Seeing the small dog’s bleeding wounds, Hou Yizhen’s eyes became cold as he gazed at the group of high school boys who were clearly skipping classes.

The boys were initially acting all strong and laughing loudly when they threw the stones, but when they saw the group of men who clearly came from the underworld society, their faces paled and they stepped back in fear.

Especially when the man in the lead, almost as tall as two meters, with muscles bulging on his chest and arms, dark skin, and a dragon tattoo on his neck, said to the men, "Teach them a lesson. Since they like to hurt animals so much, then let them experience it too."

"Yes, boss!"

Hou Yizhen was not a merciful person.

All his loyalty, care, and tolerance were limited to his friends and subordinates, and now Lin Feng.

He came from a world where he had to kill his fellow children in order to survive in a criminal gang. If he was still the same person back then, he would have not hesitated and kill off these people without much thought.

But Hou Yizhen now had a surname, he now had responsibilities, and people he had to protect.

He could no longer be as ruthless as he once did.

But not killing was his limit, he could still break a few bones.

The subordinates’ faces looked grim as if they were about to kill someone, and they flexed their knuckles and stretched their necks while slowly walking.

However–

’What are these idiots doing, run, you little bastards!’

’Are these kids really looking to die?’

’Shit, boss is watching behind us, think of a way!’

Someone coughed, then grinned widely. There was a large scar on the man’s cheeks.

"What a coincidence. We were out of toys to play with, the last one died so soon. It’s a little hard to meet the boss’ requirements."

"Yeah. Where can you find young people who like to beat up animals and skip classes in broad daylight nowadays? Especially when most students are preparing for the college entrance exams in three months."

"How lucky, we found some here, fufufu."

"Boss has a strange taste. He especially likes to torture young people who likes to bully small animals because it’s more fun that way... fufufu..."

"Boys, blame yourself for doing this thing, now you’re about to fall into our hands!"

The boys kept retreating while trembling, scrambling back while begging.

"I’m sorry, I actually don’t like to do it!"

"It’s this guy, you take him!" Someone pushed a boy out.

The boy was terrified. "No, they like to hit animals more! This guy and that guy, I saw them beat up an old stray dog to death!"

"No, this one is worse! He actually liked to poison cats, he killed more than ten of them already!"

The high school boys were in tears while pushing each other out, spilling all their crimes one by one.

"..."

"..."

"These brats deserve to get beaten up. There’s no surveillance here."

"Go beat them up!"

In the narrow alley that people avoided due to the constant presence of the bad elements of rebellious high school students, screams of pain and begging filled the air.

It was only a few minutes later that the crying stopped and they were beaten black and blue, only weakly groaning, did the subordinates stop.

"Fuck. These brats, if we’re not in Beijing..." Someone still could not help but curse at the heartless little things.

Someone sniffled, causing the others to look at him. "Brother, why are you crying? Do you actually feel sorry for these bastards?"

The person shook his head, sniffling in tears. "Damn, I just remembered my Cola. If she ever accidentally strayed out of home, what if she gets beaten up like this? My Cola!"

"My Beatrice!"

"My Imperial Lordship!"

These men also had pets of their own, so seeing animals being cruelly abused hit them hard. They had intended to give mercy, but to think these boys actually were so evil.

Back in the car, Hou Yizhen sat on the backseat with the small dog trembling beside him. He was not surprised when he heard his subordinates’ report.

He had seen the familiar twisted cruelty in those high schooler’s eyes. In fact, he could tell that they had done much worse.

If those brat’s families didn’t do anything about it, those high schoolers would only become a scum of the society.

But that was none of Hou Yizhen’s business.

"Drop by the vet’s clinic."

Later, when Hou Yizhen stood inside the clinic and saw other heavily wounded stray animals, his thick brows furrowed deeper.

"These are all strays?"

The veterinarian nodded in exhaustion. "Yes. I really don’t want to do this, but our clinic is small and out of capacity. I can only send the animals that are not in extremely dire situations to an animal shelter."

Animal shelter.

Hou Yizhen did not know what animal shelters in this country were like, but in the areas he had been to during his mercenary days, animal shelters were literally no different from a pig pen. Animals sent there were soon either killed, eaten, or used for gambling fights.

Some were even especially used for hunting, where the strays were sent out and hunted, whether it’s for fun or for practicing shooting.

"What is an animal shelter like?"

"It’s not far from here. Do you want to see?"

The man nodded.

Soon, Hou Yizhen found himself standing in an overcrowded animal shelter. The shelter was not the pigpen he knew, nor did it engage in the cruel activities he knew.

But the small cages limited the animals’ freedom due to overcrowding. In the open areas outside of the cage, it was a dog eat dog place, where the strong led the pack, and the weak were inevitably bullied.

Hou Yizhen slowly looked down at the small dog in the veterinarian’s arms, which was now cleaned up and bandaged all over.

One of its legs was broken, and there were other wounds on its body. But overall, the wounds were not life threatening, so the vet clinic which no longer had a spare area could only put the small dog inside a small cage in the shelter.

Once the small dog recovered, it would then be moved to the open space to give way to other new arrivals.

Hou Yizhen fell silent, before finally deciding: "I want to build an animal shelter. What are the procedures?"

Right now, he could only bring in the helpless animals under his care.

But in the future, he would also bring Lin Feng under his wing, protecting him from wind and rain.
