Chapter 459: Chapter 24: Thank You for the Time You’ve Given Me
Time stretched across the melodious steps and drifted away, and in the blink of an eye, several more years had passed.
Wizard Calendar 10109, autumn.
In the past two years, Feiyan City upgraded and renovated the Light Square behind the original Central Square. Besides erecting a statue of the Light Goddess at the square’s center, a series of bas-reliefs also were rebuilt around the square.
These were sculptures recording the history of Feiyan City, from the Guardian Saphiro’s arrival in this city, who eliminated the original evil wizard here, to the initial establishment of the Adventurer Guild, then to the first missionaries spreading the Light Goddess’s message, and the inaugural mass led by the first Holy Daughter of Light on the cathedral’s steps…
Feiyan City selected the finest craftsmen, using the most durable Basalt, spending nearly three years meticulously carving pieces of the city’s history, finally vividly presenting them before people’s eyes.
Today is the inauguration ceremony of this transformed square.
At the break of Dawn.
The day had not yet broken, but the soldiers already surrounded the square, enforcing a cordon.
For the inauguration ceremony of one square, no matter how symbolic it is, it wasn’t really necessary to make such a grand fuss. In truth, these soldiers were there not so much to enforce, but to ensure the safety of one person’s life.
In front of the bas-reliefs at the square’s center, an old man leaned on a cane, walking with hesitant steps through the sculptures, his cloudy eyes sweeping over the carvings one by one.
This was the highest ruler of Feiyan City, the councilman of Feiyan City Council, Erwin Kano, now more than seventy years old.
It was nearly seventy years ago when Lynch first arrived on these lands; seventy years, a fleeting moment in the seemingly stagnant Time of the Wizard World, only an instant for a Second Tier Transcendent like Lynch.
But for the Human World, those were indeed distinct eras, enough for a mortal to live through a full life.
The young boy once held by Greywell’s hand, the ruler who took over the scepter of power and vigorously launched a full-scale war against and annexed the Dark Moon Church, had also shed his youthful coat, becoming an old man of advanced age.
His hair was no longer thick and glossy but had turned completely gray; his spine not as straight and tall as a pine but bent over; the once firm muscles and skin now sagging and slack, unable to stride confidently, needing a cane to walk…
The only unchanging part was his eyes, as dazzling and bright as in his youth, shining like stars.
At this moment, as he walked step by step past the stone carvings, beside him, Lynch with silver hair accompanied him.
Though with Fran’s help, his identity was cleared, for so many years, the name Saphiro was deeply ingrained in this land, as was the emblematic cold, ice-blue face embedded in people’s hearts. No need to change it now.
Erwin looked at these stone carvings, gratefully saying to Lynch, “Thank you, Master, for taking the time to attend this inauguration ceremony.”
For Lynch, these sixty or seventy years were merely a brief scale of Time, but for Feiyan City and Erwin, it was a weighty history, holding significant commemorative value.
Lynch shrugged, “It’s nothing, such a little time is meaningless to me.”
Erwin looked at Lynch, enviously saying, “It truly is enviable to be a Transcendent like you. Look at you, the first time I saw you was exactly like this, by the campfire in that midsummer, you just led us to overcome the Beast Tide.”
“So many years have passed, yet you remain unchanged, while I…”
Erwin said with a hint of bitterness, “I can’t even straighten my back now.”
Lynch raised his eyebrow, “If you want to be younger, I told you, I can help you regain it.”
Erwin shook his head, “No, no matter how young the appearance, there will always be the day of aging; to make one’s shell look better, wasting a lot of Time is not worth it. To me, Time is extremely precious.”
Erwin’s original Life Force wasn’t long, by his original lifespan he would have already passed by now.
Being able to live till now was mainly due to Lynch using Magic to perform the Extraordinary Transformation, artificially giving him more Time.
However, this increase was limited, Lynch’s Magic could only maintain his current Life Force, and if he wanted to revert to his youth, it would require consuming a part of his Life Force.
Simply put, if he returned to his youthful appearance, he might die faster.
Erwin said, “Back then, the teacher was probably about my age now, feeling the same as I do now, always regretting the brevity of life, having many ambitions unfulfilled, eager to see what Feiyan City would become, wanting to do more…”
“And I…”
Erwin earnestly said, “I now feel the same as the teacher did at the time.”
Lynch watched the solemn elder before him, feeling inexplicably moved, recalling himself as a mortal once.
Back then, occasionally thinking of topics of life and death, thinking of the day he’d grow old, wondering about regrets and such.
According to the original trajectory of Life, he would, like Erwin and other ordinary humans, undergo the same life journey, slowly aging day by day until life reached its end.
Thinking about it, that was more than a hundred years ago.
Time…
Sure passes swiftly…
Lynch’s gaze swept over Erwin’s head, comforting him, “Don’t worry, you’ll live a long time.”
At present, Feiyan City’s development had reached a relatively stable stage, and all of this owed greatly to Erwin standing before him. In some sense, he was even more important than the former councilman Greywell.
Therefore, Lynch was generous with materials for him, ensuring as long as nothing unexpected occurred, he indeed could live for a considerable length of Time.
The sun rose at this moment, rays of the Dawn broke through the heavy clouds, shining down on Erwin’s face.
The old man smiled, “Thank you, Master Wizard.”
“Thank you for giving me more Time, allowing me to stay longer in this world, to see clearly the state of the world afterwards.”
“This truly… means a very great thanks to you.”
