Of course, Clara Grant wanted her mother and Marcus Jarvis to be together, but she was also terrified. If they did start a relationship, what if Marcus later found out about what her mother had been through and decided to leave her? ’Wouldn’t Mom just get hurt all over again?’

"Your mother told me."

"My mom?" Clara could hardly believe it. She knew that incident was a source of lifelong pain and shame for her mother—one she wouldn’t even have told Clara about if she hadn’t been forced to.

"Yes." Marcus Jarvis nodded. "Clara, I don’t believe your mother should be looked down on for going through something like that. It wasn’t her fault; she was the victim. No matter what she’s experienced, in my eyes, she is a pure and wonderful woman. So, what you’re worried about will never happen."

A smile broke out across Clara’s previously solemn face. "Uncle Jarvis, thank you. Even though my mom hasn’t accepted your feelings yet, I’m sure your sincerity will eventually win her over. Besides, the fact that she could tell you about that incident means you’re already very important to her."

"Really? That’s wonderful," Marcus Jarvis said with a smile.

Clara nodded, glanced at her mother’s bedroom door, then gave Marcus Jarvis a playful wink. "And besides, you’ve got me, right? I’ll be sure to put in a good word for you with my mom."

At that, they both let out a soft chuckle.

Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Skylar Hayes stood behind the slightly ajar door. Listening to their laughter from the living room, she felt a swirl of complex emotions, but a faint smile still touched her lips.
