Absolute Mana Dominion: All My Talents Are SSS
Chapter 163 - S-Rank Umbral Root
Chapter 163: 163 - S-Rank Umbral Root
Adrien felt the change before he reached the door. The mana running through his bond to Umbral Root carried a new rhythm, smoother and deeper than before.
Orven opened the door before Amelia could knock. His eyes were red-rimmed, and crystal grit dusted his sleeves.
"You’re on time. Come in. I still need you for the last part."
Umbral Root hung above the workbench inside the holding formation, and at first glance it looked unchanged, down to the old grain along its dark shaft.
Absolute Mana Sense told a different story. The structure had grown denser, new channels coiled around the old ones, and a living web of mana pulsed through the center where the Heartroot had been woven in.
Amelia stopped beside him.
"It still looks like Umbral Root."
"That was the intention. If I had needed to turn it into something unrecognizable to improve it, I would have considered the work a failure."
Adrien stepped closer to the formation.
"And the core held?"
"It did. Better than I expected, although the last stage still depends on you. The new structure has been stabilized around the staff’s existing identity, but it has not fully adapted to your mana yet."
Orven shut down the outer formations, leaving only the holding array humming, and waved Adrien toward the staff.
"I need you to take control of the manifestation again. Do not dismiss it. Feed mana through the bond slowly and let the new core recognize the pattern it is going to live with."
Adrien closed one hand around Umbral Root. The bond sharpened at once, and mana poured from his Core into the staff.
For several seconds nothing happened, and then the Heartroot stirred. The channels inside Umbral Root shifted by fractions, easing into place around the flow Adrien fed them. Aqua, Pyro, Zephyr and every other structure he had cast through it had left traces, and the new core took them all in. A notification appeared.
[Umbral Root]
[Rank: S]
[Swift Channel]
Casting Speed: +45%
[Steady Hand]
Mana lost during shaping: -35%.
Significantly improved spell control.
[Adaptive Conduit]
No Affinity or Aspect receives preferential treatment.
Transitioning between different magical structures becomes considerably smoother.
[Living Core]
Ancient Tree material gradually repairs minor damage while supplied with mana.
Adrien read the window before letting it fade, and found Orven watching him.
"What did the final result register?"
"The rank increased to S. The properties are exactly where you said they would be. Faster casting, less mana lost during shaping, better control, neutral transitions, and the Heartroot can repair minor damage while supplied with mana."
"Now pay attention to what it does not give you. I could have forced more output into the staff, but I would have needed to compromise something else to do it."
Adrien could tell where he was going.
"It doesn’t add direct damage or lower the actual cost of my spells, and nothing in it increases my mana reserve."
"That’s right. This focus is built to keep up with what you already do. It is not going to make your magic stronger for free, and I would distrust any artificer who promised you all of those benefits without taking something in return."
Adrien preferred it that way. Raw power was useful, but it was rarely what held him back.
He lifted Umbral Root. The familiar drain of keeping it manifested remained, though the flow ran steadier now.
Orven jabbed a finger toward the reinforced testing plate.
"Use it. Start the same way you did earlier, and don’t give the staff time to recover between spells. I want to see whether the transition channels behave properly under real use."
Adrien called up a Frost Lance, and the difference showed before the spell was complete. Mana reached the shaping point faster, and the structure locked into place with less correction from him. He hurled the lance into the plate, then switched straight to Pyro.
A Fireball bloomed almost at once. Umbral Root used to need a tiny internal adjustment whenever he jumped between very different structures. It had never been enough to hurt him, but Adrien had always felt it, and now that hitch was gone.
He sent the Fireball forward and shifted into Veil of Mist while the heat still lingered. Mist rolled across the testing area without the faintest drag from the Pyro structure before it.
Orven folded his arms.
"Keep the mist active and move into Zephyr. Don’t slow the transition down for the staff’s sake."
Adrien held the mist in place and cast Zap through it. The spell snapped across the room without disturbing the mist. Umbral Root added no power to either spell, but the switch between them was nearly frictionless.
Adrien lowered the staff.
"That is a much bigger difference than the numbers make it look. I barely felt the staff adjust between the last three structures."
"It usually is. People like simple measurements because they are easy to compare. Control and transition are harder to put on a plaque, but for the right Mage they are worth far more."
Amelia had followed the test from beside the bench.
"Would the same principle apply when he starts using stronger spells through it?"
"The principle will. Whether Adrien himself can handle the spell is a different question. This focus will not remove the mental load or mana requirement of a six-star spell. It simply stops adding unnecessary resistance of its own."
Adrien looked down at Umbral Root and weighed that. The staff would never carry him past his limits, but it had learned to stay out of his way.
He dismissed it, and the staff dissolved into mana before returning to his Inventory. The upkeep vanished with it, yet the bond felt as familiar as ever.
Orven began shutting down the remaining formations, lingering over the ones that had held the core steady.
"I’ll want you to bring it back after you’ve used it properly for a while. The Living Core will keep adjusting during real casting, and there may be minor tweaks worth making once I see how it develops."
"I can do that. You’ve already done more than I expected when I came here."
Orven studied Adrien for several seconds before answering.
"The staff was never the difficult part. The difficult part was building a focus for a Mage who needed all of those things at once."
His gaze dropped briefly to Adrien’s empty hand. He didn’t ask why Adrien needed such an unusual combination of properties, and Adrien offered no explanation. For now, that suited both of them.
