Chapter 315: Chapter 244: A Canopy Over the Wilds (Part 3)
"Ji Xin, put out the fire. Are you trying to burn the building down?"
"Hmph!"
Zhao Dezhu snorted heavily. With a thought, the sharp bone claw slowly retracted, and the monster shrouded in white cloth retreated into the shadows behind him, falling silent once more.
Ji Xin dispelled the white fire in his hand, but his eyes remained cold as he stared at him.
"Yan Mu! I’m not joking with you all!"
Zhao Dezhu shot a vicious glare at the middle-aged man, Yan Mu, then grabbed the axe from the table and brandished it at the young man, Ji Xin.
"Are you blind?! Didn’t you see this axe? If you’ve got the guts, go on and melt it down!"
"That’s enough." Yan Mu waved a hand, signaling for them to calm down. "Ji Xin, show some respect. A portion of the crystals you eat were provided by Zhao. You should know to repay kindness."
He mediated, giving Zhao Dezhu a way to back down gracefully. Then, his tone shifted as he stared into Zhao Dezhu’s eyes.
"You said you released that ’pig’ when you left?"
"Yes..." A flicker of vengeful glee crossed Zhao Dezhu’s eyes at the mention of it. "That thing... it’s a living tank now."
"That guy has absolutely no way to deal with the pig. He couldn’t even kill the Giant-Armed Zombie."
He sighed and said with some regret, "Let alone that pig... It’s just a shame my two carefully cultivated Mutated Zombies both ended up as its feed."
"So what’s your plan now?" Yan Mu asked in a low voice, his fingers tapping a rhythm on the tabletop. "A lost base can be replaced, but if that pig is gone, my plans..."
"I think I can do it now!"
Zhao Dezhu said eagerly,
"This is the only zombie I have left under my control. Just give me some time, and I can try to take full control of that pig!"
He thought for a few seconds, then steeled himself and said through gritted teeth,
"Brother Yan, do me a favor. Spare some supplies and get that ’healing’ Superpower User from the army to treat my injuries... Let me recover for a day, lend me two squads of men with heavy weapons and rocket launchers, and we’ll fight our way back!"
Zhao Dezhu grew more and more excited as he spoke, as if he could already envision a future of absolute dominion.
"I can temporarily control that pig. As long as we use heavy firepower to cripple it, I’m confident I can tame it! Once we tame that mutated pig king... will we still have to walk on eggshells around those military folks? The entire quarantine zone will be our personal source of crystals!"
"But what if that person... is still there?"
Yan Mu narrowed his eyes. The proposal was clearly very tempting, and he asked in a deep voice,
"You managed to escape this time. But if you go back with all those men and run into that person again, are you sure you’ll be able to return?"
"My men aren’t a private army. Just coordinating defenses with the higher-ups, scavenging for supplies, and maintaining order has us stretched thin enough as it is..."
Zhao Dezhu understood the warning in Yan Mu’s words. He gave a cold laugh, which pulled at the wound on his shoulder and made him grimace in pain, but the venom in his eyes only grew more intense.
"Brother Yan, you’re overestimating that kid and underestimating that pig."
He reached out and grabbed the heavy silver battle-axe from the table, its blade reflecting his twisted face.
"That kid is a bit uncanny, able to conjure metal weapons out of thin air... But do you know what that means for the pig king?"
Zhao Dezhu glanced around the conference table, his voice grim.
"It means—feed."
"The pig king can absorb his ability and become even more powerful!"
"If that kid is still there, it can only end one of two ways. Either he’s already been eaten by the pig, or he got so scared he pissed himself and vanished without a trace."
"He has a beat-up infantry fighting vehicle and only two or three people with him. He’ll have to come to the quarantine zone sooner or later. As long as we control the pig, then when the time comes..."
The room fell into a brief silence.
Only the occasional sound of scraping bones from the monster in the shadows could be heard.
After a long moment, Yan Mu stubbed out his cigarette. A glimmer of a gambler’s resolve flashed in his deep-set eyes.
"Alright."
"When the time comes, I don’t care what happens to the kid. Just bring the pig back!"
