After I Died, the Scumbag Went Mad
Chapter 269 - 268: The Mastermind of the Serial Murders is Victor Quinn
Chapter 269: Chapter 268: The Mastermind of the Serial Murders is Victor Quinn
A cacophony of sounds erupted from outside the experiment chamber, then it all went quiet...
I leaned against the chamber door, my heart sinking.
’They probably aren’t going to make it out.’
Slowly closing my eyes, I slid down the wall in despair and sat on the floor.
’So this is what it feels like... Despair, fury, anger, losing control.’
All these emotions jumbled together. The feeling... it was strange.
"Number 71 shows no vital signs. Number 69 engaged in a suicide attack; subject has been apprehended and will be terminated immediately. Alert! Alert! Number 63 and Number 003 have escaped. Alert, Alert!"
Suddenly, the sound of an alarm blared from outside the chamber.
My eyes shot open, and I jumped to my feet.
’The lead test subject and the newborn... they escaped?’
"Alert! Attacked by members of The Resistance. They’re covering for Number 63. Alert, Alert!"
I clasped my hands, my heart pounding as I stared out of the experiment chamber.
’They’re saved...’
For some reason, my chest tightened, and my eyes began to well up.
’They got out. They actually got out!’
It was as if a rip had been torn in the darkness, letting a sliver of light shine through...
’They escaped!’
Two test subjects sacrificed themselves to hold back the mercenaries, allowing Number 63 to escape with the baby.
I turned, looking at the other test subjects in the chamber.
They were all standing at the chamber door as one, as if they had seen a glimmer of hope.
A flicker of light seemed to return to their once-numb eyes.
The male test subjects hadn’t taken the pregnant and non-pregnant women with them because they knew that once outside the chamber, they would be facing almost certain death.
They would be the ones to brave the path to Hell. If there was even the slightest chance of survival, they would surely return to save the women.
"Number 63... escaped!"
Outside the experiment chamber, a panicked Nathan Lawson rushed in with her people, inspecting and observing the chambers.
She angrily kicked a chamber door and gritted her teeth. "We absolutely cannot let a test subject leave the organization. They must be eliminated!"
Nathan Lawson was the person in charge of this lab. With such a major incident, the leaders behind the scenes would probably not let her off easily.
Test subjects who have never been socialized are a blank slate to the outside world. They have no identification, no birth certificate, nothing...
Once people like this appear in society, they are untraceable.
They don’t even have their fingerprints registered. Their DNA is very likely identical to that of the socialized test subjects.
To look at it from a terrifying angle, if a test subject from the lab went out and killed someone, leaving behind fingerprints or a blood sample, the police might end up arresting a socialized test subject living out in the world.
For example, if a Cecilia Caldwell Number 2 were to kill someone, the DNA match would ultimately lead back to the original Cecilia Caldwell.
"At all costs! Eliminate Number 63," Nathan Lawson spoke again, her voice trembling slightly.
This was a major incident.
I looked at Nathan Lawson with schadenfreude and sneered. "Once the test subjects are exposed, the evidence for The Genetics Organization’s God Creation Plan will be laid bare before the public. When that happens... it won’t matter if you all go into hiding."
This would spell doom for the organization.
Nathan Lawson’s anger hadn’t subsided. She turned and looked at me. "The Resistance could never find the lab’s exact location, but then you came... and they somehow discovered this place, and even had the time and a plan to get someone out. Silvia Lynch... you’re quite something."
Nathan Lawson thought I had conspired with The Resistance to rescue Number 63.
"The lab’s protocols are strict. What ability could I possibly have to get someone out?" I laughed. ’She really gives me too much credit.’
Nathan Lawson walked to my experiment chamber, suddenly pressed a button on the outside, and gas began to flood in. I couldn’t breathe and collapsed to the floor in pain.
"Check every inch of her body for a tracking device!" Nathan Lawson commanded. She suspected me.
My consciousness faded, and I passed out.
