Before he could finish, Skylar Hayes cut in, "Excuse me, I’m going to the restroom," then turned and hurried off in the other direction.

Marcus Jarvis looked at Clara Grant in confusion, asking with concern, "Clara, what’s wrong with your mother?"

"What could possibly be wrong with her? She probably just can’t stand to see other people happy," Jean Jarvis said snidely, shooting a contemptuous glance at Skylar Hayes’s retreating back.

Marcus Jarvis frowned slightly and gave Jean Jarvis a look, but he didn’t say anything.

"Oh, Uncle Jarvis, I’m going to check on my mom." Clara Grant didn’t have time to bicker with Jean Jarvis and quickly rushed after Skylar Hayes.

Marcus Jarvis didn’t have a chance to say anything to her. He just stared at her retreating back for a long while, seemingly lost in thought.

Seth Quinn glanced at him, but just as he was about to speak, the phone in his pocket rang. He had to step aside to answer it.

Cedric Grant glanced at Marcus Jarvis. He saw the worry on the man’s face. ’Is he worried about Skylar Hayes? It seems the relationship between Marcus and Skylar isn’t as simple as just being friends.’

For some reason, whenever Cedric Grant considered the possibility of another kind of relationship between Marcus Jarvis and Skylar Hayes, he felt a surge of irritation.

He discreetly tugged on Jean Jarvis’s arm and complained in a low voice, "Whose idea was it for us to have dinner together? What’s there to eat? Didn’t you stop to think if it was even appropriate for this group of people to be eating together?"

Jean Jarvis shook his hand off, glaring at him as she retorted sarcastically, "Haven’t you always wanted to patch things up with that mother-daughter pair? I’m giving you the chance, and now you’re not happy about it?"

With that, she ignored him and walked over to Marcus Jarvis. Seeing that he was still staring in the direction Skylar Hayes had gone, she called out, "Cousin," snapping him out of his trance.

Marcus Jarvis turned to look at her. Jean Jarvis pulled him aside, putting some distance between them and Cedric Grant, before speaking again. "Cousin, how did you get mixed up with them?"

Marcus Jarvis frowned, taking a moment to realize that by "them," she meant Skylar Hayes and Clara Grant.

"Why? Is there a problem? Weren’t you the one who said you and Skylar have been good friends for decades? The way you say that, it sounds like you have something against her."

"Friends? That was a long time ago. We cut ties over a year ago." As she spoke, Jean Jarvis jerked her chin toward Cedric Grant. "Cedric. He used to be Skylar Hayes’s husband. Now he’s mine."

Marcus Jarvis’s gaze followed hers to Cedric Grant, and his frown deepened. "So, you’re the reason Cedric Grant divorced Skylar?"

"Is that what Skylar told you? Cousin, it wasn’t me. They divorced for another reason," Jean Jarvis denied flatly. Then she lowered her voice conspiratorially. "Cousin, I’d advise you to keep your distance from Skylar Hayes. Let me tell you, she was once... by a man... She’s not clean."

"Jean, how can you say that?" Marcus Jarvis’s expression turned stern. "Just because she was assaulted, she’s ’not clean’? It wasn’t her fault. She’s an innocent victim."

"Cousin, don’t tell me you’ve fallen for her, have you? You need to think this through. Even if she’s a victim, she’s still... tainted. What man could accept a woman like that? That’s the real reason Cedric couldn’t stand it anymore and divorced her. Cousin, you can’t bring shame upon our family!"

"Jean, you’ve gone too far," Marcus Jarvis’s tone grew much harsher. "You’re a woman yourself, and you were friends with Skylar for years. You should understand her. If you ever speak about her like that again, don’t be surprised if I no longer consider you my cousin."

"Alright, alright, fine! I won’t say another word, happy now? But we haven’t seen each other in ages. We should at least have this meal together..."
