Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts
Chapter 1257 - 211: The Spy Reports In!
Wen Yu’s secluded life thus began, studying skills daily, cooking his own meals, and calling Cyclops and Victor back to his side. He occasionally used the Dream Come True Skill System to refresh his physical limits, quietly living as a dog and cat-loving bachelor, finding his days to be quite delightful.
It was tough on Cyclops and Victor, though, as the Dream Come True Skill System required their skill augmentation to be effective. Wen Yu couldn’t delay his progress in breaking limits. As such, Wen Yu had no choice but to go back on his word, retracting Cyclops and Victor’s vacation, leaving the two little fellows quietly by his side.
Victor didn’t mind; he had a quiet and calm nature, like an old cat nearing its end, content wherever he was. However, Cyclops was envious of the outside’s vibrant world, a situation distressing for the few mutant beasts in Maple Leaf Town. Though he couldn’t reveal his strength, even the faint pressure leaked by Cyclops was enough for him to dominate in Maple Leaf Town.
Well, only within the circle of local dogs.
The townspeople didn’t suspect anything unusual about Cyclops—being in a mini state, Cyclops appeared as a harmless small local dog about the length of a forearm. With the mutation and evolution of animals, their intelligence continuously rose, making them well aware of pros and cons, causing these mutant animals to rarely act harmfully. Of course, necessary precautions were still in place, like the shock collar now hanging on Cyclops’s neck...
It was some kind of black technology that Wen Yu acquired from the livestock management bureau, intended to prevent cats, dogs, and such animals from suddenly attacking people. Of course, assuming this thing could control Cyclops was laughable, but even for the mutant creatures it couldn’t control, it was sufficient to instill enough consciousness that they wouldn’t easily launch an attack.
As for the remaining few soul pets, Wen Yu did not call them back, instead leaving them in the Level 7 area to fill the defense gap left by Tang Haofei’s departure.
In short, everything seemed calm, and it was a rare occasion for Wen Yu to enjoy some peaceful time.
But the good times didn’t last long.
...
"Activate the spies in the tiered battleground’s main city and find Tang Haofei’s whereabouts for me."
A word from above, and those below run themselves ragged.
The total area of the main city of the tiered battleground was one million square kilometers, close to the size of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Such a grand city, combined with the thorough defense of its soul puppets, makes finding someone not much simpler than the former Demigod forces searching for Tang Haofei’s secluded place.
Demigod had numerous spies planted in the main city of the tiered battleground. As the control core of the tiered battleground and the core of Wen Yu’s forces, anything happening here is a monumental event, enough to change the world. In reality, not only Demigod, but even Yanjing had established a thorough spy network here.
These things, Mountain Kui probably had some understanding of, but considering his own boss’s character and the social nature of soul puppets, trivial spies like this didn’t concern Mountain Kui at all—the important places were all guarded by soul puppets. All authority and government departments were under the control of soul puppets. Without the owner’s permission, no human or mutant creature was allowed to access certain secret areas, and if it’s unimportant, ’Would you like me to open the door for you to have a look?’
So Mountain Kui wasn’t afraid of intelligence leaks, nor was he afraid of those spies.
Following the Demigod’s order, the spies from Demigod’s side in the main city of the tiered battleground began to move. They discreetly gathered information, investigating Tang Haofei’s possible hiding spots one by one. But, as previously mentioned, this task was exceptionally challenging.
Demigod feared stirring up trouble and instructed the spies to act cautiously. Coupled with the social nature of soul puppets, the entire investigation process took more than three months to yield preliminary results.
And this preliminary finding... was indeed very preliminary...
"Sir, we have locked Tang Haofei’s location in this area."
In the virtual projection, the spy leader drew a large circle on the aerial map of the main city of the tiered battleground. This circle covered an area roughly one-tenth the size of the entire tiered battleground.
Demigod’s face involuntarily twitched as he gazed at the large circle drawn by the spy leader. He looked at the spy leader ahead, opened his mouth, but didn’t know what to say.
The difficulty of the task was something Demigod had foreseen. Expecting results without considering the capabilities of subordinates and opponents was akin to hooliganism.
The spies indeed did their best; the conditions were just too stringent. The spy leader knew he hadn’t done well this time, and he merely frowned, unsure of what to say.
After a while, Demigod spoke.
"So, we can’t go in?"
"We can’t go in; the circle encloses restricted zones, involving the central control tower, military munitions district, soul puppet production center, and the villa of the tiered battleground’s owner. The only ones who can enter there are the soul puppets..."
The spy leader stated his stance. "The only ones who can enter there are the soul puppets," which, although a fact, could also be seen as an excuse for the spy leader. However, it was unintentional from the speaker and deliberate from the listener. Demigod froze upon hearing this and furrowed his brow, pondering for a long while before signaling to the spy leader.
"You may leave first. By the way, go collect your salary from logistics; all the spies’ wages for these three months are doubled!"
"Thank you, sir!"
The expected punishment did not come; instead, there was a bit of small reward. Demigod’s magnanimity was indeed extraordinary, giving the spy leader a feeling of happiness at seeing a glimmer of hope after despair as he discreetly retreated, leaving only Demigod behind.
Once the spy left, Demigod rose from his chair. He approached the aerial map of the tiered battleground, focusing on the large circle that occupied more than one-tenth of the screen, and then spoke.
"Looks like I’ll have to send you to have a look."
This seemed like a dialogue with the air. However, as soon as Demigod finished speaking, his shadow on the ground rippled out. The "Demigod Shadow" twisted continuously before finally stabilizing beside Demigod.
"Yes, Master."
The shadow replied accordingly.
Upon hearing the response from his main soul puppet, Demigod squinted his eyes. He took another look at the screen before speaking again.
"Infiltrate this area, find Tang Haofei’s traces; I can’t fathom the danger within, nor do I know what might happen when soul puppets of different masters meet... Might they detect something unusual about you? Can your concealment ability deceive the perception of Wen Yu’s soul puppets, or even further, you might encounter Wen Yu himself... These are all dangers involved, yet at this moment, you are the only one I can rely on."
