The doors of the Central Command Hub slid open with a metallic hiss, and Lin Qing and Han Zheng strode onto the command deck.

The room was bathed in the harsh, flashing amber light of active alarms. Control consoles chimed rhythmically, and overhead speakers relayed static-laced telemetry from the surface perimeter towers. Sun Hao sat at the main terminal, his hands moving frantically across the illuminated keys, while Lu Feng and Guo Jiong stood over the primary display, their rifles slung across their tactical vests.

"Report, Sun Hao," Lin Qing commanded, her voice dropping into the quiet, absolute frequency of battle leadership. She stepped up to the primary terminal, her dark eyes locking onto the scrolling thermal feeds.

"Thermal spike resolved into multiple fast-moving contacts," Sun Hao said quickly, tapping a key to bring up the high-resolution infrared sweep of the gorge. "It’s not the giant blue core itself. It’s an organized vanguard—thirty to forty mutated descending fast through the upper canyon pass, heading straight for our surface airlock and the maintenance depot."

Han Zheng leaned over the terminal, his brow furrowing as he analyzed the energy signatures flashing on the screen. "Look at the core readings. They all have energy cores."

"Correct," Sun Hao confirmed, zooming in on the leading cluster of thermal signatures. "We’re seeing a dense mix of Red Energy Cores and Orange Energy Cores. The orange ones are hyper-agile, moving along the vertical cliff faces at extreme speeds. They’re charging in a tight wedge formation."

Lin Qing looked at the secondary orbital satellite display pinned to the top right of the main screen.

High above the rushing crimson-and-orange horde, perched motionless on a jagged, snow-dusted granite needle three thousand feet up the ridge, was the silhouette of the blue-core Apex Commander.

It was not hidden in the fog, nor was it making any attempt to conceal its presence. Its towering, dark form stood clearly against the stark white ice, its concentrated blue core pulsing with a slow, hypnotic rhythm.

It made no move to join the charge, nor did it utter a roar to command the vanguard. It simply stood there in the freezing mountain wind, its cold, intelligent gaze fixed down on the Research Center, silently watching the valley unfold like a grandmaster observing a chessboard.

"It’s not participating," Lu Feng remarked, his jaw tightening as he stared at the frozen blue silhouette on the satellite feed. "It’s just standing there."

"It doesn’t need to fight," Han Zheng said, his eyes narrowing as he instantly deciphered the beast’s tactical logic. "It sent its shock troops to test us. It wants to see how fast we react. Lu Feng, Guo Jiong, prep the upper ramparts. Song Yan, take the heavy rifle station with Old Wang. We hold the inner perimeter and rely on our hardwired traps. Do not reveal our heavy thermal cannon positions unless the inner gate is compromised."

"Understood!"

Within three minutes, Lin Qing, Han Zheng and their team were positioned behind the reinforced steel firing slits of the surface ramparts, overlooking the gorge.

The mountain wind howled through the narrow mountain pass, but the intense heat radiating from the approaching vanguard was already melting the thawing snow along the canyon floor.

Through the crosshairs of her high-powered sniper rifle, Lin Qing watched the vanguard break through the tree line at the mouth of the gorge.

The red-core crawlers came first—sleek, quadrupedal horrors with elongated limbs and razor-sharp spinal ridges that glowed with a sickening, blood red light. They moved with terrifying fluidity, leaping from rock face to rock face, bypassing the frozen floor entirely. Right behind them surged the orange-core juggernauts. They were massive, muscular hulks with thick, stone-like hides, their chest cavities pulsing with a fierce, bright orange combustion energy that kicked up plumes of white steam as they plowed through the drifts.

"Target the red crawlers on the rocks first!" Lin Qing ordered through the squad comms. "Keep them off the upper camera towers! Old Wang, hold the orange cores at the minefield line!"

"Firing!" Old Wang called out.

The heavy, thundering crack of Old Wang’s anti-material rifle echoed through the canyon, the armor-piercing round tearing clean through the shoulder of a leading orange-core juggernaut. The beast stumbled, its orange core flaring violently, but its sheer momentum carried it forward, roaring as it slammed into the outer perimeter fence.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The newly installed proximity tripwires and remote claymore charges inside the maintenance shed blind spot detonated in rapid succession. High-explosive shrapnel tore through the canyon, shredding the legs of three orange core beasts and collapsing a section of the cliff face onto the advancing line

Above the roaring explosions and the shrieks of dying beasts, the red-core crawlers swarmed up the concrete walls of the outer depot.

