A '70s Flash Marriage: Raising Cubs, Making Millions
Chapter 128: Mission Assignment
Chapter 128: Chapter 128: Mission Assignment
She got the reminder, and Fu Xiaoxiao smiled as she put the letter away. Liu Mei was Liu Fang’s niece, and when Fu Xiaoxiao thought of Liu Fang, she remembered that day she went to the neighborhood office to move her household registration out. After hearing what had happened to her, Liu Fang had personally come out to handle it for her.
Although she hadn’t said much the whole time, Fu Xiaoxiao had originally thought she would be made things difficult, because for a lot of the paperwork, someone from the Fu Family had to be present. She had to ask Mr. Fu to come before she could transfer out her household registration. At the time things hadn’t blown up yet, so going back, she would definitely have had to beg.
She thought getting married could help her avoid being sent down to the countryside, but in fact that was Mr. Fu deliberately misleading her, and Fu Xiaocui also deliberately didn’t tell her the truth.
She stupidly believed it, thought that once she got married she really wouldn’t have to go down to the countryside.
It was Liu Fang who told her that even if she just grabbed some random man to marry, there was no way she could avoid being sent down. People had used that trick long ago, and the higher-ups had immediately issued corresponding policies. Unless you belonged to a special group, you had to respond to the national call.
After hearing all that back then, she’d actually already felt a bit discouraged, but the arrow was already nocked and had to be shot, so she still followed her original plan and went on the blind date.
Meeting Lu Feng was something she hadn’t expected, and precisely because of that, she felt Lu Feng was her salvation, pulling her out of the fire and water.
Thinking of the Fu Family, a cold gleam flashed in Fu Xiaoxiao’s eyes. They’d treated the original Fu Xiaoxiao like a servant for so many years, bullied her for so many years, and still weren’t satisfied.
Now that they knew she was married, they still wanted to put her down? Looked like they really did treat her like a little bell-cat that they could ring at will, with not an ounce of temper.
Using the original Fu Xiaoxiao’s memories, Fu Xiaoxiao went back to the room, spread out a sheet of letter paper, and directly started writing.
In the kitchen on the other side, Lu Feng was listening to Wang Lu’s report. Wang Lu was relaying Liu Hongjun’s new orders.
"Lu Tuan, this mission is extremely important. We followed the vines and traced out several of the human traffickers’ dens, but they’re very alert and we can’t get close. The leadership wants you personally to step up and accept this mission. You must wipe out all the criminals in one go—there cannot be a single fish slipping through the net." Wang Lu looked at Lu Feng, whose face stayed expressionless as he processed the rabbit, and nervously swallowed.
Lu Feng had already turned down several missions, and the higher-ups were already unhappy with him. When he’d just come out, he’d heard the leaders cursing him out.
"Lu Tuan, you’ve already rested for a long time. How about... you take this one?" Wang Lu asked carefully.
Lu Feng gave him a faint glance. He knew he had to take it, it was just...
Fu Xiaoxiao walked into the kitchen, just in time to hear Wang Lu’s persuasion. Seeing how torn Lu Feng looked, she spoke up. "Go. The country needs you. We’ll be at home waiting for you."
"Xiao Xiao." Lu Feng saw Fu Xiaoxiao and met her gaze.
"We’ve still got a long life ahead of us. These days I know you’ve turned down several missions because of me. Every time Wang Lu leaves he looks so dejected—he must’ve gotten yelled at a lot over this, huh?" Fu Xiaoxiao chuckled softly and slowly walked over to Lu Feng.
"Sorry, I clearly promised you..." Lu Feng wanted to apologize for not being able to keep his word, but Fu Xiaoxiao shook her head.
"You haven’t done anything wrong to me, there’s no need to apologize. If you still don’t go, Uncle Liu will have to come invite you himself." Fu Xiaoxiao smiled as she spoke to Lu Feng.
Standing at the side listening to Fu Xiaoxiao talk him around, Wang Lu was incredibly moved.
