Chapter 456: Chapter 21: Frontline
Ancient Ruins Land, Southern Coast, Ancient Forest.
Adjacent to the southern coastline of the Ancient Ruins Land lies a vast, expansive primeval forest known as the Ancient Forest.
This forest has been a magic forest since the Arcadia era.
It is said that this place initially was just a bare coastline, but later, due to a wizard organization named the Elemental Research Association during the Arcadia era researching natural elements here, a lush forest was planted.
Because of tense relations with the Sea Clan at the time and its proximity to the coastline, this area was frequently disturbed by the Sea Clan. Thus, the Elemental Research Association built numerous defense magic arrays here, constructing a complete set of fortifications.
It is said that these fortifications were directed by a truth level wizard of Arcadia and possess a comprehensive set of rule systems that can oppose forces beyond the fourth-tier level.
Because it was far from the central area of Arcadia, during the extinction war that destroyed all of Arcadia, this place surprisingly did not suffer much damage. Later, when wizard families from the Ancient Ruins Land took over this area, they also took over the intact fortifications in the forest.
Originally, it was just left here for wizard organizations led by Starshine Castle to conduct some research on ancient magic, much like a sightseeing spot.
However, after the war began, Starshine Castle was forced into this Ancient Forest under the fierce attack of the Freemasonry Church and, at the brink of life and death, activated the defense magic array in this forest.
Originally thought to be just legend, when the defense magic array was activated, the wizards were once again shocked by the wizard civilization of the Arcadia era.
Even though millennia have passed, the fortification still unleashed its original astounding power, instantly obliterating the first wave of pursuers from the Freemasonry Church, which included many second-tier wizard-level existences.
Relying on the fortifications in this forest, Starshine Castle was able to survive, and subsequently organized various wizard families to retreat into this forest.
Currently, the Ancient Forest has become the base camp for numerous wizard families, with wizard families from all directions of the Ancient Ruins Land retreating here to stand off against the outside Freemasonry Church.
Ancient Forest, front line.
“Boom!”
A loud explosion sounded as a huge fireball erupted in the forest.
“Kill!”
“Eliminate these evil wizards!”
“Kill them!”
A fierce shout of killing erupted as dozens of Church knights, clad in armor and wielding Cross Swords, charged into the forest, engaging in combat with the enemy ahead.
In front of them was a magic array base.
There were several purebloods from wizard families stationed there.
After several attempts at a frontal assault were thwarted by the magic arrays within the Ancient Forest, the Freemasonry Church quickly adjusted its strategy, deciding to first dismantle the magic arrays before attacking the wizard families entrenched within.
To dismantle the magic array, one must first deal with its nodes.
This super-massive magic array covering the forest is composed of individual magic nodes. Once these nodes are captured, the magic array cannot be activated.
Thus, in recent times, the war between the two sides has been centered around seizing these magic bases.
“Quick, block them!”
“Where’s reinforcements? We need reinforcements!”
Only a few apprentices were stationed at this base. Facing the aggressive attack of the Freemasonry Church, they were visibly panicked, frantically activating defense magic while controlling nearby alchemy golems to obstruct.
The apprentices were too weak. Although there were some high-level knight alchemy golems nearby, the command was chaotic, and the orders were disorganized, unable to exert their full potential.
On the Church Knights’ side, however, their attacking frequency and rhythm were excellent, and their organization was very tight, with knights charging at the front, archers assisting behind, and Church priests casting healing spells on the side with clear division of labor.
The difference in command systems made the battle basically one-sided, with the situation quickly tilting in favor of one side. Alchemy golems collapsed one after another, and defense magic was layer by layer destroyed.
“Run! Run!”
“I don’t want to die here, I don’t want to die here!”
Seeing the Church Knights already charging up, the apprentices here were terrified, losing any will to resist, dropping everything in their hands, and fleeing into the forest.
However, in this moment of panic, their fate was even more tragic.
Just a few steps into their flight, the sharp piercing sound of wind came from behind.
Knights unstrapped the lances from their horse sides and hurled them, while Church priests cast magic on the lances, adding [Wind-breaking].
Iron lances, under the knights’ great strength and the magical help of Church priests, instantly tore through the wind and caught up with the two apprentices ahead.
The apprentices hadn’t even had the chance to cast defense magic before being pinned to the ground by the lances.
“Thud! Thud! Thud!”
The urgent hoofbeats sounded as another knight charged up to an apprentice, raising the Cross Sword in hand, slashing straight down at the apprentice.
’Splat!’
A panicked head flew high, and blood spurted upward like a fountain.
In just a moment, three apprentices at this base were killed.
There were originally five apprentices here; now only two were left huddled together, trembling with fear.
One was a male apprentice and the other a female. The male, chubby in build, was none other than Subaru, who came out from the Shadow Tower with Lynch.
Seeing the enemy charging up, Subaru looked at the girl beside him, gritted his teeth, stepped forward, raised his magic wand, and began chanting a spell.
Even after all these years, Subaru, despite not being particularly talented, had reached the mid-level apprentice stage, and his body had undergone several modifications, possessing power comparable to a high-level apprentice.
Soon, a giant fireball about two meters in diameter formed in front of Subaru, charging forward with a might of over a dozen degrees.
The fireball hit a knight accurately and exploded upon him.
Such intense temperature should have melted even steel, yet, at the critical moment, a light suddenly shone from the knight’s armor, and a transparent barrier unexpectedly appeared, blocking the fireball.
Subaru’s smile vanished immediately.
“Thud, thud! Thud, thud!”
The urgent hoofbeats rang intensely as the knights charged irresistibly.
At the brink of an inevitable death—
“The interplay of light and shadow!”
“Dawn!”
A clear and crisp spell voice resounded, and a beam of light descended from the sky, enveloping the knight in front…
