All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 552: Returning The Hurt

The clone caught the first burn against the wall, turning his right wrist away from the child’s blanket before the Ring above it flared.

The closure had reached the shared soul, finding the single assigned Ring at the doorway even though no intruder had stepped through the chosen gap.

He pressed his shoulder harder against the wall, the stone scraping through his shirt while the burn climbed beneath the pathway feeding his single Ring.

The ordinary watch remained in the corridor, the task around him still held by people whose presence did not depend on keeping this body awake.

’Finish the watch without taking her doorway with you.’

He released the blanket corner carefully, leaving its weight with the child instead of dragging it off her knees when the next tremor reached his fingers.

She watched the Ring above his wrist, drawing her feet closer while he kept the burning arm turned away from the bed.

"Can I go back now?"

Her gaze moved toward the gap, checking the corridor before returning to the place where he had been sitting beside the wall.

He waited while she found the guard through the gap, his left hand flattening against his knee to keep its shaking from drawing her eyes back.

"The door stays like that?"

"Just where you left it."

The child slipped down far enough to reach the stone wedge beside the brace, lifting it with both hands while the clone kept himself between her and his burning Ring.

She put it into his left hand, the offered weight giving him something ordinary to hold while she looked directly at his face.

"Go back."

He nodded, lowering the wedge beside the mark where it would remain instead of letting it fall across her feet when the body disappeared.

She settled the blanket across her knees with both hands, its corner catching on her foot before she tugged it free with a small impatient movement.

He gave the guard a final look toward the chosen gap, keeping the child’s doorway unchanged as he ended the brief task she had released him from.

The one-Ring body dissolved before its eight-minute limit, still within the permitted distance of the original waiting at the closed observation seam.

The last thing he saw was the wedge beside the brace, its rough edge resting against the chalk while the child looked up from her blanket.

[ Ring clone: Voluntarily dissolved ]

[ Sanctuary exposure: Prevented ]

[ Assigned Ring return: 30 seconds ]

Hajin’s knees failed as the returned pain reached him, the memory of the burning doorway crashing into the scar in front of his eyes.

Juna caught his head before it struck the floor, turning with the fall while Vella moved from Cessy’s secured position to take the other side.

The scream escaped him without permission, his right arm drawing inward against a burn that had happened in the other body and now belonged to this one.

"Fuck!"

The word tore out with the last of his breath, leaving him open-mouthed against Juna’s shoulder while his chest refused to take the next one.

Vella held him through the next surge, keeping his injured arm from striking the ground while Juna supported his head against her shoulder.

His five available Rings trembled above the forearm, each turn scraping a new line of heat through the pathways beneath his skin.

The child’s voice came with the returned memory, her plain permission reaching him alongside the sight of the wedge she had put into the clone’s hand.

’She saw the door first.’

Her glance toward the doorway stayed painfully clear, returning between flashes of the wedge in his hand while he tried to drag air into his chest.

Vella pressed her hand against the strained pathway, her gold tightening around its flare as he jerked hard enough to scrape his heel over the paving.

"Stay with us," she said.

He tried to answer, losing the first breath before he could form anything clearer than a sound that made Juna tighten the support beneath his head.

Didi crouched close enough to keep the way around him guarded, her arm trembling before she braced its elbow against her raised knee.

Lucan stayed with Cessy at the wall, his hand firm beneath her elbow while she turned her head toward the sound Hajin could not stop making.

Ferra moved along the local fixtures, her fingers stopping over one forged piece as its strain drew a sharp line across her face.

She eased that connection with a careful turn of her hand, watching the tremor diminish before she shifted her weight toward the next fixture.

Hajin caught a glimpse of Ferra’s hand against the fixture, losing it again as his back arched against the hold keeping him off the stone.

The outer Sanctuary approach stopped taking the clone’s exposed connection, the actual refuge remaining closed to the attention that had followed the royal route toward it.

Aria kept the initial exposure check beside the dissolution record, holding the result for comparison when the delayed Ring completed its return.

Juna shifted her hand under Hajin’s jaw as another cry broke through, her thumb resting against his cheek while she kept his head supported.

He tried to turn his face away from her, shame arriving absurdly through the pain when he heard the raw sound of his own voice.

"Here," Juna said, "keep your head here."

He stopped trying to move it, letting her take its weight while Vella steadied the arm he could no longer keep still himself.

The thirty-second delay finished, the sixth Ring returning through a haze of smoke while the pathways receiving it remained as strained as the body beneath them.

Aria’s second exposure result appeared beside the first as the Ring settled, the two clear fields swimming together whenever Hajin tried to focus on them.

Hajin managed a breath long enough to look toward the passage, finding the corridor watch at the far turn with the child’s doorway beyond it.

The guard shifted at the far turn, an ordinary movement that brought the child’s glance through the doorway back to him with sudden clarity.

"Go back," he whispered, "that’s what she said."

Juna’s expression changed at the words, the understanding reaching her before he could explain the wedge or the exact gap the girl had chosen.

"Then you came back."

He nodded against the support beneath his head, the movement catching halfway through as another hot pulse drove his breath out between his teeth.

Sava wrote Go back beside the return record, her pen moving firmly through the two words before she set the page where Hajin could see it.

The Rings continued smoking after their return, their pale haze drifting past Vella’s hands while she held him through another series of uneven breaths.

Thirty seconds later, Aria completed the third check, confirming the refuge remained unexposed after dissolution, Ring return, and the settling of the immediate backlash.

"All three clear," Aria said.

He stared at the notices until the words separated again, dragging enough air into his chest to let his shoulders settle beneath Vella’s hands.

A pressure shifted beneath the square, drawing Didi’s attention toward the five approaches that had waited behind the court’s more distant interest.

The sound came from lower down than the closed scar, a strained movement beneath the paving that made Ferra lift her head from the fixture.

[ Lesser cores: Five crossing ]

[ True death upon destruction: Confirmed ]

"Five lesser cores crossing," Aria read at his gesture, "true death confirmed for each of the five upon destruction."

Cessy looked toward the approaches, her hand still held near the division Vella had stopped from taking her core apart.

"When they die here, nothing below receives them back."

Hajin followed her gaze toward the five approaches, the pressure beneath the paving giving the words a shape he could feel against his heels.

He shifted against Vella’s support, trying to lift his head before his legs offered any reason to believe standing would be a useful contribution.

Juna helped him see the square without letting the effort pull his injured arm free of the position keeping it steady.

The stored field lot sat unopened at the edge of his interface, its little inventory notice disappearing as he brought the five approaches into view.

Ferra marked the five approaching shapes on the slate, giving the waiting defenders something they could identify while his body continued paying for the guard it had sent home.

"Get me where I can see them."

"You’re already there," Juna answered.

Her hand stayed beneath his head while he checked the angle, the five marked approaches visible beyond her shoulder as the next movement strained beneath the square.

He let his weight settle back into the hands holding him, his right arm still smoking while the lesser cores forced their way toward their waiting targets.
