Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Reaping What One Sows (8)

After the birthday banquet ended, Seraphina Sterling, the biggest winner of the night, didn’t leave the Stelluna Hotel. Instead, she waited for the servers to come and clean up the utter mess.

"Nadia Chapman, this is all on you now. I’m clocking out!"

"I’m leaving too, Nadia Chapman. Clean all this up before you clock out!"

"I’ve still got a dish to bring out. You take care of this!"

...

A job meant for six people instantly fell to Nadia Chapman alone.

Before long, the supervisor walked over. When she saw that only Nadia Chapman was working and that the banquet hall wasn’t even half-cleaned, she blew up.

"Nadia Chapman, do you even know how to do your job? Are you even capable of it? How long has it been, and this banquet hall still isn’t cleaned? We have other guests coming here soon! You’re so slow. If you delay their banquet, can you afford to compensate them?"

This kind of thing had happened more than once. Newcomers were always bullied, but Nadia Chapman had been picked on far more than just once or twice. Just as she was about to defend herself, the supervisor started shouting again.

"What are you looking at? Get a move on! If you have time to stare at me, you have time to clear another glass! Let me tell you, if you don’t get this place cleaned up on time today, you can forget about your bonus for this month!"

The thought of her bonus made Nadia Chapman swallow her anger. Resigning herself to her fate, she started working again, her movements much faster than before.

"Well, well, who do we have here? Isn’t it Nadia Chapman? What’s this? Have you really stooped so low as to become a waitress?" Fiona Chapman emerged from an adjacent banquet hall, just in time to see Nadia being berated by the supervisor.

"Serving people is all you’ll ever be good for in this lifetime! Just take your sweet time mopping, sweeping, scrubbing bowls, and washing plates! Hmph!" Dressed head-to-toe in designer brands, Fiona Chapman shot Nadia Chapman a cool glance and strutted past her with her nose in the air.

The one thing Nadia Chapman had dreaded most had happened—Fiona Chapman had seen her working. They were both women of the Chapman Family, yet Fiona could dress in designer brands, drive luxury cars, wear expensive jewelry, and frequent all sorts of high-class venues and parties.

Meanwhile, she, Nadia Chapman, could only survive by working odd jobs. There was nothing to be done about it; the Chapman Family’s living expenses were entirely controlled by Fiona Chapman’s mother, Nolan Patterson. How could she possibly give Nadia any allowance?

The moment Fiona Chapman saw her, the tough facade she had maintained for so long shattered in an instant. Even her last shred of pride was ruthlessly trampled underfoot by Fiona.

"What are you looking at! Get back to cleaning! She’s the great young miss of the Chapman Family. And even though your last name is also Chapman, you’re just a lowly waitress at the Stelluna Hotel! Cleaning the banquet hall is what you should be doing right now! She’s a high and mighty princess, and you’re just a little sparrow! You can be envious all you want, but it won’t get you anywhere! You should stop dreaming about a sparrow flying up a branch to become a phoenix. That’s never going to happen!"

The supervisor’s lecture was laced with sarcasm.

"You’re right, I am a little sparrow, but so what? Who says I can’t become a phoenix?" Nadia Chapman finally exploded. After holding it in for so long, the sight of Fiona Chapman made all her pent-up emotions erupt.

"How dare you speak to me like that? Do you not want this job anymore?"

"You’re damn right I don’t! I quit! I’ve had enough! Find someone else to do it, I don’t care! I’m not cleaning another thing!" With that, Nadia Chapman ripped off her name tag and threw it right at the supervisor. She turned on her heel and walked away, a commanding and impressive sight.

"Nadia Chapman—you’ll regret this! I’m telling you, even if you come back begging on your knees, I will never let you work here again!" the supervisor screamed, furious. She never imagined that the ever-silent, submissive Nadia Chapman would actually blow up like this, not even caring about her job anymore! ’What do I do now? This banquet hall is needed soon! If it’s not cleaned up... Oh god, I can’t even imagine the consequences!’

The supervisor hastily called the other servers, but they had all clocked out. Even if they rushed back, it would be too late. The supervisor could only resign herself to cleaning it alone. But with just her, no matter how fast she worked, it would be impossible to get the room clean before the next banquet started. Without Nadia Chapman as a scapegoat, the final punishment could only fall on her.

After watching the entire drama unfold, Seraphina Sterling followed Nadia Chapman out and called out to her.

"Nadia Chapman—"

"Seraphina Sterling?" She stopped.

"Thank you for the warning earlier." Yes, Nadia Chapman was the one who had warned Seraphina Sterling about the person with a knife behind her. When all the children of the great families stood silent, it was Nadia Chapman, a mere waitress, who spoke up to help her. She cared so much about that job, but in the face of danger, she still chose to help, even though doing so could very well have cost her the position.

"Even if I hadn’t warned you, you would have been fine." Nadia Chapman knew her place; it was an insight gained from years of working odd jobs.

"You have plenty of time now. I think we should find a quiet place to have a proper talk." Seraphina Sterling watched Nadia, who remained guarded. She offered a small smile, hoping to ease the complex emotions swirling within the other woman.

Nadia Chapman’s expression changed. "You saw all of that just now?"
