After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 557: A Guilty Conscience
A heavy silence fell over the interrogation room.
"So you also killed your former teammates in the Ignis squad." Ian’s tone was laced with anger.
Lucas chuckled. "Even though we left the squad, they couldn’t survive without the two of us. I simply told them we found some supplies and asked them to meet us outside the base. They came completely defenseless."
"Despicable!" Myra wanted nothing more than to stand up and slap him across the face.
It turned out that even before the Soul Slayer squad, members of another team had lost their lives because of "trust."
"Later, Evander intentionally left some clues to bait those who were secretly looking for us. We originally thought the Soul Slayer squad would fight them to a mutual destruction. Who would’ve thought Caleb and his people were so weak? And they called themselves an elite squad," Lucas scoffed, shaking his head.
"Actually, you two had already hatched this plan even before Caleb’s group was rescued. Even those so-called potions Caleb and his team found were fakes you deliberately swapped in, right?" Nina asked.
Prior to this, the two of them had already been brought in once for picking fights, but they were released after being locked up for only three days.
A strange light flickered in Lucas’s eyes. "That’s because you have no idea how miraculous those potions are! They can heal any injury, no matter what it is. We were waiting to sell them for a good price later. How could we possibly use such good stuff as bait? Of course we swapped them out for fakes, hahaha."
"Which means your plan was doomed to fail from the very beginning." Nina looked at Lucas. Fools truly harmed both others and themselves when they committed evil acts.
"Why?" Lucas didn’t believe her. In his opinion, their plan only fell apart because they chose Cassia. They should have chosen a Superpower User, and then they wouldn’t have been discovered.
"Because those people had absolutely no idea who took their supplies," Nina explained. Otherwise, given the strength of Finn—the man in black—and his group, Evander and Lucas wouldn’t have survived to see a second day.
"You and Evander were just feeling guilty. You thought they were investigating you and were even convinced they’d find you sooner or later. Because you were holding onto too many supplies, it made you feel incredibly unsafe.
"But something you did later completely exposed you. You thought you were being clever by placing the box of fake potions there," Nina said. She had never seen such self-righteous fools. "You two were only targeted by those people in the last few days. You’ve only survived this long by a fluke because you’ve been hiding here. The inside and outside of the Enforcement Bureau are already swarming with their men. The moment you take a single step out of here..."
Nina stared at Lucas. Even if she hadn’t exposed them, these two were already dead men walking.
"Is this what Chase found out too?" Sherry asked from the side. Even she hadn’t noticed that the Enforcement Bureau was being watched.
"Yes and no, because they fled too quickly," Nina replied.
The base had only just been locked down, but those people had already gotten word and were preparing to run. At that time, the bureau hadn’t made any arrests, nor had they leaked any information. When Chase was investigating the two earlier, someone who had taken a bribe from him mentioned that another person had come around yesterday asking about Evander and Lucas. That was why she was certain those people had only just found out in the past few days. Eyes and ears had likely already been planted all over the Enforcement Bureau.
Lucas revealed an expression of sheer disbelief. "Are you saying that if we had just done nothing, no one would have ever found us?"
Seeing Nina nod, Lucas’s face instantly went deathly pale.
What was the point of all their previous planning, then? Ever since they acquired this windfall, he and Evander hadn’t had a single good night’s sleep. They felt that their only way to survive was to tread carefully at every step. Would they really not have been discovered at all?
"No, it was only a matter of time," Nina shot down his assumption. "You just said you planned to sell the potions for a good price later. That intention alone would have cost you your lives.
"Because those potions are Holy Water," she said, placing the medicine bottle on the table.
Myra, Adrian, and the others, who had been listening with furrowed brows, unanimously showed expressions of shock.
"Nina, are you saying those two boxes of potions are... Holy Water?" Daniel stood up, asking in disbelief.
"At least this bottle should be," Nina answered. Lucas wouldn’t have taken out a fake one to heal his own ear.
"Holy Water? The Holy Water?! The one that can cure any illness?" Justin’s hands trembled slightly as he held the bottle. He had awakened a Strength Element Superpower and was terrified he might accidentally crush the glass.
Not far away, Lucas slumped in his seat. He laughed with an ashen face, muttering, "So... it was all for nothing... It was all for nothing..."
Seeing Justin and the rest staring at the bottle of potion in absolute shock, Sherry spoke up. "Um... we already had him take out all the supplies from his spatial storage. They’re just next door. Do you want to go take a look?" She remembered there seemed to be quite a few more bottles of this kind of potion.
"Captain, it’s confirmed. The people we arrested today are indeed the Superpower User squad Argent," Jessica walked in and reported.
In the empty room next door, the supplies taken from Lucas’s spatial storage piled high, filling the entire space. Among them, there were a total of thirty-two bottles of potions suspected to be Holy Water.
To be safe, Sherry even used a Truth-telling Talisman on Lucas. Only after confirming his answer that there was no more stolen loot in his space did she feel relieved.
Adrian stared at the thirty-two bottles of Holy Water in front of him, lost in thought. Before this, who could have imagined that so much Holy Water would be found just within the City D Base alone?
"Command Headquarters also managed to collect three bottles of this stuff through various channels and had the ingredients analyzed. Unfortunately, the results only showed unknown components," Adrian said. Because of this, it made them even more baffled about where this Holy Water had come from.
"That’s easy. Just have Sherry test it with her Talisman Paper, and we’ll know," Myra said.
The members of Argent had been captured, and the next step was interrogation. However, the questioning, which should have gone smoothly, dragged on for five whole days.
"Did Sherry’s Talisman Paper fail?" Nina asked.
She hadn’t participated in the interrogations these past few days, but Ian would come by daily to update her on their contents and progress. Today, Myra had specifically invited her to the conference room.
"It didn’t exactly fail. It’s just that it had no effect on a specific few, and these people are all our fellow Drakonians," Myra said, placing the investigation report in front of Nina. "But thanks to this interrogation, we also learned what Veridia has been doing recently."
Veridia’s target was indeed supplies. But it was Drakonia’s supplies.
Justin spoke with unparalleled anger, "Veridia never had its own domestic industries to begin with. Before the apocalypse, they mainly relied on imported supplies, and after the apocalypse, they were driven straight to a dead end. Now, they’ve set their sights on our Drakonia. If they were just stealing supplies, that would be one thing, but they’ve also killed quite a few Drakonians under the guise of a ’Great Universal Harmony,’ claiming that survival in the apocalypse knows no borders. It’s absolutely ridiculous!"
Nina looked at the investigation report in her hand and asked, feigning surprise, "Their stronghold is in Stenmore?"
Adrian replied, "According to our interrogation, they plan to occupy Stenmore first and then use it as their stronghold."
"If it’s Stenmore, they probably wouldn’t dare occupy it openly yet, right?" Nina asked.
