Chapter 2123 - 512: Take Care of Yourself, So Cruel
Chapter 2123: Chapter 512: Take Care of Yourself, So Cruel
There’s an old saying that goes, "The clever are ruined by their own cleverness." She, Liang Wenwan, always prided herself on being smart, yet in the end she stumbled over the very person she had looked down on the most.
This fall was far too deep; even now she still hadn’t climbed out of it.
The scene of Zhuang Fanxing falling from the building kept replaying in her mind over and over, like some kind of curse, making her head ache.
Ask her why she didn’t cry? Would crying help?
She had turned countless possibilities over in her heart, yet in the end there was only one outcome.
No matter whether she was innocent or not, there was no more "them."
This answer was simply too cruel, the pain in her heart making it feel almost impossible to breathe.
Why? Why did heaven have to be so cruel to her?
The door was suddenly pushed open, and a series of heavy, steady footsteps sounded. Her body abruptly stiffened, and she didn’t look up.
He had finally come after all.
Was he here to demand an explanation, or to avenge his mother’s death?
The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. In that long, nearly maddening silence, every step the man took seemed to land directly on her heart.
A shadow fell over her head. She instinctively shrank her neck, yet the next moment she lifted her head with a smile.
The man stood over her, looking down from on high. His eyes were fathomless and ice-cold, no longer holding the frivolous, worldly, debauched charm of the past, only endless distance and chilliness as he simply, quietly stared at her.
Her heart instantly sank to the very bottom.
Yet the corners of her lips still curved in a gentle smile; even now, with her clothes disheveled and her appearance wretched, whatever the situation, she would not let go of the dignity that belonged to her alone.
"You’re here."
The man looked at her quietly. "Liang Wenwan, don’t you have anything to explain?"
She froze for a moment, then smiled and shook her head. "If you believe me, I don’t need to explain. If you don’t believe me, what’s the point of explaining?"
She gazed at his handsome face so close at hand, yet her heart was bleeding.
He still didn’t believe her.
Suddenly, the man seized her by the neck. It felt as if with just a slight increase in force he could snap it. His icy gaze bore down on her. They were so close she could feel his breath brush over her skin, sending a trembling shiver across it inch by inch.
"You think I really don’t dare do anything to you?"
She saw the intent to kill in his eyes.
He wanted to kill her.
This realization made her close her eyes in despair. If she could die by your hand, that too would be a kind of release.
The woman’s pale, thin face stabbed at his eyes like a needle. The gentle smile at the corner of her lips felt like a soundless mockery. He truly wanted to twist her neck right then and there...
Suddenly, the man let go. The cold pads of his fingers brushed past her cheek. She turned her face away in a wretched attempt to avoid him.
"I know this has nothing to do with you, but that doesn’t mean I’ll forgive you. Leave."
Those three words, "Leave," completely drove her out of his world.
He knew she was innocent, knew she had been framed. But so what? Zhuang Fanxing was dead after all. Between them lay Zhuang Fanxing’s death. Even if they forced themselves to stay together, this incident would always be a thorn in both their hearts, and in the end they still wouldn’t make it to a happy ending.
If the final result would still be failure, it was better to withdraw from the very beginning. Perhaps that was the best ending for the both of them.
But...
She suddenly clutched at the hem of his clothes and murmured, "Don’t go..."
Ruan Songxi turned his eyes to look at her. Her pale face seemed so innocent and pitiful that his heart gave a sudden tremor. His hands hung at his sides, clenched into tight fists.
The fleeting softness in his eyes was encased by a layer of hard ice, a frost no amount of sunlight could melt.
He pried her hand off. "Take care of yourself."
Without the slightest hesitation, he turned and strode away.
Liang Wenwan collapsed to the floor in a graceless heap, watching helplessly as he walked out of her world step by step. He never once looked back. This time, he had truly left her.
Tears finally rolled down in great, unchecked drops. Her shoulders trembled, yet she bit down hard on her lips, lifted her head, forced the tears back, and slowly stood up.
Liang Taisheng’s lawyer thought he had done a good job. The police had proven Liang Wenwan’s innocence so quickly that they released her.
"Wanwan..." Liang Taisheng looked at the young woman walking out. There was none of her former socialite grace left—only haggard desolation that made one’s heart ache.
Seeing the man with graying temples, the tears Liang Wenwan had just forced back almost surged out again. She sniffed hard and all but flung herself into his arms.
