Chapter 715: Chapter 10: Coyote: I Think I Saw My Great-Grandma
Although Tian Kui and the other dogs no longer had a mission, they still relocated with Shen Xin and the team to Deriggs, a small town on the border of Idaho and Wyoming.
Of course, since they didn’t have to work, they spent their days wandering around the camp, utterly bored.
Tian Kui wasn’t like a cat, who patrols its territory out of boredom.
Most of his day was spent finding a high spot with a clear view of where Shen Xin would emerge, and then napping.
Even his libido had waned.
As police dogs with a certain standing, maintaining discipline within the pack was crucial.
Shen Xin had warned them long ago: no fooling around.
The last thing Shen Xin wanted was a few hundred dogs mixed together, breeding exponentially.
But he later found they were difficult to control.
So he did his best to manage the situation by separating the males and females.
And as the Dog King, Tian Kui naturally enjoyed the most adoration from the female dogs.
Every day, a few female dogs could be found loitering around Tian Kui.
But the bored Tian Kui had now lost interest in even that.
As he was lying there, he saw Shen Xin.
His eyes lit up, and he immediately raised his head.
What was even more exciting was that Shen Xin was heading right for him.
"Tian Kui, time to work." Shen Xin crooked a finger.
The words were like music to his ears. Tian Kui shot to his feet and bounded over, eager to know what Shen Xin wanted.
’Hadn’t he already sent out that winged bunch today? Why was he looking for me?’
Shen Xin ruffled the fur on his head and gave him an order, "Go gather your crew—all the ones who can really fight. Remember, I mean the *fighters*."
They had brought a hundred police dogs, and all of them had undergone training.
But the former strays were a motley crew. Furthermore, they were trained as drug-sniffing dogs, not guard dogs; their primary function was drug detection.
As a result, the criteria for breed selection had been very broad. Among the one hundred dogs were smaller, less-powerful females with little combat strength.
And there were quite a few of them.
Even then, they had already been carefully selected for their mobility before coming here.
Some of the dogs at Shen Xin’s base were Corgi-mixes with short legs that couldn’t even run fast.
Tian Kui’s eyes lit up.
’Gather the crew, the fighters!’
’Looks like we’re in for a fight.’
Tian Kui didn’t have Da Mei’s love for chaos, but with the fierce genes of a wolf in his blood, he still relished a good fight.
[Understood]
Tian Kui barked once, then turned and went to gather his crew.
Ding Yuwei came up and said softly, "Shen Xin, with us doing all this... don’t you think... how should I put it... that we’re putting in too much effort?"
Shen Xin had proposed a new plan: use animals to find another animal.
To quickly win them over, Shen Xin had chosen the path of subjugation.
The plan was to take Tian Kui and his pack of police dogs to hunt down local wildlife—not to hurt the animals, of course, but to subdue them.
Then, he would compel the wild animals to help them find the wolf-dog.
Ding Yuwei didn’t know if the plan would succeed.
She just felt they were putting in too much effort.
This was the FBI’s case, after all. Before coming abroad, she had told him they should just do their best. It would be great to make a discovery, but it was no big deal if they didn’t.
The FBI had been on this case for over a decade. They’d gone through who knows how many directors, and none of them were losing their minds over it.
Her main concern was the risk involved. Ding Yuwei was worried.
She wasn’t just worried about the people, but the animals as well.
What would happen if the police dogs they had worked so hard to train got injured during these hunts?
Ding Yuwei watched Shen Xin intently. She felt his old habit was flaring up again—his tendency to take risks just to solve a case.
And often, Shen Xin himself was completely unaware of it.
Predictably, Shen Xin said it was fine. He had planned everything, he insisted, and the risks were manageable.
"It’s not really a matter of putting in too much effort. We stumbled upon this case, after all, and it’s also for those Red Notice fugitives," Shen Xin added.
If we don’t help them find this wolf-dog, they won’t make good on their promise.
Ding Yuwei hesitated, then said no more. She would have to go with him, if only to keep an eye on him.
A short while later, Tian Kui had gathered all the fighters in his crew.
Shen Xin often used Tian Kui as an instructor during "combat" training, so Tian Kui knew exactly which members of his crew could fight.
Including himself, there were 37 dogs in total.
Every last one of them was large-boned and powerfully built.
"Let’s go."
Shen Xin called out and headed to a corner of the camp.
He was going to run a test first.
The support team traveled with the main group, so the four coyotes and one bobcat they had previously rescued had been brought along as well.
They had recovered quickly after a few days of treatment and were now being kept in enclosures at the camp.
Shen Xin planned to start with them.
After subduing them, he would release them back into the wild nearby.
It didn’t matter much anyway, as coyotes have a wide distribution range and can survive anywhere.
Most importantly, they could be considered the loiterers of the animal world, with an average territory of thirty to forty square kilometers.
They could go anywhere.
In the mountains, and even in towns, these creatures are so numerous they’re like stray dogs. They are extremely adaptable and can survive in human-inhabited areas.
To find the wolf-dog, Shen Xin needed animals with a large roaming range.
A wider range meant a higher chance they might know of the wolf-dog.
After considering all the local fauna and weighing his options, he had settled on coyotes.
From their current position, Grand Teton National Park was to the east.
To the northeast was Yellowstone National Park.
Yellowstone National Park was a key site for the gray wolf reintroduction program in the United States. Data suggested there were around 1,500 North American gray wolves in and around the park.
Their territory was even larger than a coyote’s, capable of covering hundreds of square kilometers.
