Chapter 470: Chapter 470: Seraphina’s Marriage is Being Discussed (2)

Seraphina Sterling’s voice was still soft, her tone as gentle as could be. However, for her to use this attitude to expose the truth about Shelby Fenton’s identity was what Shelby found most unbearable. It was more humiliating than any arrogant sneer.

Shelby Fenton was strikingly beautiful, quick-witted, and intelligent—a daughter of the Fenton Family. Though she had many faults, they were the common failings of a pampered heiress from high society, so those in her circle didn’t think much of them. The only thing that was an indelible stain on her record was her identity. Her mother was the illegitimate daughter of the Hale Family, and she, in turn, was the illegitimate daughter of the Fenton Family. Legally speaking, the Fenton Family had only one son: Leo Fenton.

High society cared about two things above all else: bloodline and legitimate birth. This meant that no matter how exceptional Shelby Fenton was, she could never overcome the deficiency of her status.

Shelby Fenton suppressed her fury. "What’s wrong with my identity? No matter what, I’m still the daughter of a prestigious family! I bet you just tagged along with Nadia Chapman to get in here. Nadia paid for those porcelain accessories last time, didn’t she? People like you can only get into high-class places like this by sucking up to others and currying favor! Today is my grandfather’s birthday celebration! I don’t care who you came with. Get the hell out of here, now! This isn’t a place for a country bumpkin like you! You aren’t worthy! You’ll just lower the standard of this entire banquet!"

"So what if you’re Mr. Hale’s granddaughter? Your last name is Fenton, not Hale. Today, your status is the same as mine—we’re both just guests here to offer birthday wishes. There’s no need to put yourself on such a high pedestal; the higher you are, the harder you’ll fall. I’ll pretend I didn’t hear what you just said. I suggest you stop humiliating yourself and ruining Mr. Hale’s birthday mood."

Seraphina Sterling maintained a graceful smile on her face—the very picture of social etiquette. Even when insulted, she kept a placid, unreadable expression. In contrast, Shelby Fenton’s class was far lower. Seraphina had only spoken a few truths, and Shelby was already trembling with rage, unable to bear it. Her voice even carried a hysterical edge. The difference between them was clear in an instant.

"Seraphina Sterling—get out! Get out right now!" Shelby Fenton trembled with rage. She had always been The Little Princess at home, coddled by her family. No one had ever dared to speak a harsh word to her. How could she possibly endure being mocked like this by Seraphina in a place like this?

Shelby Fenton’s furious shouts drew the attention of the surrounding guests. Jacinta Hale, who had been chatting with the other society ladies, immediately walked over. When she saw her precious daughter trembling with rage, her eyes landed on Seraphina Sterling. She instantly recalled the grudge from their fight over jewelry at Apex Antique Collections. She had yet to get her revenge for that day, and now this woman had provoked her darling daughter to such an extent. With new and old grievances piling up, this feud had just become serious.

"Well, well, I was wondering who it was. Turns out it’s the young lady who went to the Hale Corporation’s antique shop and couldn’t afford to pay. It’s not that we deliberately fought with you for it that day; it’s just that you went too far. With antiques, the price is set by the shop owner. It was the first time I’d ever seen someone try to buy an antique and then accuse the owner of being crooked simply because they didn’t have enough money. Hale is considered a titan in this industry, with a wealth of experience. For you to question him just because you can’t afford something is utterly ridiculous!"

Jacinta Hale’s demeanor was much more composed than Shelby Fenton’s, but her words were like daggers, each one aimed squarely at Seraphina Sterling. Those extra years of life certainly made a difference; her skill in putting people down was, one had to admit, quite something.
