Chapter 57: Second Core
Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Second Core
We pushed toward the convergence point’s true center over the following day, Halric’s careful tactical planning managing our advance through the worst of the corrupted creature clusters with minimal, if not entirely absent, casualties. The sickly green light grew steadily brighter and more oppressive as we advanced, until finally, breaking through a final stretch of twisted, corrupted forest, we found ourselves facing the anomaly’s actual, undeniable source.
The core itself dwarfed Shadowfang’s own dying remnant by a considerable margin — easily three times the size, its jagged, crystalline structure pulsing with the same violet-black coloration but shot through with considerably more extensive, angrier veins of sickly green corruption, arrhythmic pulses of unstable energy visibly rippling outward across the surrounding, blighted clearing.
"That’s not merely damaged," Alphina said, studying the core with genuine, alarmed focus. "That’s being actively corrupted, deliberately, in a manner considerably beyond simple natural instability."
I let Absolute Appraisal sweep across the massive structure, the notification arriving with considerable, unwelcome detail.
[Appraising: Corrupted Dungeon Core — Critical Instability]
A dungeon core suffering deliberate, sustained corruption from an external decay-aligned energy source. Natural regulatory function severely compromised. Estimated time to catastrophic destabilization: unknown, though current trajectory suggests considerable urgency. Extraction or purification recommended; forced destruction likely to trigger a considerable, uncontrolled energy release.
"We can’t simply destroy it," I relayed to the assembled expedition. "Doing so risks a considerable, uncontrolled release across the entire surrounding region."
"Can it be extracted, the way you handled Shadowfang’s core?" Halric asked.
I studied the massive, corrupted structure a long moment, weighing the same careful, gradual stabilization technique that had worked at Shadowfang against a threat considerably larger and more actively, deliberately corrupted than anything that earlier success had prepared me for.
"I don’t know," I admitted honestly. "Shadowfang’s core was dying naturally, unstable from age and neglect rather than deliberate, ongoing corruption. This is actively being fed something considerably darker. Stabilizing it might require considerably more than the technique I used before."
Lireth stepped forward, studying the corrupted core with her own considerable, newfound focus. "I sense the same decay-oriented signature I recognized from the ritual site," she said. "If Yggdrasil’s blessing genuinely represents an opposing force to exactly this kind of corruption, perhaps combining my capability with your own extraction technique might succeed where either alone would fail."
The suggestion carried genuine logic, though considerable risk alongside it. "If we’re wrong," I said, "we could trigger the exact catastrophic release Appraisal just warned against, considerably faster than simply leaving the core alone might."
"And if we do nothing," Lireth countered, "this corruption continues spreading, feeding on whatever remains of Tear’s ritual infrastructure or finding some other source entirely, until it grows into something considerably beyond even today’s danger."
Jones’s field investigator, Corvin, weighed in with careful, measured caution. "I’d recommend attempting the combined approach, but with proper contingency. If the stabilization attempt shows signs of failing catastrophically, we retreat immediately and report back for a considerably more resourced, careful second attempt."
I nodded, accepting the plan’s careful balance of ambition and caution both, and turned back toward the massive, pulsing core, Lireth stepping close beside me, her golden-flecked, forest-green hair catching the core’s sickly light in an unsettling, beautiful contrast.
"Together, then," I said.
"Together," she agreed, and we approached the corrupted core’s dais as one, the assembled expedition holding careful, tense position behind us.
I fed a careful thread of Qi toward the core exactly as I had at Shadowfang, gentle rather than forceful, seeking the same natural rhythm beneath the instability’s surface chaos. This time, though, the core’s pulse fought back against my careful guidance with a violent, corrupted resistance that Shadowfang’s simpler, natural instability had never produced.
"It’s rejecting the stabilization," I said through gritted teeth, sweat beading despite the clearing’s cool air. "The corruption’s actively resisting."
Lireth stepped forward immediately, placing her own hand near the core’s jagged surface, and I felt, through Sharp Soul Perception’s careful awareness, a wave of golden, life-affirming energy flow from her outward, meeting the corruption’s angry resistance with something considerably more fundamental than simple opposing force.
The core’s violent rejection stuttered, faltered, and I pressed my own careful Qi thread forward again into the momentary opening her blessing had created, guiding the corrupted energy’s chaotic pulse toward something closer to natural rhythm even as the corruption itself continued fighting against every careful adjustment.
[Purification Progress: 15%]
[Warning: Sustained effort required. Backlash risk increasing with corruption’s active resistance.]
"Keep going," Alphina called from behind us, her own magical support working to shield our combined effort from the corrupted creatures now gathering restlessly at the clearing’s edge, apparently sensing the disturbance to whatever twisted equilibrium had sustained them. "Whatever you’re doing, it’s working, even if slowly!"
I pushed harder, Lireth’s golden energy weaving alongside my own careful Qi guidance in a rhythm we found gradually, painfully synchronizing the longer we sustained the effort. The core’s violent pulse slowly, incrementally steadied, sickly green corruption visibly receding in patches even as it fought back with renewed intensity in others.
[Purification Progress: 40%]
Sweat streamed freely down my face now, the sustained effort costing considerably more than Shadowfang’s simpler stabilization ever had, and I felt Lireth’s own breathing grow labored beside me, her draconic resilience clearly straining against the corruption’s persistent, angry resistance.
"It’s fighting harder the deeper we push," she gasped. "Whatever’s feeding this corruption, it’s not passive. Something’s actively opposing our effort."
I extended Absolute Appraisal briefly, risking the divided attention despite the core’s continued violent resistance, and the notification that returned settled with cold, unwelcome clarity.
[Appraising: Corruption Source — Partial Read]
[Residual Draconic Signature Detected. Consistent with prolonged, deliberate exposure to Primordial-tier decay energy.]
"It’s Nyxaroth," I said, the realization settling with considerable, unwelcome weight. "Or at least, something carrying his signature. This isn’t merely ambient corruption. Something deliberately connected to the same primordial dragon that cursed you is actively feeding this core."
Lireth’s expression hardened despite her visible exhaustion. "Then we finish this properly," she said, "and send whatever remains of his influence here back into whatever shadow it’s been operating from."
We pushed together with renewed, focused determination, the purification’s progress climbing steadily now despite the corruption’s continued, angry resistance.
[Purification Progress: 75%]
[Purification Progress: 90%]
The final push demanded everything both of us had left, Lireth’s golden light flaring brilliant against the core’s last, desperate surge of corrupted resistance, my own Qi guiding the core’s massive, chaotic pulse into something finally, genuinely stable.
[Purification Complete.]
[Core Stabilized. Corruption Purged.]
[Quest Reward: 500,000 System Points.]
[Bonus Reward: Purified Dungeon Core (Item) acquired.]
[Bonus Reward: Yggdrasil’s Favor — Lireth Vaelanor’s blessing significantly strengthened by successful purification.]
The massive core’s violent, sickly pulse finally, fully settled into a steady, gentle rhythm, its coloration shifting from angry, corrupted green back into something closer to the natural violet-black I remembered from Shadowfang’s own successfully stabilized remnant.
I collapsed backward, exhausted beyond anything even Shadowfang’s own considerable effort had demanded, and felt Lireth’s hand catch my shoulder, steadying us both as the clearing’s oppressive atmosphere finally, genuinely lifted.
"We did it," she breathed, disbelieving relief evident in her exhausted voice.
"We did," I agreed, and allowed myself, for the first time since this entire forest expedition began, a genuine, unguarded moment of relief.
