Chapter 457: Chapter 22: Name
After a while, the noisy forest returned to silence.
The ground, covered in chaos, was littered with corpses. The once proud Knights and Priests of the Freemasonry Church had all fallen.
“Count the casualties and provide timely treatment to our injured comrades.”
“Prioritize the severely wounded, regardless of bloodline or origin. Don’t let me hear anyone not following orders again!”
The valiant command echoed above the forest as Avery, dressed in a white robe, weaved through the battlefield, issuing orders in an orderly manner.
As the heir of the Tavendish family, it was certainly her responsibility to bear at such times. Since the war began, Avery had naturally been entrusted with a heavy responsibility, just in charge of the strategic defense of this area.
As she traversed the battlefield, Avery carefully inspected the treatment of each wounded person, leaving no stone unturned.
The ideology of bloodlines was deeply rooted in this land, even at this stage; many people’s minds still couldn’t change.
After each battle, similar wounded, those from wizard families who were purebloods always received timely treatment; while those Muggles with no background were left to die in forgotten corners.
The purebloods were used to being superior. To them, those Muggles were just expendables; dying on the battlefield was considered an honor and not worth wasting resources and effort to heal.
To this,
Avery trembled with anger yet felt helpless.
She clearly realized this mindset of the wizard families was severely wrong and understood it wasn’t about being stingy with resources but maintaining authority.
If Muggles were given the same resources and treatment, then wouldn’t they be no different? In the future, after the war when they might inch forward and demand more, achieve equal status?
Even at this point, the purebloods’ concern wasn’t about life and death, but about maintaining their superiority.
This is…
Utter stupidity beyond rescue!
Yet sadly, as a leader among the top-tier wizard family purebloods, Avery still had to uphold this system and fight for these fools.
She had tried to make changes, but due to complex relations, since the war began, she had repeatedly suggested letting go of prejudices, disregarding bloodlines and backgrounds, to work together and get through this crisis.
But all she received were everyone’s strange looks.
“Isn’t Erodion enough?!”
“Look at what those Muggles have done! Being lenient with them led to today’s outcome!”
Therefore, Avery could only strive for fairness within her responsible area, personally overseeing every step to ensure that both purebloods and Muggles enjoy equal treatment.
But…
Does her little effort really make a difference?
Or…
Can they really win this war?
They couldn’t even achieve basic fairness, and even now, many purebloods from wizard families still held grudge against Muggles fighting alongside them, blaming them for today’s mess.
Without even basic unity, Avery really didn’t know how they could win this war.
“Take it one step at a time!”
She shook her head to clear these messy thoughts from her mind since she couldn’t change anything. The best she could do was fulfill her responsibility, leaving the final result to fate.
Perhaps…
Dying on the battlefield isn’t such a bad ending…
“Miss Avery!”
At this moment, a Transformed Knight hurried over, saluting Avery, “There’s a wizard over there severely injured. The accompanying wizard hopes you can take a look.”
In the Knight’s eyes, there was no distinction between wizard and apprentice; those who mastered supernatural power were all called wizards by them.
Avery nodded, “Okay, I understand. Lead me there.”
Following the Knight, they quickly reached a corner ahead. Avery soon saw the apprentice the Knight mentioned.
A chubby apprentice was leaning against a tree trunk, slashed open in several places, with the worst injury in his abdomen, partially exposing intestines and internal organs.
Such injuries weren’t something an ordinary apprentice could heal.
“Hang in there, Subaru. Miss Avery is here.” A female apprentice stood by, continually comforting the wounded apprentice.
The apprentice showed remarkable resilience, staying conscious even through severe trauma. He managed a smile at the female apprentice’s words, “I’m… okay, Matilda…”
The female apprentice’s eyes welled up.
Are they lovers?
The scene stirred something deep within Avery’s heart, some buried memories emerging in her mind.
At such times, she deeply wished there was someone by her side, even if they did nothing but smile at her saying, “Everything will be alright,” in times of hardship and confrontation.
Even in hell, she wouldn’t feel sad.
Alas…
This could only be a thought…
“Leave it to me.”
Avery instructed the female aside and took charge, retrieving her Radiant Magic Wand from her Space Ring, then began to recite spells to heal the apprentice.
Currently, Avery’s strength had grown to the High-level Wizard stage, just short of the Mystical Realm…
With her background, simply equating efforts with the cultivation path meant little; the resources, knowledge, bloodline she had access to gave her many shortcuts to surpass ordinary apprentices.
Her current attained level depended more on what her family provided than personal effort.
“Dawn Healing!”
A huge angelic phantom unfolded behind Avery, with a beam of radiance descending upon Subaru, rapidly healing his wounds visibly, growing granulation, scabbing and knitting together.
Before long, the apprentice, who was just bleeding profusely and gravely wounded, recovered significantly. Apart from a pale complexion due to blood loss, there were hardly any other visible injuries.
Avery re-examined him, confirming nothing else amiss, before nodding, “Rest well for a few days; you should be fine.”
Subaru nodded pale-faced, “Thank you… Lady Karina.”
Avery was quite surprised.
Her full name was Avery Karina Tavendish. Avery was her given name, Tavendish was her family name, while Karina was her nickname used mainly by family and friends.
She took a closer look at the apprentice and realized that he seemed vaguely familiar.
Avery asked, “Have we met before?”
Subaru nodded, saying, “At the Fairy Tavern, you attended a banquet with few of us apprentices. Lynch invited you, and you asked us to call you that back then.”
Avery was stunned.
It was like something exploded in her mind, and scene after scene, which she deliberately tried to forget, began to replay rapidly in her memory…