’I knew exactly what was happening. Nathan Lawson was taking her anger out on me. Before the organization’s leadership could punish her, she was going to make me her punching bag.’
Sure enough... when I woke up, I was in an operating room.
She deliberately kept the anesthesiologist away and had one of my molars pulled out while I was fully conscious.
Pain and the taste of blood filled my mouth. I clenched my fists, pounding them against the operating table.
"Does it hurt?" Nathan Lawson sneered, holding up the tooth with a pair of tweezers. "Silvia Lynch, planting a tracking device this sophisticated in your tooth, all to expose the lab’s location? I knew it... You’re the variable. This whole ’rebirth’ story was a lie, wasn’t it? A ploy to make The Genetics Organization interested enough to bring you back!"
I froze, looking in shock at the tooth in Nathan Lawson’s hand.
’Why is there a tracking device inside it?’
’I haven’t had any work done on my teeth since I was reborn.’
’This can only mean one thing: before I took over... Silvia Lynch had this done.’
Suddenly, a chill ran down my spine.
’Was Silvia Lynch... a member of The Resistance?’
"I’ve said it many times: soul transmigration technology can’t possibly exist! But the organization insisted on bringing you back, thinking you could bring them more value..." Nathan Lawson threw down the tooth and grabbed my neck. "You’re not a reborn Cecilia Caldwell at all. You are Silvia Lynch... You even managed to fool yourself, which is how you fooled us."
Nathan Lawson suddenly laughed, as if she’d had an epiphany. She looked at the mercenary beside her with cold eyes. "Have you found what I asked you to find?"
"Victor Quinn’s daughter has been captured," the man replied.
’Lynn? They brought Lynn here...?’
I struggled violently, turning my head to spit out a mouthful of blood before I could barely speak. "What are you trying to do... I don’t know what you’re talking about!"
"You’ll find out soon enough." Nathan Lawson grabbed my hair and gestured for the people beside her to take me to the interrogation room.
Nathan Lawson needed to find the truth before the organization punished her.
A strange panic bloomed in my chest as I was led to the interrogation room.
In the interrogation room, Lynn was tied to a chair, screaming, shaking her head, and crying.
’They must have drugged Lynn...’
"My dad... and Silvia Lynch... knew each other..."
Lynn was saying that Victor Quinn and Silvia Lynch knew each other.
’So Silvia Lynch wasn’t so simple after all.’
’She and Victor Quinn were working together.’
"After Cecilia Caldwell died, my dad had Silvia Lynch disguise herself as Cecilia to attract the attention of the organization and the financial oligarchs. The organization would bring Silvia Lynch back as a precious test subject, and that way... the lab’s location would be exposed..."
"My dad... is one of the Rebels... one of the architects... of the serial killer case."
Lynn shook her head in agony, crying and clenching her hands.
Victor Quinn was one of the masterminds of the serial killer case, and he had put himself right in the middle of it...
And Erin Whittaker was just one of his pawns.
It turned out that what Victor Quinn really wanted to destroy was The Genetics Organization all along.
"We received news from the hospital today. Victor Quinn is dead," Nathan Lawson said coldly, yanking my hair again. "I have to admit, Victor Quinn was a genius. As one of the leaders of The Resistance, he hid himself remarkably well..."
’Who could have guessed that the psychiatrist The Genetics Organization trusted was actually one of the leaders of The Resistance?’
"The Meridia police have already found the mastermind of the serial killer case. In the basement of an abandoned mental hospital, they found evidence of Victor Quinn’s murder plans and proof that he bought the ruined building in North Myarra. He started planning everything many years ago... Cecilia Caldwell’s parents, Marcus Lancaster, they were all among the founders of The Resistance..." Nathan Lawson took out her phone and showed me the day’s news.
The serial killer case was solved.
The true mastermind behind it was the famous psychiatrist, Victor Quinn...
With that, the serial killer case was completely closed.
’But really... was it just Victor Quinn?’
’Is the serial killer case really over?’
