All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 555: Winter Pear Smoke

Cessy watched Rumi tuck the torn knot beneath her wrist wrap, the sight leaving an odd hollow feeling where the scarf had rested against her throat.

Her hand rose toward the missing cloth before the pull beneath her bandage stopped it, bringing her fingers back against the ache in her side.

The hooked creature lay broken beyond the mark that had carried her out, its reaching arm reduced to an awkward shape on the paving.

She could still feel the grip through the scarf, a phantom tug that made her shoulder tense whenever a chain scraped nearby.

Lucan stood beside her with one hand close to her elbow, his attention moving between her face and the three bodies still inside the square.

"Sit," he said.

"In a moment."

"You said that before your knee folded."

She looked down at the knee, finding the cloth scuffed where the stone had caught it during the short, ugly struggle beneath the hook.

’He will remember that every time I stand up now.’

The thought should have irritated her more than it did, the familiar sound of her brother keeping her upright in a way his hand could not.

Beyond him, Hajin pulled against the chain-holder’s approach from the ground, his right arm braced while Juna steadied the weight behind his shoulder.

His Rings still carried a faint haze, the sight making Cessy remember the sound he had made when the other body came home.

She had heard people scream beneath much cleaner ceilings, the memory arriving with a coldness that had nothing to do with Didi’s frost nearby.

Her fingers settled over the audit brand beneath the edge of her sleeve, finding the old pattern waiting against skin that belonged entirely to this side now.

The mark stirred at her touch, its familiar direction pointing toward a road that had once meant the end of a dangerous assignment.

’Home.’

She had used the word often enough to stop hearing what she meant by it, folding its comfort around things she preferred leaving unexamined.

Home had meant a place to arrive after carrying somebody else’s instructions through a hostile world, somewhere she could stop explaining why she knew the names of the doors.

She remembered her brother’s footsteps nearby, the smell of food she recognized before she saw it, the relief of putting down a report that somebody else would read.

The memory caught hardest on that last detail, its old comfort turning sour while the brand warmed beneath her fingers.

Lucan noticed the movement, his hand closing lightly around the cloth above her elbow before she could pull the sleeve farther back.

"Cessy."

She looked up at him, finding his gaze fixed on the hand covering the mark.

"I know."

"Then tell me what you’re doing."

Cessy drew the sleeve clear with her other hand, exposing the whole pattern while the scrape of Hajin’s Chain carried behind her brother’s voice.

The brand’s lines were worn into familiarity, their little turns as easy to follow as the shape of her own palm.

She had learned where each one led long before she started asking what waited for the person whose name a report placed beneath them.

"It still authorizes my return," she said, turning her wrist enough for him to see the warming lines, "they can keep using that permission while I keep wearing it."

Lucan’s eyes moved to the bandage at her side, his expression tightening before he looked back at the exposed brand.

"Your core?"

"Here, where you helped bring it."

He knew that already, but she understood why he wanted the answer while her hand rested over something she was about to destroy.

Vella moved closer at the change in their voices, her gold hovering near Cessy’s side until Cessy gave her a small nod.

The healer’s touch settled beside the bandage, warm enough to make the deeper ache stand out against the skin beneath it.

"Show me the part you’re burning."

Cessy traced the returning line with one fingertip, stopping before the outer edge where the route’s permission bent back toward her.

Vella followed the movement carefully, her other hand remaining near the division she had held together while the court watched them through the scar.

"Just that?"

"Just that."

The small exchange left Cessy’s throat tight, its plainness harder to answer than an accusation would have been while her brother watched.

Hajin looked toward her from the Chain’s braced position, his attention catching on the exposed mark before moving up to her face.

"What are you losing?"

She almost gave him the useful answer, a few neat words about authorization that would make the choice sound like removing a faulty part.

Instead she looked past him toward the place where the fifth fighter’s chain disappeared across the broken approach, its tug dragging at her wrist through the brand.

"The road I used when I was tired of being here."

Hajin’s fingers stayed closed around his Chain, the tension in his jaw changing as the next pull reached the arm Juna was supporting.

