Chapter 712: Chapter 9: Using Animals to Find Animals
Tian Kui was weighing the pros and cons like a human.
The coyotes’ thinking, however, was far simpler and more brutal. Their opponents were about the same size as them, and some were even larger.
And there were more of them.
In the wild, this was the fundamental rule of survival.
Fighting Tian Kui and his pack over a single piece of prey just wasn’t worth it.
The lead coyote’s eyes narrowed. It was preparing to retreat.
But before it could give the order, the unexpected happened.
First, the lynx that had been cowering and panting in a rock crevice finally caught its breath. It prepared to break out of the encirclement.
It tensed, about to bolt.
It aimed for the coyotes’ side, since there were fewer of them.
The moment it moved, only Da Mei was quick enough to react. She shot out in a flash to block its path.
They had already cornered the lynx; there was no way they were going to let it escape so easily.
But Da Mei’s move set off a chain reaction.
A nearby coyote thought Da Mei was charging at it and tensed, preparing to pounce.
The moment the coyote flinched, the wolf-dog closest to it—one of Tian Kui’s pack—instantly reacted.
In the wolf-dog’s eyes, this was a signal: the enemy was attacking, and their target was Da Mei.
Everyone knew that Da Mei was Shen Xin’s favorite. Not only were they forbidden from harming her, they were supposed to protect her.
So without waiting for a command from Tian Kui, the wolf-dog charged.
He didn’t see a problem with it. After all, their side had the advantage.
It was just like his days as a stray fighting for territory: as long as you had the numbers, you fought.
In a flash, the lynx retreated back into the crevice, and the wolf-dog was already pouncing on the coyote.
By the time Tian Kui could react, the two packs had already descended into a chaotic brawl.
’Well, so much for thinking it over.’
Tian Kui charged in.
They might have "wolf" in their name, but these were no true wolves.
In a one-on-one fight, Tian Kui was confident that none of his pack would fear a single coyote.
Combined with their numerical advantage, the battle ended in a decisive victory for Tian Kui’s side.
Their opponents were wild animals; there was no concept of holding back.
So, once the fight began, Tian Kui immediately adjusted his strategy and fought to kill.
A few moments later, of the five coyotes, one fled in a panic. Another lay on the ground, whining pitifully, having been severely wounded by Tian Kui’s bite.
The other two were also wounded to varying degrees.
All that was left was their leader, whose fighting prowess was slightly greater.
But it was no use. It was now surrounded, with Tian Kui leading the charge. Covered in wounds, it bared its fangs in a ferocious display.
But it was all just a bluff.
Tian Kui and his packmates had also suffered some injuries, but none were serious.
With a low growl, Tian Kui saw his chance and pounced again, sending him and the coyote leader tumbling together among the rocks.
Agonized yelps filled the air.
In the end, Tian Kui took a bite to his leg, but he managed to tear out the coyote’s throat.
The alpha coyote collapsed, its breath coming in ragged gasps as the life slowly faded from its eyes.
With that, the battle was well and truly over.
Looking at the carnage, Tian Kui finally had a moment to consider the consequences.
’This is not going to be easy to explain.’
Shen Xin had specifically warned them not to harm the local wildlife indiscriminately.
’And now? Two are half-dead, and the other two are likely not much better off.’
For a wild animal, getting injured and losing the ability to hunt meant only one thing.
Tian Kui’s first instinct was to hide it from Shen Xin.
The problem was...
Tian Kui glanced back. Every single one of his packmates was injured. ’There’s no hiding this.’
The lynx tried to make a run for it, but Tian Kui swiftly pounced to block its path.
’This is all your fault.’
’No, wait. It’s because of Da Mei.’
Tian Kui turned and let out a few frustrated barks at Da Mei.
’You were the first one to charge in, but once the fighting started, you were also the first one to run away.’
All his packmates were wounded, but Da Mei was still as pristine as ever.
Da Mei, as if understanding his unspoken accusation, simply meowed and turned her head away.
Her posture seemed to say, ’My fault?’
’If you’re going to blame someone, blame the lynx. If it hadn’t tried to bully me, I wouldn’t have gone after it.’
With that thought, Da Mei pounced on the lynx.
The poor creature was already terrified and could only hiss threateningly.
Da Mei wasn’t scared at all and swatted the lynx on the head repeatedly. ’That’s what you get for bullying me!’
With Tian Kui watching menacingly from the side, the lynx didn’t dare to fight back. It just cowered, letting Da Mei have her way.
The wolf-dog sidled up to Tian Kui.
His body language clearly asked, ’Boss, what do we do now?’
Tian Kui had half a mind to snap at him. ’You seemed pretty tough when you were charging in earlier.’
After a moment’s thought, Tian Kui realized there was no hiding this.
It was impossible.
That meant they had to notify Shen Xin and let him handle the mess.
The problem was, running back would take too long. With that thought, Tian Kui immediately ran to an open spot and began tracing a figure-eight pattern on the ground.
It was an emergency signal.
Their collars were equipped with GPS, and if one detected a figure-eight pattern, it would automatically send an alert to Shen Xin, signaling an emergency and a request for help.
Every police dog, and even the police birds, had been specifically trained in this maneuver.
It was a precaution for exactly this kind of emergency.
「Back in Monteiro Town.」
Shen Xin was watching Teddy and the others work when a warning suddenly popped up on his software.
He glanced at it, and his expression changed.
It was Tian Kui.
He quickly pulled up the locations of all the police dogs and noticed that nine of them, including Tian Kui, were located over ten kilometers away, near the Murdoch Mountain Range.
None of them were wearing their camera helmets, so he couldn’t remotely activate the video feed to see what was happening.
But an active alert meant something was wrong.
At that thought, Shen Xin didn’t dare delay. He grabbed the vet and set off immediately.
He floored it, arriving at the destination in under twenty minutes.
When he arrived, the alpha coyote still hadn’t drawn its last breath.