Still takes Sister-in-law to get it done.
He was getting scolded from both sides, and only Fu Xiaoxiao understood how hard it was for a mere messenger like him. Every sentence had to be filtered, deleting heaps of useless words, just to catch the most important parts.
Heaven knew how hard he had it...
With just two sentences from Fu Xiaoxiao, Lu Tuan actually nodded obediently and agreed to go.
Next time he wouldn’t take the job at all; he’d just let Sister-in-law handle it directly.
"When do we depart?" Lu Feng looked over at Wang Lu.
"In three days." Wang Lu answered at once, afraid Lu Feng would regret it.
This mission wasn’t absolutely impossible without Lu Feng, but he was the most experienced among them. Every time Lu Feng led a team, he strategized behind the scenes, using the smallest possible loss to wipe out the enemy in one stroke, always keeping casualties to a minimum. That was also why the higher-ups were so insistent about having Lu Feng in command.
"It’s almost meal time. Stay and eat with us." Fu Xiaoxiao glanced at the time—since it was already close to dinner, she simply had Wang Lu stay to eat.
"Sister-in-law, anything you need help with?" Wang Lu hurried to stick by Fu Xiaoxiao’s side, checking if there was anything he could help with.
Just as he finished speaking, he suddenly felt a terrifying chill at his back. Wang Lu wasn’t unfamiliar with that feeling; he immediately backed up two steps, yielding his spot to the source of the cold—Lu Feng.
"Sister-in-law, I think it’s better to leave this to Brother-in-law. I’ll shamelessly go wait outside for the food." Without another word, Wang Lu bolted out of the kitchen.
"You’re scaring people again." Fu Xiaoxiao looked back at Lu Feng, amused.
"What would he know? I’m the one familiar with this stuff. I even know how many pieces you want this veggie cut into." Lu Feng grinned at Fu Xiaoxiao, sticking close to her and fawning.
Wang Lu wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and let out a breath.
"Wang Lu, what’s wrong? Who bullied you?" Lu Chen was playing hopscotch. Seeing Wang Lu like that, he asked curiously.
"Who else could it be—your dad." Wang Lu answered Lu Chen with a pitiful look.
Thinking Lu Chen would help him, he instead got a glance and a mild comment. "Wang Lu, my dad’s always been this fierce. It’s been so long—how are you still not used to it?"
Wang Lu choked. "But he’s clearly not like that in front of your mom."
Lu Chen giggled. "You’re not my mom. My brother and I used to be scared of Dad—he’s always been this intimidating, it’s not like you don’t know."
"It’s only after Mom came that Dad changed." Lu Chen looked at Wang Lu.
Wang Lu gave Lu Chen a surprised look, and thinking it over, it really did seem that way.
After Fu Xiaoxiao came, it was only then that Lu Feng’s face started to show a rare smile. Before, no matter what he said, Lu Feng would only respond briefly.
This time, Lu Feng had refused missions for such a long stretch because of Fu Xiaoxiao. Other than getting angry and scolding him a bit, the higher-ups never really punished him. Every time Wang Lu sat in the office listening to the leaders roaring, he’d think Lu Feng was dead meat.
But it was always thunder with little rain, and in the end they just let it slide.
Before, Lu Feng had been like a lifeless tool—no matter how many missions came, he never refused. In daily life he never complained and never asked for anything, so unnaturally calm he barely seemed human.
To be honest, Wang Lu used to be pretty scared of him.
Now, he felt like Lu Feng had become more human. Still just as scary, but... different.
"Looks like I need to find a wife too... Having someone care about you really is different." Wang Lu scratched his hair.
Lu Chen was taken aback for a moment. "Doesn’t Sister Lin Xue like you? How come you haven’t married her yet? Don’t tell me... you’re that useless?"
"...You’re just a kid—what do you know?" The moment Wang Lu heard Lin Xue’s name, his whole body went taut.
