Chapter 556: Chapter 363: Li Wei is Really a Good Kid!
In the darkness, Jason Miller couldn’t see a thing, but he could hear and feel.
First, he felt a sudden coolness on his face. The short, chubby white man whose hand had been pressing against it suddenly flew backward and crashed into the wall.
Then came the sound of clashing metal. A folding table was overturned, tumbling twice on the ground.
"What... what is that?"
The tattooed man behind Jason released his grip on Jason’s hands. Pulling a handgun and a dagger from his waist, he flailed one hand wildly while firing blindly into the air with the other.
"Quit playing games! Come out!"
Immediately after, he let out a miserable shriek. The dagger and handgun clattered to the ground.
The second tattooed man bolted toward the warehouse door in the pitch black. Just as the first sliver of starlight filtered in, he suddenly screamed. He was smashed against the wall by a tremendous Power, leaving it unknown whether he was dead or alive.
In less than five seconds, the warehouse fell completely silent. The only sounds left were Jason Miller’s own breathing and the night wind blowing in through the broken windows near the roof.
Sitting in the chair with his hands bound behind his back, Jason trembled uncontrollably.
By the faint light spilling in from the doorway, Jason could barely make out the culprit who had nearly stabbed a screwdriver into his eye. The man was now crumpled in a corner, his fate uncertain. The other two thugs weren’t in any better shape.
Regardless of what had happened, it seemed someone had saved him.
"Hello?" he called out tentatively. "Is anyone there? Can you untie me?"
No one answered. There was only darkness.
Jason forced himself to calm down. He tipped the chair over, taking it with him as he crashed heavily to the ground. A muffled grunt escaped his lips upon impact.
Relying on his memory, Jason wriggled across the floor like an earthworm, groping around until he found the dagger the thug had dropped earlier.
He carefully gripped the dagger in reverse, accidentally slicing a small gash on the back of his hand in the process.
After all, NBC’s onboarding training hadn’t covered how to use a dagger to slice through zip ties in a survival situation.
"HISS..." Jason drew a sharp breath. Gritting his teeth, he maintained his grip on the dagger and slowly sawed at the zip ties.
About ten seconds later, the zip ties snapped.
Jason stripped off his shirt and wrapped it around the back of his hand, stumbling for a moment before steadying himself.
He stumbled out of the warehouse. Looking around, he found himself surrounded by low corrugated iron warehouses and empty lots parked with trucks.
The streetlights were sparse, and the overpass of Interstate 710 was visible in the distance.
"Probably somewhere in Vernon or South Gate..." Jason muttered as he stood by the road, covered in dust, blood still seeping from the back of his head and hand.
He glanced at the box truck nearby and hesitated. Fear kept him from heading back into the warehouse to search their bodies for the keys. Instead, he bolted without looking back.
He ran down the gravel road for about three minutes until he spotted a 24-hour gas station.
After a lengthy explanation, he finally managed to borrow a phone from the Indian convenience store clerk.
Jason Miller’s first instinct was to call Li Wei.
"Hello?" Li Wei’s voice came through. It sounded like he was driving, and the sounds of a McDonald’s drive-thru could be heard in the background. "Who is this?"
"Mr. Li Wei, it’s me," Jason gulped. "It’s Jason Miller."
"Jason." A hint of surprise colored Li Wei’s tone. "Why are you using a different number?"
"I was looking into the prop supplier... Then, my phone was taken, and I was kidnapped." Jason took a deep breath. "Mr. Li Wei, something happened."
"Calm down first," Li Wei said. "Are you safe right now?"
"Probably... safe? I don’t know, sir," Jason replied. "I was taken to a warehouse. They were going to gouge out one of my eyes, and then the lights went out... There were screams. Someone subdued them, and I escaped."
Li Wei sighed. "I’m sorry you had to go through that. You were investigating the prop supplier for me?"
"Yes," Jason swallowed hard. "I found out—"
"It’s okay," Li Wei interrupted. "It won’t be too late to tell me when you get the chance. Call 911 right now and report exactly what happened. Don’t worry about the rest."
"Mr. Li Wei, I’m not really worried about myself," Jason Miller hesitated. "I’m worried about my family. They... they have my address..."
"It’s fine. I’ll make arrangements for that," Li Wei assured him. "Rest easy."
"Understood." Listening to Li Wei’s voice, Jason inexplicably felt his emotions steadily calm down.
Li Wei’s presence acted like a steadfast anchor, giving him such an immense sense of security that his very first choice had been to call Li Wei instead of the police.
"You did great today," Li Wei said. "Go home and rest for a couple of days."
After hanging up, Jason dialed 911 and waited for the police to arrive.
Meanwhile, sitting in the driver’s seat of his Cadillac Escalade, Li Wei picked up his McDonald’s Hamburg combo meal and checked his quest panel while driving home.

Li Wei pondered for a moment before first calling Mamenov, the manager of the private defense company.
He used company funds to purchase a six-month remote bodyguard service for Jason Miller and his family.
This long-term cooperation project was originally suggested by Anya. For a flat monthly fee of 550,000 USD, it provided remote, traceless bodyguard services for a quota of up to ten people.
Anya and Elizabeth had their own independent security teams. Li Wei had always covered Don Quixote and Jin Heon under this service; they just never knew it themselves.
