A Bumpy Road to Power
Chapter 1125 - 1125
Under the strong pressure from the Municipal Committee.
Three days later.
The Riverwood District Committee made a decision.
To sell the plot where the former District Committee courtyard is located in the district center. The proceeds will compensate Grandview Realty for the subsequent construction of Verdant Court. Another portion will repay the overdue subsidies for the villagers of Southgate Village.
The whole matter has been going around for three to four years.
If it weren't for Dirk Carter's words.
Perhaps the villagers of Southgate Village may never see the day their new homes are completed until their death.
Three days later in the afternoon.
The cemetery of Riverwood District.
Sia was kneeling on the ground, and in front of her was a tombstone.
This cemetery is the burial place of her father, Regis Sykes, the last village chief of Southgate Village.
"Dad, I completed the mission you entrusted me with..."
After saying this sentence.
Sia's tears could no longer be stopped, and they flowed down incessantly.
At this moment.
A tissue suddenly appeared in front of her.
Sia was startled.
She turned her head to see, and somehow Dirk Carter had appeared beside her.
"You... How come you're here?"
Sia was a bit flustered, hurriedly stood up, wiped her tears, and asked.
Dirk Carter reached out and wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes with a tissue, saying, "Chief Sykes was truly a good cadre, I also had to come and see him."
After speaking.
He placed a bouquet of fresh flowers in front of the tombstone.
"My father felt guilty about everyone until his dying moments, I think he can finally rest in peace now. All of this, thanks to you."
Sia said.
Dirk Carter smiled gently.
Said, "No, you should thank yourself. It was your persistence that saved the villagers of Southgate Village, while I merely did what I was supposed to do."
"You are a good person."
Sia took a deep breath and said.
Upon hearing these words, Dirk Carter chuckled and said, "To hear such an evaluation from you, it's my good fortune in three lifetimes."
"I'm serious, not just flattering you."
Sia mumbled.
Dirk Carter sighed.
Said, "This matter should be enough to prompt reflection among us officials. Why couldn't such a matter be solved over three to four years? Why do so many people know about such issues yet choose not to address them? Why is the communication between the public and leadership so difficult, what exactly is power?"
"Society is progressing, and your appearance is progress. I believe it will get better and better in the future."
Sia said, looking at the azure sky in the distance.
At that moment.
Dirk Carter was somewhat moved.
Despite suffering so much grievance.
Sia was still full of hope for the future.
A girl like this is truly rare.
"Look, this is for you."
Dirk Carter suddenly thought of something and handed an envelope to Sia.
"What is this?"
Sia asked.
"The admission notice from Novaria University of Political Science and Law."
Dirk Carter replied.
Sia's expression instantly became dazed.
"I checked it, and indeed, you are a student of this political science school; your student record still exists. I couldn't quite believe it before, but I asked someone for help to arrange it. You can return to study, though you would have to start again from freshman year."
Dirk Carter said.
Sia's body began to tremble slightly.
Tears started to accumulate in her eyes bit by bit.
Dirk Carter immediately said, "Don't cry, and there's no need to thank me. This is rightfully yours. Although it's a bit delayed, it ultimately hasn't let you down. Go study well at the political science school, and whether you enter the political system or become a lawyer afterward, I believe you'll be a defender of the law."
"Yes! I will definitely achieve it."
Sia didn't let the tears fall down.
But rather bit her teeth and heavily nodded her head.
After the memorial was finished.
The two were just about to go down the hill.
At this moment, Dirk Carter from a distance saw the cemetery gate.
There were a dozen young men heading towards them.
These dozen people seemed from their appearance to be disreputable.
Some had dyed yellow hair.
Some wore vests showing tattoos.
Each held either steel pipes or machetes, and among them, one even held a homemade shotgun.
It's important to know.
The vast cemetery now only had the two of them.
These people suddenly appeared.
Undoubtedly, their target was clearly them.
The cemetery was arranged down the slope of the hill.
Dirk Carter and Sia were halfway up the hill.
But these dozen people were climbing the hill.
Even more concerning was that they seemed to have planned it; upon reaching the cemetery, they spread out, with all three paths down blocked by their people, meaning Dirk Carter and Sia wanted to escape. The path down was blocked.
Their intentions were not good.
Dirk Carter and Sia exchanged a glance.
Sia, rather astutely, said, "Let's go up. I know a small path to leave."
Without saying more.
The two rushed upward towards the hilltop.
The people behind saw they had the intention to flee and immediately sped up their pace.
A few minutes later.
Under Sia's guidance.
The two reached the highest point of the cemetery.
Between the cemetery and the forest, there was an iron fence.
Sure enough.
Sia found a door in the corner.
The door was unlocked.
After they pushed the door open, there was a dense forest.
"Why is it that every time we're fleeing, we escape into the forest?"
Dirk Carter muttered.
Sia was surprised and asked, "Do you often have to flee?"
Dirk Carter chuckled and said, "Not often, but such a scene I have indeed experienced a few times before."
They chatted as they walked.
Their steps did not slow.
Even though they were running quickly, the group behind was in relentless pursuit.
After running breathless for a while, Sia, being a woman, was visibly struggling, but the tail behind them wasn't shaken off. At this rate, they would eventually get caught.
At that moment.
He suddenly stumbled.
If not for his quick reflexes to grab onto a nearby small tree.
He might have fallen into a deep pit.
Upon closer inspection.
The spot he just stepped on was a trap.
Covered with leaves, likely set by hunters for catching wild boars.
His mind raced as he crouched down, uncovering the leaves, and sure enough found a lid made of vines.
He opened the lid and said to Sia, "Come on, let's hide here."
Sia was practically at her limit.
Nodded.
Under Dirk Carter's assistance, she first descended into the deep pit.
Dirk Carter then covered the vine lid with some leaves and erased their footprints with a branch.
Then, he jumped into the deep pit himself, carefully holding the vine lid, and covered the trap once more.
Approximately two minutes later.
The sounds of clustered footsteps appeared overhead.
The trap wasn't small.
Large enough for a wild boar.
Nonetheless, in this enclosed space, Sia was still tightly pressed against Dirk Carter.
In times of crisis, a man remains a woman's support.
