Accidentally Pregnant With The Billionaire Heir
Chapter 226 - 225 The House of Cards 1
JULIAN
The glare of the camera flashes feels less like a celebration and more like a firing squad.
I stand behind the heavy acrylic podium on the main stage of the Asuir City Convention Center. The intense heat of the theatrical spotlights bakes the sweat into the collar of my bespoke navy suit. I grip the edges of the podium. The smooth plastic is slick beneath my damp palms. A hundred reporters sit in the velvet chairs of the auditorium, their camera lenses trained directly on my face.
To my right, Chloe stands like a beacon of absolute confidence. She wears a tailored crimson blazer and matching skirt, her dark hair styled in perfect, cascading waves. She flashes a brilliant, practiced smile at the media. She looks like a woman who just secured the future of modern medicine.
I reach into my jacket pocket and retrieve a small glass vial. It contains a clear, viscous liquid. I hold it up to the lights. The cameras erupt in a blinding frenzy of white flashes.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I announce into the microphone. The amplified sound bounces off the high acoustic ceiling. "Thorne Pharmaceuticals is proud to introduce the apex of cardiovascular tissue regeneration. We bypassed the bloated bureaucracy of standard clinical audits to bring you a miracle. We are initiating mass distribution by the end of the fiscal quarter."
The reporters murmur among themselves. A tall man in the third row stands up. He does not hold a camera. He holds a thick, red-tabbed dossier.
"Mr. Thorne," the man calls out. His voice cuts through the ambient noise with sharp, terrifying clarity. "I represent the independent medical review board of the Etland Medical University. I have a question regarding your synthesis matrix."
My throat closes. I swallow dry air. I glance at Chloe, expecting her to step forward and handle the academic inquiries. Her brilliant smile falters slightly, her perfectly manicured fingers gripping the edge of her clipboard.
"We are taking questions after the presentation," I state, attempting to project authority.
The man ignores me. He steps out of the seating row and walks directly into the center aisle. "We received chemical degradation models from Sterling Pharmaceuticals this morning. Their data indicates your prototype is a volatile beta formula relying on a synthetic binding agent. Our independent laboratory ran a thermal stress test on the sample you provided to the press kit."
The silence in the auditorium turns absolute and suffocating.
"Your drug does not regenerate cardiovascular tissue," the man continues, his words ringing out like gunshots. "It triggers rapid, catastrophic cellular degradation under human body temperatures. You are attempting to market a lethal toxin to the public."
A chaotic roar erupts from the press pool. Reporters jump to their feet, shouting questions, thrusting digital recorders toward the stage.
I take a stumbling step backward. My shoulder blades hit the digital presentation screen. I look at the stock ticker running along the bottom of the teleprompter monitor. The green line of Thorne Pharmaceuticals suddenly drops, forming a violent, vertical red cliff. The investors are dumping our shares live on the floor.
The heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swing open. The sound of heavy boots marching on the carpeted floor cuts through the shouting reporters.
A dozen federal agents in dark windbreakers march down the center aisle. They flank the medical board official, their faces set in grim, uncompromising lines.
"Julian Thorne," the lead agent barks, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are under arrest for massive corporate fraud, intellectual property theft, and public endangerment."
The agents storm up the side stairs of the stage. I cannot breathe. The air in my lungs turns to solid lead. I look at Chloe again, begging for an explanation, demanding a solution. She does not look at me. She takes two rapid steps backward, turning her back on the podium, and sprints toward the stage exit.
An agent grabs my arm, twisting it forcefully behind my back. The cold, heavy steel of the handcuffs snaps around my wrists. The metal bites into my skin. The cameras flash in a blinding, continuous strobe. The Thorne family legacy evaporates into absolute ruin right in front of my eyes.
CHLOE
My heels strike the concrete floor of the backstage corridor in a frantic, uneven rhythm.
I push through a set of heavy fire doors, gasping for breath. The ambient noise of the auditorium fades into a muffled, chaotic roar behind me. I need to reach the parking garage. I need to call my father, secure an aggressive defense attorney, and distance myself entirely from Julian’s catastrophic failure.
I turn the corner leading toward the VIP exit and slam directly into a solid wall of people.
I stumble backward, my leather handbag slipping from my shoulder and hitting the floor. I look up, my heart pounding a frantic, heavy beat against my ribs.
Professor Chase stands in the center of the narrow hallway. He wears his signature tweed jacket, smelling sharply of stale pipe tobacco and bitter coffee. His gray hair is unkempt, but his eyes are hard as flint. Two academic deans from Etland Medical University stand on his left. Three campus security officers stand on his right.
"Professor," I stammer, attempting to smooth the front of my crimson blazer. I force a smile, but my facial muscles twitch with sheer panic. "I am just dealing with a minor public relations issue. Julian made a mistake in the presentation."
"You did not make a mistake, Chloe," Professor Chase says. His voice holds no anger, only a deep, profound disgust. "You made a calculated decision to steal from my private academic files."
The temperature in the corridor drops ten degrees. I shake my head rapidly, stepping back until my spine hits the cold plaster of the hallway wall.
"I don’t know what you are talking about," I lie, my voice rising in pitch.
"Do not insult my intelligence," Professor Chase spits, stepping forward. "Victor Sterling provided the university with security footage from the faculty wing. You bypassed the locks on my filing cabinet. You photographed the preliminary prototype data for SN1818. You stole an outdated, highly volatile beta formula and handed it to a bankrupt corporation."
A group of reporters bursts through the fire doors behind me, their cameras raised, capturing every single word of the confrontation.
"You stole the incomplete work of a medical prodigy," Professor Chase continues, his words echoing loudly for the press to record. "You endangered thousands of lives for the sake of your own vanity. As of this exact moment, you are formally expelled from Etland Medical University. I am stripping you of every academic honor you received under my mentorship."
My knees give out. I slide down the plaster wall, hitting the concrete floor. The impact sends a sharp jolt of pain up my spine.
"You cannot do this to me," I whisper, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes, ruining my immaculate makeup. "I am the top-scoring student in my class. I have a future."
"You have absolutely nothing," the dean of admissions adds, looking down at me with cold contempt. "Your transcripts are voided. You are blacklisted from every medical institution and research facility on this continent. You are finished, Miss Vance."
The reporters crowd around me, snapping photos of my ruined, tear-stained face. The blinding flashes illuminate the dark corridor. Julian is in handcuffs, and my entire life is reduced to ashes on a dirty concrete floor.
