Father.”
Julia’s path as a Transcendent was not so smooth. She had already reached the Mid-level Apprentice rank while in the Ancient Ruins, and after settling in Feiyan City for a few years, she managed to advance to the High-level Apprentice.
Up to that point, it was still acceptable, but then problems began to arise.
After reaching the High-level Apprentice, she fell into a very long bottleneck, and despite constantly working hard on cultivation, she saw no progress and even showed signs of spiritual power regression, which made her quite anxious.
After much back and forth struggle, she finally meditated all 10 Will Runes required to advance to the Wizard level.
Lynch left no stone unturned in nurturing the Transcendents under his care; as long as they reached the conditions for advancement, they would be assisted with Su Ya Water for the Transcendent sprint. Naturally, Julia received Su Ya Water after meditating 10 Will Runes.
Unfortunately, she failed during her Wizard-level sprint, not only failing to break through the barrier but also regressing to the ninth Basic Will Rune.
She didn’t get discouraged and continued to focus on cultivation after returning.
However, sadly, her luck wasn’t too good. Although she reached 10 Will Runes two more times afterward, she failed without exception during the Wizard-level sprint.
Actually, Julia couldn’t be entirely blamed, as this was the norm on the Wizard’s Road. On this arduous path, the majority of Transcendents falter repeatedly at the promotion checkpoint, and only a minority manage to break through the barrier to reach the Wizard level.
Among the apprentices who came with Julia to Feiyan at the same time, very few have become Wizards; most, like her, are stuck at the apprentice rank and unable to progress.
By this time, the chance for an apprentice to advance to Wizard is already slim, as the effect of Su Ya Water diminishes with each use.
Most extraordinary influences give up on cultivating an apprentice after they fail the Wizard sprint once. Lynch, though more lenient, might still be unable to allocate resources for cultivation after three consecutive failures.
The Light Church generally sends these apprentices out to manage village and town churches, which is a euphemistic way of giving up on them.
Yodel said, “Have you been taking adventure tasks recently?”
Julia nodded, “Yes, just got back the day before yesterday, and I’ve arranged with an adventure team to try my luck at Dungeon No. 286 tomorrow.”
Julia is not someone who easily gives up. Since the church is no longer focusing on her training, she has decided to find her own way.
After being stationed at Lang Green Church, she would take adventure tasks from the Adventurer Guild to earn commissions whenever she had some free time, then go to the Extraordinary Market to buy resources, trying to continue fighting on the path of Transcendence through her efforts.
Yodel sighed, “You are truly a person who strives hard.”
Most apprentices like Julia have long given up; wouldn’t it be better to enjoy life with the time you have left?
After a pause, Yodel changed his tone and said, “But if I may be blunt, at this moment, your time and energy should be spent more on cultivation. Focusing on the dungeon greatly affects your cultivation efficiency.”
Julia said bitterly, “I want to, too, but I really don’t have a choice.”
Multiple sprint failures don’t mean there’s no way to advance; it just requires more resources, more time, and much more effort than an ordinary apprentice.
However, the contradiction is that after repeated failures, the church’s given cultivation resources don’t increase but instead decrease, and the time left for Julia to cultivate also diminishes, correspondingly reducing the chance of advancement drastically.
Julia sighed, “If I didn’t have to worry about resources, I’d love to stay quietly in one place, working hard to prepare for the sprint.”
She suddenly thought of the time in the Ancient Ruins, remembering those purebloods and Wizard Families with unlimited resources; thinking back now, actually, if only she could latch onto a big leg, even if it meant selling her dignity and degrading herself, perhaps it wasn’t completely unacceptable…
Of course,
Such thoughts were just fleeting.
Over the years in Feiyan City, she had mostly figured out the rules here; one cannot rely on anyone else here. A person’s upper limit is closely linked to their personal effort; it may not be absolutely fair, but achievements are indeed directly tied to effort.
Yodel said, “Actually… your kind of thinking isn’t entirely without an opportunity…”
Julia was stunned, “You mean?”
Yodel said, “The church is currently conducting a selection for the Holy Daughter of Light; I think you should know about it?”
After a pause, Father Yodel got straight to the point and said, “I’m intending to recommend you for the selection.”
