Chapter 494: Three Roads Collapse Together

  • Next Chapter

The fourth line opened the archive door, though the city bells interrupted before the Warden could lift the white mask from its lock.

Three different alarms crossed the registry at once, each carrying a separate route image through the floor.

The images showed refugee carts sinking, an expedition bridge splitting, and city riders surrounded by black-backed beasts.

Sera turned toward the three lines and named the crisis. "The hearts have activated together, and the command layer is sending the same emergency order through every district."

Hajin opened his hand toward the table, then stopped when he saw the three positions divide around him.

"We name the people first, then assign the roads," he said, "because I cannot stand in three places by wanting to be there."

Eirwen’s twelve Shards brightened as she chose her own ground. "The western bridge carries our expedition and the refugees behind it, so I take the bridge before the roots break."

Juna raised one white Wing and took the second post. "I take the upper span with Eirwen, because the sky bridges are falling toward the same road."

Hajin caught her wrist before she could turn, and he kissed her once, brief enough to survive a war.

"Hold the span until every civilian crosses," he ordered against her jaw, "then bring yourself back, because that part is a promise."

She answered the order with her wings flaring white, and she left the tower without looking back.

Loccy stepped over to Rumi and Nari, claiming the north for three. "The northern riders need ground support, so I take the escort with the twins."

Rumi tightened her map cord and split the shared work. "I follow Loccy’s route, and Nari fixes the return path before the beasts close it."

Nari nodded once in agreement and added her own condition. "I will mark every rider who remains alive, then seal the retreat only after the city gives us a stable boundary."

Hajin looked toward the eastern image and took the worst road. "I take the refugee road, because the carts are already inside the heart’s collapse and the people cannot fight their way out."

Ferra moved to the table and kept the registry whole. "I stay in the registry, because someone must keep the three heart signals separate."

Vella raised her Spirit Ring and picked her patient pool. "I go with Hajin until the refugee route stabilizes, then I return to whichever road carries the most wounded."

Didi stepped toward the eastern line with five Shards above her shoulders. "I go with the refugees, though every person remains free to refuse my Brand while I protect the carts."

Ash stood beside the Watcher and asked the quiet question. "Where do we go if the city road closes behind everyone?"

The Watcher looked at the three burning images and answered him. "We stay with the road that remembers a living boundary, and we don’t become an anchor because the city is afraid."

Aria displayed a warning above Hajin’s wrist while the routes burned.

[Three heart emergency overlap, simultaneous route collapse detected, single host coverage insufficient]

’The city created the problem the sealed archive described,’ Hajin thought while the floor split, ’though the answer belongs to a future technique.’

The eastern floor broke open, black water rose around carts, and a white gate opened beneath them.

Hajin drew the cold Chain and gave the movement order. "Move the carts toward the high stones, and nobody follows a route that opens beneath a person."

Didi spread Crowned Frost across the nearest wheels, creating a hard line that kept the carts from sliding into the river gate.

Vella placed her hand above a frightened horse and read the pressure. "Route pressure runs through their hooves, so free the harness before the city counts them as anchors."

Toven cut the harness as Mera guided families toward high stones, and the river heart pulled harder beneath the road.

Hajin opened one Ring and set Aegis across the water, though the shield held only the space directly before him.

The Chain caught a black line beneath the nearest cart, and Hajin pulled until the route showed a buried heart wrapped in white roots.

Aria displayed a route notice above Hajin’s wrist after the road split.

[Eastern heart exposed, refugee road unstable, civilian anchor pressure active]

Hajin kept the Aegis raised high and set the target. "The heart is using the carts to decide where the river belongs, so cut the lines without dropping the road beneath us."

Vella freed the horses while Didi froze the wheels, and refugees crossed the high stones one family at a time.

Far west, Eirwen’s voice reached the relay from the bridge. "The bridge split into three living roots, and white pressure is entering all of them."

Juna answered him over the cold wind of her Wings. "We hold the upper span, though the bridge carries the expedition toward the empty ravine."

Hajin heard the strain, but eastern water rose across his feet before he could answer.

"Eirwen, Juna, keep the bridge open for the people already on it," he said, "and don’t spend strength waiting for me to reach you."

Eirwen replied for both of them, quite plainly and finally. "We will hold it, and the bridge will remember that you chose the road with the most trapped bodies."

The northern relay broke into Rumi’s voice as she called out. "The riders are surrounded, and the beasts are pushing them toward the city wall rather than killing them."

Loccy answered her at once with the quick tactical read. "Then they are herding the escort toward a heart, and we cut the herd without dropping the wall on the riders."

Nari’s clear voice followed hers a moment later across the relay. "The return route is moving, though I have fixed one exit behind the western tower."

Hajin pulled the eastern black line free of the cart and issued the last order north. "Use that exit when it opens, and keep the riders together until the route stops choosing their feet."

The river heart surged, and the high stones began sinking beneath the refugees.

Didi raised both hands as Crowned Frost spread in a broad ring. "The line protects the people who accept it, though I won’t close their route if they choose another path."

Several families stepped inside the frost, while two travelers moved toward Mera and refused the royal mark.

Didi turned the frost aside for them without any complaint. "Their refusal remains open, so give them the dry stones and let the route recognize their own steps."

Hajin drove the Chain into the exposed heart, though the black roots pulled toward his arm. They tried to use his Ring as a replacement position.

He tightened his burning grip against the hungry root pull. "You get one answer from me, and you don’t get my body as the second heart."

Ferra’s voice entered the registry relay with a fresh warning. "The city is forcing the same command through the western and northern hearts, while every delay transfers pressure to the eastern one."

Hajin replied to her without ever turning from the water. "Keep the signals apart, because we cannot win three roads by letting the engine turn them into one collapse."

Ferra drove a copper pin into the registry table, and the eastern heart’s pressure weakened for one breath.

Hajin pulled the black core from beneath the cart road, and the river gate closed without taking a person.

Aria displayed a second notice above Hajin’s wrist after the heart collapsed.

[Eastern route stabilized, civilian anchor released, two hostile lines remain active]

The Stream watched one man refuse to be three men.

[ ShadowMage44: ] bro picked one road and trusted his people with the other two, that is leader stuff

[ JunaFanClub: ] the kiss before the bridge hold, war romance delivered to my door

[ NewViewer_02: ] three emergencies, one of him, and he still delegated instead of splitting himself

Hajin faced the two remaining images while relay voices from Eirwen, Juna, Loccy, Rumi, and Nari overlapped.

"I cannot reach both roads," he told them, "so finish your assignments without waiting for me to become the answer."

Eirwen replied to him at once from the western span. "The bridge is ours, and the people crossing it are already choosing where to place their feet."

Loccy answered him from up on the northern herd road. "The riders are ours, and the twins have fixed a road that doesn’t belong to the city heart."

Hajin lowered Aegis as the last carts reached high stones, while Vella stepped between refugees and the fading river line.

Didi closed her frost around the people who accepted it, leaving a separate dry path beside them for those who refused.

The eastern heart sank beneath black soil, though the bridge and escort continued toward their own breaking points.

Hajin marked both images on the registry table while the water drained.

’Delegation is not failure when the people on another road still have someone who chose to stand there.’

The city bells rang again as Eirwen’s relayed root-light settled over the eastern record. She waited for its voice to answer without borrowing the other two hearts.