Lin Qing squeezed her trigger with calm, mechanical precision.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

Her suppressed rifle spat high-velocity red core rounds with deadly accuracy. Each shot struck true, shattering the glowing red energy stones embedded in the chests of the agile crawlers. Spurt after spurt of boiling dark fluid painted the white snow, causing the creatures to lose their grip and plunge dozens of feet to the jagged rocks below.

Lu Feng and Guo Jiong leaned out from the secondary bunker, sweeping the remaining orange-core juggernauts with concentrated heavy machine-gun fire. Tracers crisscrossed the dark gorge, punching through thick hide and detonating the volatile orange cores in bright, localized geysers of fire and shattered bone.

For ten frantic, violent minutes, the canyon echoed with the deafening roar of gunfire, landmine detonations, and screeching beasts.

The red-and-orange vanguard fought with mindless, feral savagery, attempting to tear through the steel blast gates with their bare claws, but the base’s defense was an impenetrable wall of disciplined, interlocking fire fields. Every attempt to scale the walls was met with sharp, coordinated marksman rounds; every attempt to breach the gate was checked by minefields and heavy caliber suppressive fire.

One by one, the red and orange lights in the gorge flickered out.

The last orange-core juggernaut, its chest torn open by Han Zheng’s final heavy shell, collapsed heavily into the slush thirty yards from the primary airlock, its orange glow fading slightly as it perished.

A sudden, eerie silence settled over the gorge, broken only by the soft, steady hiss of steam rising from the dozens of burning corpses scattered across the snow.

On the upper ramparts, Lu Feng lowered his smoking machine gun, letting out a long, ragged breath that misted in the freezing air. Guo Jiong ejected a hot shell casing, checking his rifle’s ammo counter with a tired sigh.

Lin Qing didn’t lower her rifle. She slowly pivoted her optic scope upward, adjusting the magnification lens and sweeping the crosshairs up the three-thousand-foot vertical rock face to the high glacial ridge.

Through the clear optic lens, she locked eyes with the blue-core Commander.

The massive seven-foot beast remained standing on the frozen precipice, completely untouched by the carnage below. Its concentrated blue core continued to pulse with that calm, rhythmic, intelligent light. It hadn’t shown any reaction when its vanguard was wiped out.

As Lin Qing watched through her crosshairs, the blue mutated slowly lifted its large, clawed head toward the ramparts. It stared directly down the line of her rifle barrel, as if acknowledging her presence across the vast distance.

Then, with smooth, deliberate grace, the creature slowly turned its heavy shoulders, took a single step backward and vanished completely behind the wall.

On the command hub console downstairs, the satellite monitor beeped softly as the blue thermal point vanished from the sensor grid.

Han Zheng stepped up beside Lin Qing on the cold steel rampart, lowering his anti-material rifle. He stared out at the smoking graveyard of red and orange corpses in the gorge, his face grim and unreadable.

"They’re all dead," Han Zheng said quietly, his deep voice heavy with weight. "We cleared the entire vanguard in under fifteen minutes without taking a single casualty."

Lin Qing slowly lowered her sniper rifle, the cold mountain wind whipping her dark hair across her cheek. Her expression was devoid of triumph. Her eyes were dark, sharp, and filled with a chilling, sudden clarity.

"That wasn’t an attack, Han Zheng," Lin Qing said softly, her voice carrying a cold, quiet weight that made the surrounding air feel even colder. "It was a test."

Han Zheng turned to look at her, his dark eyes narrowing. "A test?"

"It didn’t send those red and orange cores to conquer this base," Lin Qing explained, turning to look back down into the quiet, blood-soaked canyon. "It sent them to measure us. It watched where we placed our tripwires. It recorded how fast our squads deployed to the surface."

She looked up toward the empty ridge where the blue silhouette had stood moments prior.

"The blue core didn’t lose a battle today," Lin Qing concluded, her voice steady and chilling. "It bought intelligence with disposable army. And now that it knows exactly how we defend these gates, it’s going back to its hive to build a force designed specifically to tear them down."
