Bai Ran had been a little hesitant, but after hearing the middle-aged woman’s words, a flash of insight crossed her mind. She frowned and scolded, "Shut your mouth. You’ve always talked nonsense, and I put up with it for the sake of how devoted you’ve been to taking care of Feifei, but you’ve really gone too far today."

The middle-aged woman hadn’t expected Bai Ran to actually yell at her; she was still a bit stunned and hadn’t reacted yet.

Bai Ran turned her head to look at Yun Ya, an apologetic look already on her face. "My nanny has no filter. Please don’t take what she says to heart. Feifei’s high fever really scared me half to death. If you can take a look at her, that would be her good fortune."

As she spoke, she reached out to take the child back into her arms. The nanny opened her mouth, wanting to say something more, but was silenced by a single glare from Bai Ran. She hunched her shoulders and fell quiet, only occasionally shooting Yun Ya a resentful look.

Yun Ya would never take an unrelated person to heart, much less care what the other party thought of her. She lifted the blanket covering the child. The little girl had cried herself out; crystal tears clung to her tender, pale cheeks, her face flushed red, her little head bobbing slightly.

Yun Ya tilted the little girl’s chin up to reveal her whole face—big, liquid eyes, a delicate nose and mouth, looking very much like Bai Ran. So young and already so pretty; who knew what she’d look like when she grew up.

The little girl first stared at Yun Ya curiously. She’d been about to purse her lips and cry out of habit, but faced with Yun Ya’s gentle gaze, she actually reached out a hand toward Yun Ya, asking to be held. Her obedient, adorable manner softened Yun Ya’s heart completely; she thought she probably couldn’t resist a child like this at all.

"Feifei, be good. Let me give you a check-up, okay? It’ll be over soon." Yun Ya pried open the child’s eyelids and examined them carefully, then lifted her collar to take a look. Bai Ran had been watching Yun Ya the whole time; seeing her frown deepening, her heart sank further and further, and she instinctively tightened her hold on her daughter.

"Yun Ya... there’s nothing serious, right? This child was a bit premature when she was born and gets sick a lot. I’m terrified something might happen to her, so I’m usually very careful with her. I never thought that I’d just step out to run an errand and come back to find her running a high fever. I got so flustered I rushed her straight to the hospital..." Bai Ran said anxiously, then shot a glare at the nanny standing off to the side. Usually she took care of Feifei herself and rarely left her to others. This time she truly had something urgent to deal with, so she had entrusted Feifei to the nanny. She’d hired this nanny through a connection, and she had indeed done a decent job these past days. But why did something happen the moment she left Feifei with her?

A seed of suspicion slowly took root in Bai Ran’s heart.

The nanny noticed Bai Ran’s gaze and, feeling guilty, looked away, her hands nervously twisting at the fabric of her pants.

Yun Ya gently touched the child’s head. The child let out a soft whimper and yawned, looking extremely listless.

Yun Ya narrowed her eyes slightly. "What has she eaten lately?"

Bai Ran turned to look at the nanny. "Answer the doctor. While I was gone, what did you give Feifei to eat?"

"N-nothing... just some formula and water... Madam, we should hurry and find a specialist. The young miss can’t afford any delay..."

"This child is usually so lively she can’t sit still at all. I never thought she’d be this obedient only when she’s sick." Bai Ran looked at her daughter, weak and curled up in her arms, heart aching.

Yun Ya glanced at the child, then at the nanny’s slightly evasive eyes, and frowned. "Aside from the formula and water, you really didn’t give her anything else?"

The nanny immediately stiffened her neck and said, "What do you mean by that? Are you saying I’d hurt the young miss? What good would that do me? Since you’re a doctor, then just focus on treating her. The way I see it, you’re the one who’s unreliable."

Yun Ya let out a cold laugh. "Why are you so nervous? Did I say you would hurt her?"
