Chapter 649: Chapter 646: The Meal Hadn’t Even Started, and She Was Already Seething
Fortunately, Cedric Grant noticed her sour expression and made an effort to soften his tone. "Alright, alright, just hurry up and order. Don’t keep everyone waiting."
Jean Jarvis could only seethe internally. She resentfully lowered the menu, forced a smile at the others, and tried to save face. "Oh, that’s just how Cedric is. He’s always worried that what he orders won’t suit my tastes, so he insists I pick my own favorites."
No one else said a word. She sullenly placed her order with the waiter and passed the menu to Cedric Grant.
After Cedric finished ordering, he gave the menu to Clara Grant and Seth Quinn. They put their heads together, conferred over the menu, and harmoniously placed their order.
The meal hadn’t even begun, but Jean Jarvis was already fuming inside.
Seth Quinn handed the menu back to the waiter and added, "And please bring out dessert at the very end. That’ll be all."
The waiter agreed and then left.
The food they ordered arrived quickly and was placed in front of each person.
Cedric Grant glanced at the foie gras in front of Skylar Hayes and spoke without thinking, "Skylar, you never used to like foie gras. You always said you didn’t like the taste."
Jean Jarvis, who had just picked up her knife and fork, couldn’t help but grit her teeth in resentment when she heard him. Her hands tightened instinctively; if she had the strength, she probably would have bent the cutlery in her grasp.
’Cedric Grant, what is wrong with him? His actual wife is sitting right here, and he’s reminiscing about his ex-wife’s old tastes and preferences!’
’What is he thinking? Fawning over Skylar Hayes and her daughter to get in with the Quinn family is one thing, but is he not even going to bother hiding it in public now?’
Skylar Hayes naturally noticed Jean Jarvis’s displeased expression. She lifted her gaze slightly, glancing at Jean’s hands where the veins were bulging, before saying nonchalantly:
"People change. That goes for tastes, preferences, personality, and temper. And it’s precisely because things are so unpredictable that my life is actually much more pleasant now than it used to be."
Marcus Jarvis nodded. "Mm, Skylar’s right. A little unpredictability actually makes life more interesting. A life that never changes is like a pool of stagnant water—utterly meaningless.
Cedric, you of all people should understand that, seeing as you’ve married, divorced, and married again. Plenty of men see divorce and remarriage as an exciting thrill."
Though his words were subtle, his meaning was perfectly clear: men who see divorce and remarriage as an exciting thrill are irresponsible, and Cedric Grant was no exception.
Clara Grant, who was looking down to cut her steak, tried to stifle a laugh. Her hand went weak, and her knife dropped onto the plate with a CLANG.
Cedric Grant shot her a look, his expression stiffening. He had, of course, caught the subtext in Marcus Jarvis’s words and couldn’t resist retorting, "You’re not exactly young yourself. I trust you’ve been married before as well?"
The implication was clear: if Marcus had been married before and was now with Skylar Hayes, didn’t that also make him one of those thrill-seeking men? What right did he have to talk?
Marcus Jarvis nodded again. "Yes, of course I was married. My wife was of Chinese descent; she passed away eight years ago. I thought I would never meet another woman who could capture my heart, but then, after I returned to the country, I met Skylar."
The moment his words landed, there were two more sounds—CLANG, CLANG—as Skylar Hayes dropped both her knife and fork onto her plate.
In truth, while Marcus Jarvis harbored feelings for Skylar Hayes, this was the first time he had ever voiced them, and he’d done so right in front of Cedric Grant and Jean Jarvis.
Skylar Hayes was, of course, completely caught off guard.
All eyes turned to her. In the next moment, two male voices, both laced with concern, spoke at the same time...
