Chapter 706: Chapter 6: Search Plan

The Labrador turned its head and looked at Tian Kui, bewildered.

Iron-Clad Gold sidled up.

’Boss, should we take him?’

’This wire fence is nothing. We could slip right through.’

Da Mei got all worked up, running over to Tian Kui and meowing, its big eyes full of excitement.

Tian Kui bared his teeth at Iron-Clad Gold, then turned and barked a few times at his pack.

’Have you all forgotten what Master said? We’re just here to say hello. Don’t start trouble, but don’t run from it, either.’

’Let’s go.’

Tian Kui barked once and turned to leave.

He glanced back one last time in the direction where Proteus had disappeared.

’The local gang isn’t very polite.’

A fight didn’t break out, and Shen Xin was completely unaware of what had happened.

Back at the police station, the pleasantries were over. Shen Xin requested to see the psychological profile of the suspect that the team had put together.

He decided to skip the case files for now.

With fifteen victims, the files would probably fill an entire room.

Shen Xin was quite curious to see what the suspect looked like in the eyes of these professional criminal investigators.

Their BAU team was essentially the equivalent of a domestic criminal investigation expert unit.

The team was temporarily set up in a break room at the police station. Griffin handed him a folder.

It wasn’t thick, but it wasn’t thin either—about ten pages or so.

Shen Xin had seen American TV shows. His strongest impression was how, after an investigation, the team would gather all the local police, and then the members would take turns chiming in, detailing the suspect’s race and age.

They could even tell you he used to wet the bed as a child, was impotent, lived alone, and what kind of job he had.

Then the local police would launch a manhunt, and voilà, the killer they found would be exactly as described.

But when he actually opened the psychological profile, Shen Xin slowly put it down and shot a pleading look at Ding Yuwei beside him.

It was all in English. He couldn’t understand it.

It wasn’t that he didn’t know any English at all. Back in the police academy, Shen Xin had at least passed his basic English exams.

But the standard of that test was, well, nothing special.

Shen Xin definitely knew simple, everyday phrases, but a quick glance showed him page after page of professional jargon with over a dozen letters per word. How was he supposed to understand any of that?

Ding Yuwei leaned over for a look and was stumped as well.

They hadn’t brought a translator on this trip, figuring Ding Yuwei’s English was good enough for daily conversation.

She pointed to a technical term that must have had over twenty letters and a hyphen in the middle, shaking her head to show she didn’t understand it either.

It was Philips, the academic of the group, who noticed Shen Xin’s awkwardness. He immediately stepped forward, took the folder with a smile, and said in Chinese, "Shen, this is all pretty long-winded. Let me just summarize it for you."

"Male, 35 to 50 years old, because his crimes span a long period. Lives alone, parents are divorced, and he was abused by his mother as a child. This is because his targets have always been women, with no specific preference.

"It’s possible his mother was the only female figure in his life as he was growing up. He’s turned his mother into a symbol, and consequently, he loathes all women.

"High intelligence, severe schizophrenia and paranoia. Shen, you have to understand, a high-IQ schizophrenic can appear perfectly normal on the outside. The fact that he can independently select and approach his targets proves he has no trouble communicating with ordinary people. He might even be good at it.

"An extreme need for control, which likely stems from being overly controlled by his mother as a child. His entire criminal process is about controlling the victim.

"He likely has a history of torturing animals as a child. When subjected to his mother’s perverse control with no other outlet, individuals like this often take out their frustrations on animals weaker than themselves.

"In the eyes of an adult, this is seen as rebellious behavior, which only leads to more severe control and abuse, creating a vicious cycle that deepens their obsession with inflicting pain.

"In the ’09 case, we believe the victim may have been on the run in the forest for over twelve hours before finally being killed. This indicates the killer thoroughly enjoys the entire process of the hunt.

"There’s another piece of evidence. In cases before ’08, he would rape his victims. But after that, simple assault was no longer enough to satisfy him. The desperate flight of his prey, the control over his target’s life—that’s what excites him more now.

"He has experience and a background in related work, like farming or hunting, and he’s skilled at training animals. You have to realize, he’s been committing these crimes for fifteen years, maybe even longer. If it were the same dog all this time, it probably wouldn’t have lived this long, and its aggression would have waned with age.

"He’s handsome, or rather, he appears trustworthy, making it easy for him to gain the confidence of strangers.

"He has a low level of formal education but is a strong self-learner. In his daily life and at work, he’s a very capable person who easily earns the recognition and praise of others.

"He should enjoy this process of being noticed and praised, as it’s something that was missing from his upbringing.

"However, his social status is low. He feels his personal abilities don’t match his achievements, which leads to intense dissatisfaction and fuels his criminal impulses.

"He has a vehicle, whether it’s a motorcycle or a car, and a relatively stable residence. We wouldn’t be surprised if he’s married when we find him.

"Shen, we believe that during the three years his crimes stopped, it wasn’t necessarily because he got old and his criminal capabilities declined, causing him to give up crime for good.

"It’s also not because he ran into some unforeseen situation, like being jailed for something else. He’s a high-IQ criminal with extremely strong counter-surveillance skills and is very good at hiding himself. He wouldn’t get himself involved in a stupid crime."
