The Eastern Reach had been free for exactly forty minutes when three more districts stopped being separate at once.

Canal Row, the Western Terraces, plus the Foundry Quarter all lit up within the same heartbeat, blue lines pulsing in one slow unison count across the whole skyline.

Hajin was still holding the Reach’s separated rhythm when the new weight arrived, and his locked note bent under it like a bridge cable taking a third engine.

"Three additional compulsory layers confirmed across the city."

Aria laid the districts across his sight in cold geometry.

"You cannot hold one frequency and lock three more. The technique itself reaches only one target at any given time."

He tried anyway, because trying was the only honest response to the impossible count, and the cost of the attempt arrived immediately.

The Reach’s rhythm slipped in the second minute, and the freed bakers who had dropped their spears picked them back up with empty eyes.

Letting go of the Reach restored all of those people to their separate selves.

Reaching for all three districts at once failed everywhere, because every allocation he made stole two whole districts from somebody.

"It is the mountain again, multiplied."

His voice stayed level while six Rings burned against the strain.

"One structure, one lock, and tonight there are three demands against one of me."

[ LurkerNoMore: ] one lock per god chord and three chords just stood up. the math is cruel

[ ShadowMage44: ] bro is being asked to be four places and the system keeps saying one

"Then stop being one place," Juna said quietly beside him, which was the whole future of his power in five words neither of them knew yet.

The district maps folded into Aria’s projection, and the tally inside them was worse than the strain.

Canal Row held the shelter row plus its hundred sleeping residents, and the Western Terraces held the engine’s western anchor.

The Foundry Quarter held something far worse than broken anchors. A school street with forty-one children stood trapped between the occupied housing blocks, and the compulsory pattern was marching that street toward the canal as a living shield wall.

"The school street falls inside ninety seconds," Aria said without any softening.

"The other two districts hold longer. The children inside that street do not get any longer than that."

Everything in him wanted to be three separate men at once. The want itself was the wound, because the want had been the wound since the first Gate, and the world kept presenting it in bigger fonts.

Didi had walked in from the river gate an hour before the split, frost still on her shoulders from the line she had never once left. She set her five Shards down beside the map like an instrument returning to its orchestra, and nobody asked where she had been, because everyone knew what she had been holding.

"Split the command," Hajin said. "Juna takes Canal Row with the twins and Didi."

"Loccy holds the Foundry approaches with Eirwen so the occupied blocks stay standing."

"Ferra and Vella keep the Reach’s separation anchored while I take the school street alone."

"The street alone?"

Both of Juna’s ears went completely flat against her skull.

"Forty-one children plus a full compulsory pattern, and you want to face it alone."

"The pattern moves as one thing, so it turns as one thing."

He was already running the canal path with six Rings open and Phase Lock released from the Reach.

"One thing that turns slowly cannot catch one man who is already inside the turning."

"Then come back out of it," she said to his back, and her voice carried the entire weight of their shared history inside five level words.

[ JunaFanClub: ] she said I love you in five words and every viewer felt it

Canal Row got Juna’s four Wings like a sunrise with opinions, and the district’s compulsory pattern learned what a solar vanguard did to a shared footing. Didi’s frost locked the shelter row’s lines into stillness while Rumi and Nari opened mirrored routes through the district’s two halves faster than the pattern could close either one.

The Foundry Quarter got Loccy at full Burdenfall readiness with her arms finally awake, holding the school street’s mouth like a wall that had decided to care. Eirwen’s roots split the foundry floor so the occupied blocks could not lock into one shared footing.

The Reach kept its fragile freedom through Ferra’s wedges and Vella’s patient gold, two women holding a braided core apart with their bare hands while a war moved around them.

Neither of them could leave that stone for even a minute, and neither of them complained about it, which was its own kind of love letter.

Juna peeled toward Canal Row without another word, because arguing with him in motion had never once worked in eleven districts of war.

Hajin arrived at the school street with eleven seconds left on Aria’s count.

Forty-one children stood in rows between the housing blocks, breathing on the shared count, small spears rising and falling on the unison beat.

The compulsory pattern saw him arrive and began turning the whole street toward the canal like a barge coming about, forty-one small oars dipping on one count.

A child in the second row was still holding a half-eaten bread roll, and her small hands kept the shared count with it.

That single small detail was honestly the worst thing he had seen all week long.

He crossed the turning radius at a dead run while the pattern was still committed to its arc, putting himself bodily between the children and the water.

Phase Lock caught the school street’s shared rhythm and held the whole count dead still, forty-one small hearts suddenly answering to no one.

Forty-one small bodies stumbled out of the unison count at once, and the whole street filled with the sound of children suddenly allowed to be frightened again.

"Behind the wall lady," he told the children, because Loccy’s silhouette at the street’s mouth had become the most beautiful architecture in the entire city.

The compulsory layer drove the occupied adults forward the moment the children slipped its grip.

The school street became the worst kind of corridor, one man holding one locked note against a hundred advancing neighbors who could not stop apologizing with their eyes.

The pattern could not turn faster than its own shared footing, and it could not leave the street while he held its note.

It also could not reach the children without going through him, and going through him required agreement he had no intention of supplying.

He held with boots sliding backward, six Rings bright, one locked note ringing. Three districts hung on the people he trusted, and the count of one screamed from every direction.

This was the shape of the wound, and the wound was teaching him at full volume.

Somewhere behind the burn, his bloodline was taking notes with terrible patience.

[ CringeSlayer91: ] he cannot be four places and today everybody watched the problem arrive

[ NewViewer_02: ] next time this happens he is going to need more of him

The school street held through every single second of the assault.

The children reached Loccy’s arms in twos and threes, carried or herded through the gap while their guardians wept through the compulsory count.

When the last child crossed, Hajin released the note and let the pattern turn onto empty stone.

The street’s shared wall marched itself into a foundry wall with a sound like a city breaking its own word.

He stood in the settling dust of one street out of one district out of one city, and the count of one burned in his forearms like a brand.

Across the city, the freed districts were learning to breathe out of step, awkward plus weeping plus fully alive.

[ NewViewer_02: ] three districts, one man, forty one kids, and the girls each held a city block alone

[ CringeSlayer91: ] he won every fight today and still lost the argument with himself

Thirty-eight days of sky remained, and the problem that would eventually solve him had finally introduced itself properly, face to face.
