Chapter 479: Chapter 422: Resisting Fear and the Way Home
The domain of shadows expanded at an extremely rapid pace.
The members of the Cultist Legion watched helplessly as they were swallowed by the darkness, their vision severely obstructed.
Guan Tong was currently held high in the air by a hand formed from shadows. He wore an Eye Shield, and with his Silver Hunter aimed down and forward, he continuously pulled the trigger.
He didn’t just fire area-of-effect, high-lethality ammunition like the No. 3 grenades and No. 6 missiles. Instead, he first fired No. 4 Smoke Bombs and No. 5 Electromagnetic Pulse Bombs.
The Smoke Bombs would obstruct their vision even further, ensuring that any attempt by the enemy to use vehicle headlights or lighting tools to see inside the Shadow Realm would be in vain.
The Electromagnetic Pulse Bombs were meant to disable the vehicles, preventing the enemy from recklessly crashing their way out of the Shadow Realm from multiple directions.
The Shadow Realm’s range was limited, after all. Every expansion consumed a great deal of additional Psychic Power. Guan Tong’s current Psychic Power reserves were naturally vast compared to other individual Ascenders, but compared to his own peak and the high consumption required by his various abilities, he didn’t have much left. In this situation, every little bit he could save counted.
After he fired off the large number of Smoke Bombs and Electromagnetic Pulse Bombs he had accumulated, the Cultist Legion within the Shadow Realm once again fell into chaos.
Some tried to turn on their vehicle headlights to illuminate their surroundings, but found that even their fog lights couldn’t penetrate the dense fog that permeated the area. Furthermore, as flashes of blue electricity sparked in the air, they discovered that their vehicles’ internal equipment was constantly sparking. The engines stalled, the power cut out, and they couldn’t be restarted.
"The fog is so thick! I can’t see anything!"
"Why are the car’s circuits fried?"
"It’s an EMP!"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
After the smoke and electromagnetic pulses, the No. 3 grenades and No. 6 missiles followed close behind.
They rained down from the sky like heavenly fire, violently devastating the Cultist Legion trapped in the dark fog.
Amidst the screams, the Cultist Legion wanted to counterattack, but they couldn’t find the target’s position.
The previous Snow White Traceless mecha and the Shadow Creatures, as powerful as they were, were ultimately attackable targets. Everyone just needed to hurl their ranged attack items at them all at once; even if they couldn’t be destroyed, they could at least cause a drain on Psychic Power.
This tactic had indeed been effective. The reason Guan Tong, Bai Xuewu, and even Chen Na’s Psychic Power had depleted so quickly was because when facing thousands of enemies, even if each person threw just one low-level attack item, the cumulative drain from defending against them all was staggering.
Now, however, inside the dark Shadow Realm, compounded by the heavy fog and electromagnetic interference, they had no idea where Guan Tong was. Their targeted attack items couldn’t lock on, and throwing non-targeted items blindly wouldn’t hit the enemy, instead frequently causing friendly fire.
For a moment, everyone was thrown into disarray, getting killed or injured in the explosions.
What was worse, the Electromagnetic Pulse Bombs had temporarily jammed all communication devices in the area. The people inside the Shadow Realm couldn’t contact the outside, and those outside, seeing a massive "black sphere" blocking the highway ahead, hesitated to act rashly.
Thus, Guan Tong bought himself nearly a minute of precious time. But soon, the commanders in the Cultist Legion reacted and began giving orders. The vehicle convoys that hadn’t been caught in the Shadow Realm were to abandon rescuing those inside and quickly proceed on foot to circle around and attack the previously discovered fortified position.
The Cultist members in the rear ranks sprang into action, abandoning their vehicles and running toward the fortified position on foot.
Guan Tong saw what was happening, but he had no strength left to stop them.
If he expanded the Shadow Realm any further, it would completely drain all his Psychic Power, and he would lose even his final option of retreating with his people.
But he knew his teammates could fight.
"These are Cultists, not Parasites! Leave them to me!"
Silver Fox noticed that the crowd running over on foot wasn’t carrying any pictures related to "Crimson Terra" and knew that these people from the rear ranks were members of the Fire Worship Cult. Cultists were different from Parasites; they also feared Crimson Fear, so they wouldn’t dare carry such pictures.
In other words, this Cultist Legion’s front ranks were composed of Parasites disguised as Cultists, while the rear ranks were the actual Cultists.
With a flash, Silver Fox shot out, charging straight toward the group of black-robed Cultists running at her.
The Cultists saw the enemy appear and immediately surrounded her, but Silver Fox was too fast, weaving through them like a phantom. She could take a life in the blink of an eye, yet it was difficult for her enemies to even touch the hem of her clothes!
"Don’t just surround her!" a Priest ordered, pointing at the fortified position. "There must be more people inside! A portion of you, go over there!"
Immediately, dozens of Cultists gave up on surrounding Silver Fox and ran toward the fortified position instead.
Seeing this, Silver Fox immediately said into her earpiece, "Yang Ran, you’re up!"
"I’ve been waiting for this!"
Yang Ran leaped out from the fortified position, raised his hands high, and shouted at the dozens of approaching Cultists, "Watch your grandpa, the Fire God, roast you into shish kebabs! Star Flame Fall!"
A few seconds later, numerous fireballs coalesced in the air and fell, burning many of the Cultists to death.
Some of the Cultists who dodged the attack counterattacked with abilities or items, while others drew their guns and fired. Yang Ran felt a surge of panic; though he had defensive items, he was a bit too slow in using them and was hit in the chest by several large-caliber bullets.
’I’m done for!’
That was his first reaction when the bullets hit him.
He was both terrified and found the idea of being killed by a gun ridiculously embarrassing.
But the next moment, he was surprised to find he was still standing. Looking down, he saw that although his Combat Suit had a large hole in it, his body didn’t seem to be seriously injured, just a little sore.
