Chapter 562: Chapter 368: Li Wei: Sorry, I’m a Cheater
"Why didn’t you tell me sooner?" Anya tossed her suitcase to Li Wei, looking quite annoyed. "Why didn’t you say anything when I was boarding the plane?"
Li Wei tossed Anya’s suitcase into the trunk of the Cadillac Escalade. Hearing her complaints, he shrugged without a word and handed her the flowers from the trunk. Anya took the large bouquet, huffed, and got into the car.
"Let’s talk on the way," Li Wei said. "It’s not too late to pick up some gifts for Chief Robert Flynn and his family on the road."
"This is our first time visiting their home," Anya grumbled, still slightly furious. "How can we just buy something randomly before showing up? First impressions are crucial! After all, we’re building our careers in Los Angeles, so we need to stay on his good side," she chattered. "You’re the one who told me that."
"True." Li Wei got in the car and thought for a moment. "So, what do you think we should buy?"
The Cadillac Escalade left the private terminal and headed toward the Flynns’ home.
"Let me think," Anya said, pressing her fingers against her forehead. "What’s his wife’s name? How old is she?"
"Why are you pressing your forehead?" Li Wei shot her a look.
"I just got a skincare treatment, so I can’t frown," Anya replied. "Otherwise, it’ll all go to waste... Don’t try to change the subject. How old is his wife? What’s her name? Does she have any religious beliefs?"
"I didn’t ask."
"How old is his son? What did he do before?"
"No idea."
"Then what does Robert Flynn like to do in his spare time?"
"I don’t know."
Anya gave a weak, sarcastic chuckle. "So we’re just going over for a casual meal?"
"What else would it be?" Li Wei glanced at her. "I think his attitude toward me has been pretty good. What if he just really likes me?"
Li Wei fell silent and checked [Adaptability (Bronze)]. The cooldown had refreshed; it was ready to be activated at any time. He was sure the man’s attitude would definitely be quite good.
"Let me give Auntie Kaja a call," Anya mused, pulling out her phone. "Let’s see if she can suggest a foolproof gift." She scolded Li Wei as she dialed. "Ugh, the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department has a lot of power. You’re going to be filming in Hollywood now, so it never hurts to put in a little extra effort to stay on his good side.
"Hello, Auntie Kaja," she continued. "Yes, it’s like this. I need to look into someone... Robert Flynn. Li Wei and I are visiting his house as guests, and I want to know what kind of gift would be appropriate..."
"Mhm, okay." She hung up the phone and turned to Li Wei. "Auntie Kaja said she’ll look up Robert Flynn’s information and get back to us within an hour."
"Why are you acting like we’re facing a formidable enemy?" Li Wei asked as he drove. "By the way, I haven’t asked yet—how was your trip to Moscow? Did everything go smoothly?"
"It was okay." Anya kicked off her shoes and curled up in the passenger seat, bringing up her front-facing camera to check her hair and makeup. "I was terrified before I went, but it was fine once I landed and saw my dad." She glanced at Li Wei as she spoke. "You know what? I signed more than ten asset transfer agreements this time. I was shocked. Turns out, my dad bought so many things.
"Four wineries in France, a castle in Italy, apartments in Monaco and London." She counted on her fingers. "Oh, right, almost forgot—an island in Greece. I didn’t even know my family owned an island in Greece.
"There’s also a villa in Dubai, shares in a ski resort in Switzerland, three office buildings in Moscow, a boutique hotel in Saint Petersburg, a logistics company in the United Arab Emirates..."
Anya rattled off a long list before finally stopping.
"Should I be nicer to you?" Li Wei joked while driving. "If I offend you, will I be chopped into mincemeat the second I set foot in Europe?"
"Cut it out." Anya laughed and gave him a hard pinch. "Can’t you do a little self-reflection and just try not to make me mad?"
Just as they were talking, Anya’s phone rang.
"Auntie Kaja~" She picked up immediately. "Did you find anything?"
Anya listened for a while, occasionally nodding and murmuring in agreement. After hanging up, she crossed her arms and stared at Li Wei, her little face pulled taut.
"I heard what Kaja just said." Li Wei pointed at his ear.
Anya playfully punched him. "Can’t you ask me?" she demanded. "Ask me again."
"What should we buy?" Li Wei asked.
"We should bring a bottle of mid-to-high-end whiskey for Flynn. Nothing too expensive, or it’ll put pressure on them; something around 200 USD will do." Anya repeated Kaja’s instructions. "Bring his wife, Margaret, a bouquet of flowers and a box of handmade chocolates. Don’t pick white flowers."
Li Wei redirected the navigation to a flower shop and turned off at the intersection.
Flynn’s home was located on a quiet residential street in Pasadena.
Unlike the mansion one might imagine, it was a cozy, typical California ranch-style house. A Ford F-150 and a navy blue Volvo were parked in the driveway.
"It looks like a very warm family." Anya hopped out of the car, holding the flowers in one hand and a shopping bag in the other, and glanced at the house. "Let’s go."
The doorbell rang, and a slightly plump, middle-aged woman with a beaming smile opened the door.
"Hello, hello!" she greeted them warmly. "You must be Li Wei and Anna, right? Robert has been talking about you non-stop—please, come in!"
"Just call me Anya; that’s what my family and friends call me, Mrs. Flynn," Anya said, handing over the flowers and chocolates. "Thank you for the invitation. These are for you. I hope you like them."