"Did you want to take it?"

"I wanted to know I could."

That was the unpleasant truth of it, small enough to say aloud while three retrieval fighters kept trying to gather them into a parcel.

She had wanted to come here first, wanted to see Hajin breathing before checking the wards, wanted her brother safely beside her after the crossing.

She had also wanted the door behind her to remain a door, its direction familiar enough that she could keep calling herself a visitor.

The mark warmed again beneath her fingertip, offering the same old direction while the people at its far end sent things with hooks to bring her back.

’I’m tired of protecting the way they reach me.’

"Big brother, I am not trying to go home."

She said it to Hajin before the practiced smile could come with the familiar address, leaving the words bare between them for once.

His gaze held hers through another scrape of the Chain, the silence making her feel more exposed than the uncovered brand beneath her hand.

Lucan’s grip loosened above her elbow, his fingers sliding away from the sleeve while he kept his body close enough to catch her.

Cessy pressed her own mana into the returning line, following the pattern inward until heat gathered beneath the first bend.

The brand resisted with a sharp pulse, its direction tugging toward the old road while she held her fingertip against the point she had chosen.

Vella’s gold tightened near her side, the steady contact giving Cessy somewhere to rest her breath when the heat spread across the mark.

She kept following the authorization through its familiar turns, each one burning out beneath her hand with a pain that made her teeth close hard.

The last curve took longer than the others, clinging beneath her fingers until she could smell the smoke rising between her wrist and her face.

Winter pears came back to her in that smoke, sweet and cold enough to stop her breath while the final line blackened.

’Of all the things to keep.’

She remembered the feel of one in her hand more clearly than any road, its cool skin yielding beneath her thumb before the first bite.

The scent thinned as the returning line burned through, leaving her staring at the scar where its last familiar turn had been.

[ Foreign recovery authority: Severed ]

[ Return route: Irrecoverable ]

Hajin moved the fields where they could all read them, his voice carrying the two results while Cessy kept her hand open beneath the smoke.

"Foreign recovery authority severed, return route irrecoverable."

Lucan watched the second line until she turned her wrist down, the scent of winter pears lingering between them after the last smoke had faded.

He did not reach for his own authorization, keeping his hand beside hers while Vella checked the pulse near the freshly burned skin.

Cessy found that she was waiting for somebody to tell her what she had become, the empty place beneath that expectation making her feel suddenly foolish.

Hajin shifted against the low stone behind him with Juna’s help, getting his back supported before she rose from her crouch beside the Chain.

"I’m working on the greeting," he said.

Cessy looked at him, her mouth almost finding its usual smile before the ache in her wrist spoiled the attempt.

"Something flattering would be welcome."

"I’ve got a dangerous fugitive standing inside my defensive line."

She let the sentence settle, feeling the word inside catch more firmly than anything he might have called her instead.

"That needs practice."

"It was the practiced version."

The laugh hurt her side enough that she stopped it with her hand, Lucan making a quiet, irritated sound beside her as she tried to breathe again.

Juna reached her shoulder after two careful steps around the held Chain, her fingers settling gently through the cloth with her claws sheathed.

Cessy looked at the hand before looking at her face, finding a steadiness there that made the simple touch difficult to joke about.

"Stay behind this line while we finish," Juna said.

She shifted her foot to widen the standing space beside the stone, giving Cessy room to move back without turning her away from the square.

At the passage doorway, Ash lifted a corner of his blanket, holding the little fold toward her while the Watcher kept her arm across his shoulders.

Cessy took one ordinary step closer to the doorway before reaching for it, stopping within his mother’s sheltering reach as the boy put the cloth into her hand.

The blanket was warm from where he had been gripping it, its soft edge catching against the tender patch beside her burned mark.

"Thank you, Ash, this is a very good corner."

"I know."

Ash nodded once, watching her hold the corner while the rest of the blanket stayed gathered against his chest.

Cessy glanced back at Lucan, finding him looking at the place where her return line had ended before his hand moved toward the folded report beneath his coat.
