Chapter 543: Five Routes under One Mark

  • Next Chapter

Lucan drew five black routes across the empty floor, using blood that vanished whenever it touched the completed audit seal.

Each line began beneath the warrant, then bent toward a different point beneath the Last City while Hajin watched their pressure.

Hajin stood beside him with five Rings open, and Didi kept the completed seal from turning another pulse into a command.

"These are retrieval routes," Lucan said. "The Collector stands at their center, while five lesser cores wait behind it."

Cessy sat on the bed’s far side with Vella’s gold wrapped around her safe wounds, and her eyes stayed fixed on the black map.

"They are not agents like us," she said. "Their complete cores are committed to the crossing."

Hajin looked from the five lines toward the empty square beyond the camp walls, where the wardens were clearing the last carts.

"Explain complete," Hajin said. "Does a complete core mean the body here can truly die?"

Lucan placed one finger above the nearest route without touching the seal, while the black line pulsed beneath his hand.

"My body contains only a crossing portion of my core. The same is true for Cessy, so destroying this body does not kill us below."

He moved his finger along the black route, tracing its descent beneath the foundation before stopping at the empty square.

"Those five sent their full cores into the route. Their bodies are being built here, and nothing remains below to return them."

Aria opened a clean record beside Hajin’s vision, separating the coming bodies from the two wounded agents already inside Ouro.

Hajin read the panel, then closed one Ring while the route pressure shifted around his wrist beneath the black seal.

"No experience appears until a body enters Ouro and dies here," he said.

"Correct," Aria replied inside his thoughts. "Route preparation carries no kill credit."

Ferra moved between the five lines with a ceramic gauge in each hand, while her charcoal marks kept the routes separate.

"The lines do not share a physical approach," she said. "Only the audit’s authority connects them to the destination it wants."

Rumi touched the floor beside the first black line, then pulled her hand away before the route could answer her mark.

"I can mark the square, though I cannot open through a foreign road."

Nari placed two fingers near the final route while keeping the archive wall behind her back against the gathering pressure.

"I can close a route after the body exposes it. I cannot close the whole court from this side."

Eirwen studied the dead foundation beneath the camp, then lifted one silverwood arrow toward the civilian boundary beyond the square.

"My Zone cannot answer this ground without living roots," she said. "I can still prepare a witness line around the empty square."

"Do that," Hajin replied. "The square stays empty, and every route receives one measured approach."

Juna stepped beside him, then slid a fresh strap beneath the damaged bracer across his right forearm while the routes pulsed.

The strap crossed the old wound without pressing the foreign frequency deeper, while her fingers tested the movement beneath his sleeve.

"You are going to stand in the center again," she said. "Try not to make the center your permanent address."

Hajin glanced down at her hands, then flexed his fingers against the pain traveling through his shoulder beneath the fresh strap.

"The strap is too tight."

"It is exactly tight enough to stop you pretending your arm is fine during another six-Ring argument."

She tugged the end once, then tapped his chest above the heart that kept the six Rings connected beneath his skin.

"If the pain changes direction, you tell me before Aria has to report it," Juna said.

The request landed closer than the strap, and Hajin nodded while the five routes pulsed beneath the floor around them.

"You will hear it before the system does, even if I have to shout through the route," he replied.

Juna’s ears rose, pleased despite the danger, while Ferra pretended her gauges required immediate attention beside the black map beneath the square.

The Stream showed the five black routes to everyone watching, and the comments arrived before the first body crossed the empty square.

Loccy carried the final empty cart beyond the outer stones, then returned to the square with both hands bare beneath the gray morning.

"No civilians remain," she said. "The wardens cleared the houses and the market lane."

The Watcher stood beside the old archive stair with Ash on her shoulder, while one broad hand supported the boy without gripping him.

Her rose-gold eyes remained on the audit seal, though Ash watched the five lines beneath the city with open curiosity.

"The routes are using the same refusal-node grammar that brought the Collector before," the Watcher said. "They are not ancient custodians."

Ash pointed toward the western stone, where two black pulses answered the gesture from below through the old foundation beneath his feet.

"Five roads, one dark hand."

"That is a useful description," Ferra said. "Keep the boy outside the center."

The Watcher moved Ash behind the cleared boundary, then waited for him to choose whether he wanted to keep watching.

Ash kept one hand around her wrist while he looked toward Hajin for the rule that mattered beneath the foreign pressure.

Hajin raised two fingers, giving the signal for distance rather than a command that might make the boy a key.

