Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

The few surviving researchers scrambled across the floor in terror, desperately seeking a quiet corner to hide in.

This woman was terrifyingly strong. She had appeared out of nowhere and was handling a behemoth like Experiment #1 with ease, all on her own.

’When did Gushang Base get someone like this?’

Xie Ning couldn’t care less what these researchers thought of her. With a few CRACKS of her hammer, she broke the huge monster’s legs. Then, she pulled a spiked metal plate from her Space and hurled it onto the monster’s body.

Before anyone could react, she brought her hammer down with two ferocious blows.

The spiked metal plate drove straight into the monster’s thick chest. The researchers who witnessed it from the sidelines were so terrified they nearly foamed at the mouth.

Let alone the monster, which was experiencing it firsthand.

The monster wasn’t a zombie; it could still feel pain.

The sensation of lying on a bed of nails was... pure agony.

With the spiked plate pinned to its body, the big hammer pressed down relentlessly. Xie Ning brought her Big Golden Hammer down with thunderous CLANGS.

It was a tale so tragic it would make listeners grieve and onlookers weep...

The few researchers still clinging to life dragged their numb legs, their white lab coats hanging loosely, and crawled toward the experiment pods.

Fear made them almost forget how to speak.

’Just get out of this horrible place. Get away from this terrifying woman. The farther, the better.’

But Xie Ning didn’t let them crawl for long. She swung her Big Golden Hammer, sending one of the huge monster’s legs flying, smashing it right onto two of the researchers.

The giant leg weighed over a hundred pounds. In one strike, it crushed the two scholarly-looking researchers, causing them to vomit blood and collapse heavily to the ground.

Further struggle was impossible. Pinned beneath the massive leg, the two were left gasping for their last breaths, on the verge of death.

Xie Ning glanced over, picked up her shrunken hammer, and walked down the corridor.

The doors to the experiment pods on both sides were splattered with the monster’s blood.

After losing its legs, the creature was like a plucked chicken. Its upper body thrashed on the floor, howling and rolling as it struggled to drag itself toward the experiment pods up ahead.

Xie Ning used her Gold Ability to cleanly rip off the doors of two experiment pods. Before entering, she took off her large helmet and put on a gas mask.

Once she was certain her protection was foolproof, she stepped into the experiment pod.

The two rows on this floor were all experiment pods, containing plenty of research equipment. Xie Ning looted everything that looked useful.

In the third experiment pod, Xie Ning found a pile of potent medicines for high fevers and pain, as well as many nutritional IV drips.

She looked at the medicine’s description; the production date was within the last two months.

Xie Ning unhesitatingly stored the dozen-plus boxes of potent medicines and nutritional drips in her personal Space.

Her personal Space now was a world of difference from before. After expanding, its area was approaching 3,000 square meters.

Even without the farmhouse and villa area, her own little independent space was more than enough to get by in the apocalypse.

’Thinking back to my pathetic two-square-meter space at the beginning feels like a different lifetime.’

Xie Ning kicked away a researcher lying in the way in the corridor and strode towards another experiment pod.

The researcher’s head hit the experiment wall. He saw stars from the pain and couldn’t help but mutter, "You, don’t you want to know wh-what this place is?"

’This woman is so bizarre!’

’She came in, said nothing, and just started killing everyone in her path. She’s a walking weapon of mass destruction.’

’Shouldn’t anyone raiding an experimental area capture researchers like us alive to interrogate later?’

’Why isn’t she asking any questions? Why isn’t she saying anything? She’s just looting these pods, treating valuable researchers like us as if we’re nothing?’

Xie Ning kicked open another experiment pod door with a heavy thud. She could sense the strange, foul stench from within, even through her gas mask.

This experiment pod was filled with rotting meat soaking in stinking black water. Countless microbes crawled within, a sight that made Xie Ning’s skin crawl.

She snapped a few photos and sent them to Gu Chen and Lu Wei, then slammed the door and backed away.

That researcher, afraid she would kick him again as she passed and end his life, quickly clutched his bleeding head and shouted, "I, I can tell you anything."

"I-I can tell you everything, just don’t kill me."

Xie Ning glanced at him.

She hadn’t even asked anything, yet he was spilling the beans, telling her everything he knew in a rush. "The base commander has already escaped through the underground passage. He made us do all of this."

"Studying the structure of mutated animals, doing some human experiments, i-it was to see if the human body could, could mutate like these animals."

"Why can Superpower Users evolve, but most normal people can’t?"

"We wanted to find the pattern in this, to give ordinary people a chance to become Superpower Users too."

"In the experiment pod on the f-fourth floor, there is, there is the first-generation Evolution Potion. It c-can give ordinary people a chance to mutate."

Xie Ning blinked, her expression gradually turning serious.

’Evolution Potion?’

She seemed to have heard of it in her past life.

It was said to be a great boon for ordinary people aspiring to become Superpower Users. As long as they took the Evolution Potion, there was a fifty percent chance of evolving into one.

But the potions that circulated on the black market back then were faulty. Most people who spent a fortune on them ended up dying gruesomely, their bodies exploding.

So this Evolution Potion was quickly designated by the officials as one of the "apocalypse scams," reminding residents of all bases not to easily buy and try it.

This potion had caused quite a stir. Xie Ning had also heard that some people had actually evolved a rare superpower through this exorbitantly priced Evolution Potion.

But they were a minority. Most people couldn’t afford it and believed the official word, thinking that the sellers of the Evolution Potion were just scammers.

So after a tumultuous month or two, this thing completely disappeared without a trace.

’I can’t believe the source was here at Gushang Base all along. It’s certainly opened my eyes.’

She killed the researcher before her—his eyes wide with disbelief—with a single swing of her hammer. Shaking her small golden hammer, Xie Ning walked past the corpse, her face devoid of emotion.

’How amusing. Did he really think he could save his life by offering a few tidbits of information?’

’I could just grab anyone and read their mind to get even more comprehensive information.’

’I just can’t be bothered to read the minds of small fry like them.’

’If I’m going to read a mind, it should be the person in charge of the experimental area. It would save me from taking the long way around.’

Xie Ning continued kicking open experiment pod doors, collecting another wave of loot before heading up to the fourth floor.

The moment she reached the fourth floor, she felt an oppressive atmosphere.

On both sides were heavy-duty metal security doors. The lights overhead seemed to be broken; only one at the far end of the corridor emitted a faint, ghostly white light.

The struggling two-headed giant monster had long since bled to death. All movement had now stopped. The entire corridor was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

The far end of the eerie corridor was bathed in a deathly pale light.
