Chapter 391: Chapter 183: Explanation
’He must be from Qinglin Town. That guy didn’t know the full story; he only saw me shoot someone. Then he ran to Qinglin Town, spun some wild tale, and painted me as a butcher who slaughters innocents in the wilderness.’
There was no chance to explain, no possibility to argue my case.
Before the four patrol guards at the outpost could even fully react, Xu Mo was already moving.
He slammed the gas pedal to the floor and yanked the steering wheel hard.
The SUV’s tires let out a piercing SCREECH on the pavement. A cloud of dust billowed up as the vehicle’s rear end fishtailed, whipping it around.
"Stop!"
"Don’t run!"
Shouts and the frantic pounding of footsteps erupted behind him, followed immediately by a series of gunshots.
A bullet struck the SUV’s rear windshield, which instantly spiderwebbed with cracks. Xu Mo ducked low, hands spinning the wheel wildly as the SUV swerved in a zigzag down the road.
"BANG! BANG! BANG!"
A few more shots.
Xu Mo felt the vehicle shudder violently as something slammed into its rear flank. He had no time to check the damage. A glance in his rearview mirror showed the outpost gate opening and three vehicles bursting out in pursuit.
"Dammit."
Xu Mo cursed through gritted teeth, stomping the accelerator down even harder.
The road he had just driven in on was now his path to survival.
In the rearview mirror, the three vehicles fanned out into an inverted V formation to pursue him. Their cars were clearly modified and fast. What’s more, they were far more familiar with the terrain and quickly closed the distance.
’This is a mess. Looks like my only option is to go around this town.’
Xu Mo took a deep breath, suppressed all distracting thoughts, and focused on the road ahead. The gunfire from behind continued, and bullets occasionally whizzed past the SUV, tearing through the air with a sharp sound.
This was not the time to stop, nor could he turn back to explain.
In a situation like this, stopping was suicide.
The SUV veered off the road and plunged into the wilderness beside it. Xu Mo’s plan was simple: use the SUV’s all-terrain capabilities to shake off his pursuers, then bypass Qinglin Town and continue east.
But the three vehicles behind him clearly had no intention of letting him go so easily, and they continued their relentless pursuit.
Xu Mo watched the three vehicles in his rearview mirror, a wave of frustration washing over him. ’These people are certainly dedicated. I’m just a stranger passing through. Even if I really had killed an innocent survivor, is it worth them chasing me this desperately? Aren’t they afraid I’ll turn around and kill them instead?’
But frustration was one thing; Xu Mo also knew that this reaction perfectly demonstrated Qinglin Town’s zero-tolerance policy toward survivors killing one another.
They weren’t coming for him; they were coming for the murderer. In their eyes, he was a dangerous individual with blood on his hands who had to be brought to justice.
’But the problem is, I really didn’t slaughter anyone innocent!’ A frustrated breath was trapped in Xu Mo’s chest with nowhere to go.
The wilderness terrain grew more complex, and the SUV’s suspension groaned and creaked under the strain. But Xu Mo couldn’t afford to worry about the vehicle; his only thought was how to shake off the people behind him.
However, the three vehicles stuck to him like glue, clinging relentlessly to his tail. They were clearly used to high-speed chases on this kind of terrain, and their driving skills were far better than Xu Mo had imagined. The distance between them didn’t grow; instead, it shrank.
Then, the guns fired again.
BANG BANG BANG—!
A spray of bullets swept over, one of them hitting the back of the SUV. Xu Mo heard a muffled THUD from behind—the sound of a bullet punching through the vehicle’s metal body and burying itself in a seat.
Xu Mo’s eyes instantly turned cold. ’They’re playing for keeps.’
Xu Mo gritted his teeth. Keeping one hand on the steering wheel, he reached for the AK-47 on the passenger seat. He didn’t want to take their lives. His pursuers were just following orders, acting on a one-sided story. They were just doing what they believed was right.
But that didn’t mean Xu Mo was going to let them kill him.
Taking a deep breath, Xu Mo suddenly slammed on the brakes. The SUV’s body lurched violently, its straight-line escape turning into a sideways slide.
The move was too sudden. The three vehicles behind clearly hadn’t expected it. The lead car almost crashed straight into him, its driver yanking the wheel in a panic as the vehicle shuddered violently.
Xu Mo seized the opening, aiming the AK-47 out the window with one hand.
He wasn’t aiming for the people inside. He kept the muzzle low, targeting the other vehicle’s tires.
RAT-A-TAT-TAT—!
A short burst.
The front-left tire of the lead car exploded. It deflated instantly, and the vehicle lost its balance, careening headfirst into a shallow ditch.
With one pursuing vehicle dealt with, Xu Mo accelerated again. The remaining two cars were clearly shaken, but they didn’t retreat. Instead, they fanned out, attempting to flank him.
Xu Mo narrowed his eyes, braked again, and fired another burst.
RAT-A-TAT!
The rear tire of the vehicle on the right exploded. The car swerved violently, spun halfway around, and skidded to a stop, blocking the path.
Only one left!
The driver of the last vehicle seemed to finally realize that his prey was not going to be taken down easily. He hesitated for a split second, then instead of stopping, he floored it and charged forward, attempting to force an interception.
Xu Mo sighed, the muzzle of his rifle appearing out the window once more.
RAT-TAT~
A precise two-round burst. The last vehicle’s front-right tire blew out. The car swerved sharply, scraping past the rear of Xu Mo’s SUV before crashing into a concrete block half-buried in the dirt.
