Chapter 347: Chapter 170: Bridge

Xu Mo took a deep breath and got to work.

He walked over to the first car and gave it a push, but it didn’t budge an inch. Xu Mo pushed harder, and the car began to move slowly.

"SCREECH—SCREECH—"

The tires screeched against the pavement as Xu Mo shoved the vehicle to the side, clearing a small patch of the bridge.

But the noise attracted trouble. Two zombies suddenly darted out from nearby, roaring as they lunged at Xu Mo. They were fast—Level 1 Agility Types.

Xu Mo didn’t panic. He had already sensed their approach. He sidestepped the first one’s lunge, smoothly plunging his Triangular Spike into its skull. Then, using the momentum, he spun around and finished off the second one.

After flicking the blood from his Triangular Spike, Xu Mo went back to pushing cars.

One car, two cars, three cars...

Every few cars he moved, more zombies would dart out from among the wreckage.

Xu Mo had no choice but to alternate between pushing cars and killing zombies.

As time went on, Xu Mo gradually figured out the pattern. There weren’t that many zombies on the bridge; most had probably wandered off elsewhere. The ones left were just stragglers, and they would rush over at the slightest sound.

Xu Mo decided to stop being so cautious. He strode forward, pushing any car that blocked his way and killing any zombie whose roar he heard. His Triangular Spike flashed out again and again, and the zombies fell one by one.

After clearing another stretch of road, something suddenly occurred to Xu Mo.

’Some of these cars should still have gas.’ He pried open a gas cap and dipped the tip of his Triangular Spike in. The result confirmed his suspicion.

Xu Mo’s eyes lit up. His own vehicle had enough fuel for now, but it was always good to have a reserve. ’Who knows how far it is to the next gas station?’

So, he started siphoning gas. Whenever he found a car that still had fuel, he stopped to take some.

While siphoning the gas, Xu Mo found other things as well.

Some of the cars still had supplies.

Some trunks held unexpired canned goods, others contained different kinds of food, and there were even medical supplies.

As Xu Mo’s gaze swept over the items, he grew puzzled. ’It looks like the cars on this bridge haven’t been looted.’

It stood to reason that after the apocalypse began, survivors would be searching everywhere for supplies. This bridge was dangerous, but not completely inaccessible. ’So why are these cars still full of stuff?’

After a moment’s thought, he believed he understood why.

It was the terrain. The bridge was narrow, with the river on both sides. Once blocked by zombies, there was virtually no escape. Moreover, the sheer number of abandoned vehicles made movement difficult, and it would be easy to get surrounded. Most survivors would rather take their chances elsewhere than risk coming onto the bridge.

As a result, the bridge became a forgotten corner, and the supplies inside the cars were left untouched.

Xu Mo didn’t hold back. He scavenged useful items as he cleared the road. He took everything he could use, and whenever his backpack was full, he would ferry the supplies back to his vehicle before returning to continue his work.

Going back and forth like this, time flew by.

The sun slowly arced westward, and the sky began to dim.

Xu Mo finally cleared a path wide enough for his SUV. It stretched from one end of the bridge to the other, snaking through the dense jam of vehicles, just wide enough for one car to pass.

He might need to make some adjustments in a few spots, but regardless, the way was open.

Xu Mo stood at the end of the bridge and glanced back. It had taken him the entire day to work his way across the two-kilometer-long structure. Behind him, the path he had cleared snaked through the jam. By the time he drove across and reached the opposite bank, the sky had already grown dark.

Once he reached the end of the bridge, Xu Mo stopped the car to survey the city before him. This was another part of Jiangzhou City. The city was built across the river, with urban districts on both the north and south banks. He was now on the southern side.

In the twilight, the skyscrapers stood like silent giants. The streets were deserted, with no active zombies in sight, but Xu Mo knew they were merely hiding. They would come out once night fell completely.

Xu Mo’s gaze swept over the urban district, then he glanced back at the bridge behind him.

After a moment’s hesitation, he cranked the steering wheel and drove back onto the bridge.

He parked on the side of the bridge, got out, and walked to the entrance, where he shoved a few cars together to block the intersection leading into the city. ℴ

He didn’t block it completely, but merely created an obstacle. Anyone—or any zombie—trying to get onto the bridge from this side would have to put in some effort to pass.

With that done, Xu Mo returned to his car, reclined the seat, and settled in for the night.

...

As night deepened, Xu Mo lay on the reclined seat, gazing at the sky through the window. There were no stars, no moon. In the darkness, the long line of cars on the bridge was reduced to a vague silhouette, like a pack of silent beasts.

Just as Xu Mo closed his eyes, preparing to sleep, a sound came from the distance.

"ROAR—"

It was the roar of a zombie. Not just one, but many.

The roars came from all directions—some near, some far, some high-pitched, some low. They rose and fell in waves, as if in response to one another, almost like they were communicating.

Xu Mo’s eyes snapped open. He looked through the window toward the city district on the opposite bank of the river. The roars were coming from there.

In the darkness, between the skyscrapers, he could faintly make out moving shadows. Some roamed the streets, others weaved between the buildings, and a few were gathered in groups, doing who-knows-what.
