Chapter 536: Chapter 346: Never Mind Me, Are You Blameless?
Li Wei was, without a doubt, a good man.
In Jason Miller’s mind, Li Wei could even be called the best rich man in all of Hollywood.
That $100,000 USD check from last month had been like a brick falling from the sky. It hadn’t just stunned him; it had shored up his life, which had been on the verge of collapse.
The $67,700 USD he took home after taxes paid off the credit card debt that was about to eat him alive with its compounding interest. The heating bill, water bill, Jack’s summer camp registration fee, the garage door spring, the fence bill—they were all paid.
While the remaining money wasn’t enough for his family of three to live extravagantly, it was a blessing from God.
Jason Miller brushed his teeth, looking in the mirror. As he thought about it, he felt he would willingly take a bullet for Li Wei.
Hmm... He spat out a mouthful of foam.
’Well, not in any vital organs. If I died, what would happen to my wife and son? The nigger next door has complimented Megan’s looks and figure to my face several times, and Jack is still so young.’
’...My arms and legs are probably out, too. I need them to drive, work, and support my family.’
He wiped his mouth and hung the towel back on the rack. ’Forget it. I’ll just wish Mr. Li Wei great fortune and a safe life. No more thinking about taking bullets.’
As he walked past the closet, Jason Miller’s hand brushed against the shelf inside. The Rolex Submariner Li Wei had given him was still lying there.
He still hadn’t dared to tell Megan why Li Wei had given him a watch worth $15,000 USD.
Megan would never believe it. People like Li Wei were just too rare in Hollywood—so rare you probably couldn’t find a plot that over-the-top even in the movies.
In Hollywood, money was blatantly everything. She’d seen neighbors deal drugs to pay the mortgage, and the hub of the adult film industry was just three miles from their house.
If Megan saw Jason come home with a Rolex, her first reaction would definitely be to ask if he’d started dealing drugs, just like Walter White in *Breaking Bad*.
But Mr. Li Wei really didn’t seem to want anything from him in return.
The thought filled Jason with a deep sense of gratitude toward Li Wei.
’If a real emergency came up, I guess I wouldn’t be totally against taking a bullet for Li Wei... as long as it wasn’t life-threatening.’
Jason pulled an ironed, light-blue shirt from the closet. He had just slid one arm into a sleeve when he heard Megan stir and roll over behind him.
"Jason?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes. "What time is it?"
"A little after six," Jason said, trying to be quiet as he buttoned his shirt. "You can keep sleeping."
"Are you working today?" Megan pushed herself up, her hair a messy tangle on one side of her face. "Do you want something to eat? We still have eggs and bacon in the fridge."
Their relationship had actually improved quite a bit lately. For a couple married as long as they had been, as long as money wasn’t the problem, then basically nothing was a problem.
"I’ll just grab a quick bite," Jason said, tucking his shirt into his waistband. "I have to head out in a bit. I’m picking up two cars for Li Wei, and then I need to introduce him to Daniel."
"Li Wei’s buying a house and cars here?" Megan was fully awake now. "Well, that makes sense... he’s here to shoot a movie, and he’s investing so much in Hollywood."
"You’ve heard about it?" Jason asked without turning around.
"It’s all over the news," Megan said, lying on her side as she watched Jason get dressed. "For the past two days, all of Hollywood has been buzzing with news about him."
Jason Miller smiled.
"Jason," Megan said, her eyes fixed on him. "Have you ever thought about... asking Li Wei for a job?"
"His investments in Hollywood are huge," she continued, almost to herself. "How many hundreds of millions was it? A project that big has to have someone keeping an eye on things, right? Plus, you’ve been in Hollywood for so many years and know so many people. You’ve dealt with Warner, Paramount, Netflix... all of them."
Jason was truly tempted. It wasn’t the first time the thought had crossed his mind.
He’d been thinking about it ever since Li Wei gave him that check. After nearly ten years at NBC, he was still just a junior associate producer.
The six major Hollywood studios, Netflix, Amazon... he knew people everywhere. Locations, filming permits, security, paparazzi, VIP access—he could handle all of it in his sleep.
But after a two-second silence, he turned and kissed Megan on the forehead.
"I know what you’re saying," he said, sitting by the window. "But you know I’m about to hit my ten-year mark at NBC."
"But NBC clearly doesn’t care about you. You’re on the fringes there," Megan said with a shrug. "You spend half your time with Li Wei, and your manager hasn’t even given you any trouble for it."
"Well..." Jason Miller hesitated. "But it has been ten years. I should be due for a move up from my associate producer spot."
Megan looked at Jason but didn’t press the issue.
"Well, happy tenth anniversary in advance, then," she said. "We should go out and celebrate when it happens. What do you think?"
Jason’s mouth twitched.
’Going out to celebrate... for the three of us, with drinks and a tip, that’s at least $250 USD.’
’If we’re just celebrating, burgers from Five Guys or In-N-Out aren’t bad. Thirty bucks would cover it.’
"We’ll see when the time comes," Jason said, getting to his feet. "I’m heading out."
"Are you sure you don’t want me to fry you an egg?"
"No, I’m in a rush."
"Be careful." Megan hummed in acknowledgment and fell back onto her pillow.
Jason grabbed his Camry keys and walked out the door.
...
Just after 9:00 AM, Jason Miller followed the address sent by Chen Haisheng and arrived at an ultra-luxury car storage and management center in Beverly Hills.