Ash nodded, then stayed with the Watcher while the five routes searched for a better entrance beneath the city’s stone.

Didi’s frost held the completed seal at its outer ring, though the pressure kept testing the royal current beneath her palm.

"The route is looking for a royal answer," she said. "It keeps testing the bloodline mark without entering the child."

Lucan’s black blood faded from the floor, leaving five faint lines beneath the stone that no ordinary clerk could have seen.

"The Collector will use the royal response as a landing bridge," he said. "The lesser cores will cross after it makes the route stable."

Hajin looked toward the room where Elina, Cessy, and Vella watched the child beneath the Sanctuary’s waiting warrant inside the guarded room.

"Can the smaller cores reach her directly?"

"They can reach the completed warrant," Lucan replied. "Whether that reaches the Sanctuary depends on the first body they send."

Vella stepped from the room with gold still circling her fingers, while the child remained under Elina’s quiet watch beyond the door.

"The old designation damaged her breathing rhythm," Vella said. "Her core remains stable, though the route is learning where fear lives."

Hajin kept his voice low enough for the room beyond the door to remain calm while the routes gathered outside.

Lucan looked toward him, with his expression carrying no comfort and no attempt to soften the coming danger beneath the seal.

"We protect the room while the routes are measured," Hajin said.

"The Collector will not grant you time to measure once its body arrives," Lucan warned.

"Then we work while it moves," Hajin replied.

The first black line rose from the floor and formed a narrow vertical seam, while Nari turned toward its pressure.

"Not yet," Rumi said, touching the stone she had marked. "The seam has no body behind it."

The seam closed, then the second line opened near the market wall with a hooked shadow pressed against its far edge.

Ferra’s gauges rang against their ceramic handles, and she lowered one hand before the shadow could become a false measurement.

"The routes are testing five distances," she said. "They are finding which approach carries the least resistance."

Hajin opened his sixth Ring, and the pressure inside the square changed around the five hidden roads beneath his feet.

The routes recoiled from the golden circulation, though none closed while the foreign authority continued gathering behind their seams beneath the city.

[ Active Rings: 6 ]

[ Foreign Route Pressure: Increased ]

The third route opened in the center of the square, and an obsidian finger pressed through before withdrawing into darkness.

No body followed the finger, though the force inside it dragged Hajin’s boots toward the seam beneath the broken market road.

"That was a test limb," Aria said. "Its source remains beyond the route."

"A fragment of the Collector’s crossing method?" Juna asked, watching Hajin’s face instead of the panel he alone could see while the black seam narrowed beneath the marked stone.

"Something that learned how to cross without becoming the Collector itself," he answered, while the six Rings tightened around his arm.

The fourth route opened beneath the archive stair, and the Watcher moved Ash farther behind her broad body against the black seam.

Her free hand lowered toward the stone, though the seam closed before any claw reached the boundary beside the archive.

Lucan’s expression became colder while the route carried the scent of old refusal grammar toward the boy through the stair.

"It noticed Ash through the unknown designation."

Hajin turned toward the Watcher, who kept Ash’s feet planted behind the line while the route searched for him beneath the archive.

"Keep him behind the inner boundary."

"Ash is under my protection," the Watcher replied. "No route reaches him without passing through me first."

Her answer carried no promise beyond her own body, and Hajin trusted the limit more than a larger claim beneath the foreign road.

The fifth route opened at the far edge of the square, where Eirwen’s prepared witness line had left the ground empty.

This time, a voice crossed before the seam closed, and the words carried no name for the person they threatened.

"Royal recovery is authorized."

Didi’s frost answered the declaration, while the completed audit seal burned beneath the camp through the dark foundation below them.

The five routes aligned at once, pointing toward the empty square beneath one authority and one approaching body from below.

Every seam aimed at the same center, and the black pressure behind them began forming one hand above the empty stones.

Lucan stepped away from the lines, while Cessy remained in Vella’s care near the protected room beyond the doorway behind him.

"The Collector is coming first," he said. "The five cores will follow its crossing."

Hajin felt Juna’s hand find the back of his coat, while the Watcher drew Ash against her shoulder behind the boundary.

Rumi and Nari took their marked positions, Eirwen raised her bow, while Loccy planted both feet against the square’s oldest stone.

Didi held the warrant’s outer ring with five Shards, while Ferra lifted her gauges toward the forming wrist above the crater.

The black hand reached through the aligned routes, and the audit finished counting the space between worlds beneath the city.

The Collector began to enter the empty square through a route that had already learned their names beneath the waiting city.
