CHAPTER 310

KATYA POV

I tightened my grip around Chiara’s hand until my fingers hurt. She coughed beside me, doubling over for a second before forcing herself upright again. The smoke seemed thicker now.

Every breath scraped against my throat. Every cough made my chest ache. I blinked rapidly, trying to clear the tears gathering in my stinging eyes.

Everything had become blurred. Then… “There…” The word came out between coughs. Barely louder than a whisper. I lifted a trembling hand and pointed through the haze.

Chiara followed the direction of my finger.

“What?”

“There…” I coughed again, my lungs protesting violently.

“I think… there’s… a door.” At first, all I could see was another section of smoke until my vision adjusted.

A dark outline emerged from the wall. Half hidden behind a decorative pillar. It looked Forgotten. Almost abandoned.

No one seemed to run towards that door and most importantly… It was open.

Not wide. Just enough. A narrow strip of darkness waited beyond it. Chiara squinted through the smoke.

“I… I see it.”

Hope.

The feeling arrived so suddenly it almost hurt. Maybe it wasn’t the main exit. Maybe it led somewhere else.

A service corridor. A storage room. Anything. Anywhere. Anywhere was better than standing in smoke while hundreds of terrified people crushed one another toward the front doors.

“Come on.” I pulled gently on Chiara’s hand.

She didn’t argue. Together we pushed forward. Every step felt slower than the last. People stumbled past us without looking.

Someone brushed hard against my shoulder, nearly knocking me sideways before disappearing back into the gray haze.

Another person ran by, coughing violently. Nobody stopped. Nobody looked at anyone else. Everyone was trying to survive. The abandoned-looking door grew closer.

Only a few more steps. Another violent coughing fit bent me forward.

I forced myself to keep moving.

Just a little farther. One more step. My foot caught on something. Hard. The impact threw me off balance. A startled gasp escaped me as I lurched forward. Chiara grabbed my arm before I could fall completely.

“Katya!”

“I’m…” I looked down automatically.

Annoyed. Ready to curse whatever had been lying in the middle of the floor.

The words never came. Someone was lying there.

At first my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.

A man. Flat on his back.

One arm twisted beneath him at an unnatural angle. His clothes were dark enough that I couldn’t immediately tell where they ended…

…and where the stains began. His face was turned toward me.

One eye stared directly upward. Wide open. Unblinking. Looking straight at me. My breathing stopped. Everything else disappeared.

He wasn’t unconscious. He wasn’t injured. He wasn’t waiting for someone to help him. He wasn’t moving.

At all. His empty stare never blinked. Cold rushed through my entire body. My fingers went numb around Chiara’s hand.

My mouth opened. Nothing came out. The world tilted. Every muscle in my body locked so completely I couldn’t even step backward. It felt as though my heart had forgotten how to beat.

“Katya?”

Chiara’s voice sounded impossibly far away.

Someone was dead. Right here.

At my feet.

“Katya!” A sharp shake finally tore my gaze away. I looked at Chiara. She had gone pale.

Even through the alcohol. Her own eyes flicked toward the body for barely a second before she looked away again, swallowing hard.

“We have to go.” Another wave of people surged through the smoke behind us. Someone crashed into my shoulder. Another person stumbled over the same body before scrambling back to their feet without even looking down.

Nobody stopped. Chiara tightened her grip around my wrist. My lungs finally remembered how to work. I sucked in a shaky breath.

Instantly regretted it. Smoke burned down my throat, triggering another violent coughing fit that bent me nearly double. Chiara coughed with me. Together we staggered forward again.

The abandoned-looking door was only a few metres away now. Close. So close. Hope returned in tiny, fragile pieces. The outline of the doorway grew clearer through the haze.

Almost there. I reached toward it.

“Katya!” The voice echoed through the smoke.

Deep. Male. Familiar. My entire body froze. Chiara didn’t let me freeze. She didn’t give me the chance to turn around, to seek out the source of that deep, commanding voice that cut through the haze of my panic.

Her fingers, slick with sweat and trembling with an adrenaline-fueled strength I didn’t know she possessed, clamped down around my wrist like a vice.

She lunged forward, her momentum yanking me violently along with her. The threshold of the door vanished beneath us.

We burst through the exit, and the transition was so sudden it felt like plunging into ice water. The suffocating, toxic heat of the smoke-filled club was instantaneously replaced by the sharp, biting frost of the night air.

It rushed into my burning lungs, violent and pure, causing my chest to spasm. My senses reeled from the sudden shock of it.

The muffled, rhythmic thud of the club’s bass was suddenly trapped behind the heavy steel door as it swung shut with a dull, echoing clang, isolating us in the sudden, eerie quiet of the outside world.

We were moving too fast, our limbs too uncoordinated from the terror and the lingering effects of the alcohol.

Chiara tripped over the uneven pavement, her knees buckling, and her weight dragged me down with her. We stumbled blindly, our shoes scuffling against the rough concrete as we scrambled to catch our balance, desperately trying to keep from crashing face-first into the dark ground.

But the moment my gaze dropped to find a safe place to plant my feet, the breath completely died in my throat.

The words of relief I was about to choke out withered into nothingness. Sprawled across the damp, cracked asphalt of the alleyway, bathed in the sickly, buzzing amber glow of a single overhead streetlight, were three men.

They weren’t moving. They weren’t breathing. My eyes wide, paralyzed by a fresh wave of horror that made the chaos inside the club seem entirely distant, I stared down at them.

The copper stench of fresh blood hung thick and heavy in the cool night air, overwhelming the faint scent of garbage.

They were all dead. These…these men were Security guards. Michael’s men. Chiara let out a horrified gasp beside me.

My feet felt glued to the pavement, my mind spinning into a dark, chaotic void as I tried to comprehend how the safety of the outside world had instantly transformed into a slaughterhouse.

Before either of us could even find the strength to tear our eyes away from the carnage, a faint, distinct sound broke the heavy silence of the alley.

It was the soft, crisp rustle of expensive fabric shifting against the dark.

My eyes snapped instantly toward the sound, tracking the movement into the deep, impenetrable shadows stretching along the side of the brick building, just beyond the reach of the amber streetlamp.

There, leaning casually against the damp brickwork, stood the tall, unmistakable silhouette of a man.

He was completely unbothered by the freezing temperature, completely unbothered by the three corpses cooling at his feet. One of his hands was buried deep in his trousers pocket, while the other was lifted slightly.

A tiny, glowing orange ember pierced the darkness—the brilliant cherry of a cigarette. As I watched, paralyzed, a slow, deliberate cloud of pale smoke exhaled from his lips, curling lazily upward into the night air before dissolving into the shadows.
