Chapter 233: Chapter 233 Miracle Drug

The nurse remained standing beside the door, her fingers resting on the handle as she considered how to answer Ronan’s question. When she finally turned around, the hesitation in her expression made him increasingly uneasy.

"I’m sorry, sir. I wasn’t part of the team that brought you here, so I don’t know what happened to the others," she explained, glancing towards the bandages covering his shoulder. "But I’ll inform the doctor that you’re awake. He should be able to answer some of your questions."

Ronan stared at her in disbelief. He had expected to hear that Don and the others were being treated somewhere nearby, perhaps in another ward, but her uncertainty made him fear something terrible had happened.

"Then please find someone who knows," Ronan pleaded, struggling to keep his voice steady. "There was a man named Don, and a young woman who helped me. She was right beside me when those monsters attacked. I need to know what happened to them."

The nurse’s expression softened when she noticed the desperation in his eyes. She had attended to enough survivors to recognize the fear of someone who had awakened without knowing whether the people beside him had survived.

"I’ll ask the doctor," she promised. "But please don’t try to get out of bed. Your body hasn’t fully recovered."

Ronan nodded reluctantly, and the nurse left.

Once the door closed, he lowered his head and stared at the blanket covering his legs. The room was warm, the bed comfortable, and the medical equipment beside him looked almost untouched by the destruction outside. Yet none of those things brought him any comfort.

He remembered the enormous wall surrounding the Severance Cult’s base, the bloodstained gate and the soldiers standing above them. He had shouted Camile’s name until his throat hurt, believing that if she knew he was outside, she would surely help him.

Then the monsters attacked them from every corner. Ronan’s breathing grew uneven as he remembered Don swinging his bat desperately while the others screamed for the soldiers to open the gate. The creatures were too fast, and every attempt to fight them seemed to end with another person being dragged into death.

The young woman who had supported him throughout their escape had refused to abandon him, even when his injured shoulder made it almost impossible for him to stand.

He remembered her frightened expression when one of the monsters lunged towards them. She had pushed him away with all her remaining strength, placing herself between him and the creature.

After that, his memories became muffled and confused.

There had been a terrible impact, followed by pain so intense that he could barely breathe. He remembered falling beneath her and feeling something sharp tear into his flesh before everything turned dark.

Ronan slowly raised his hand towards his shoulder, where his wound was. His fingers trembled midair when he couldn’t feel the wound.

The realization made his heart pound. He hurriedly pulled aside the collar of his hospital gown, ignoring the discomfort spreading through his chest as he searched for the wound.

Instead of the terrible injury he remembered, he found smooth, newly healed skin beneath the dressing.

How was that possible? His eyes widened. He wasn’t sure if he should be happy or worried.

Before he could examine it further, the door opened again.

An older doctor entered, accompanied by the nurse. When he noticed Ronan’s disturbed dressing and anxious expression, he approached the bed immediately.

"You shouldn’t remove the dressing yet," the doctor said, examining his shoulder. "Although your wounds have healed, your body is still recovering from the blood loss and exhaustion."

Ronan barely listened to the warning. "Doctor, I was bitten by one of those monsters," he said urgently, he knew there was no point hiding the truth since it had already been seen. "...but the wound is gone. How did that happen?"

The doctor adjusted the dressing before answering. "You were treated with a miracle drug, which has the ability to cure any illness. Your injuries were serious when you arrived, but fortunately, the treatment was successful."

Ronan stared at him, struggling to understand what he had heard. He knew that some people had awakened extraordinary abilities after the apocalypse, but he had never imagined that there would be a miracle drug that could heal such terrible injuries.

"Does that mean I’m not infected?" Ronan asked, his voice trembling slightly. His heart thudded against his chest.

The doctor paused, and the brief hesitation was enough to make Ronan’s stomach tighten.

"The healing ability repaired the physical damage," he explained carefully. "However, we still need to observe you. We don’t know everything about those creatures or what their bites might do to a human body, if it is going to cause your cells to mutate or not."

Ronan’s face gradually lost its color. He had survived the attack, but the possibility that something dangerous remained inside him made it difficult to feel relieved.

"And the people who came with me?" he asked again, refusing to let the doctor change the subject. "Did any of them survive?"

The doctor looked at him for a moment before sighing.

"I’m sorry," he answered. "You were the only person brought in alive."

Ronan froze. For several seconds, he could only stare at the doctor, unable to accept what he had heard.

"All of them?" he whispered.

The doctor nodded.

Ronan slowly lowered his gaze. His fingers tightened around the bedsheet as the memory of the young woman shielding him returned with painful clarity.

She had saved his life. And now she was dead.

Several hours ago

Inside the Severance Cult’s headquarters, Camile had been reviewing the latest reports from the weapons development team when one of her trusted subordinates entered her office.

The man closed the door carefully behind him, and the unusual caution in his movements made Camile lift her head.

"What happened?" she asked, setting the report aside.

"Vice-Leader, there’s something you need to know," the man replied, lowering his voice. "A group of survivors reached the outer gate during the monster attack. One of them was calling your name."

Camile’s brows drew together. "My name?" she repeated, wondering who would be foolish enough to seek her help during such a dangerous attack.

"Yes," the subordinate answered. "The soldiers identified him as Ronan Wayne."

Camile’s expression changed immediately. Ronan Wayne?

For a moment, she thought she had misheard him. She had not seen Ronan for a long time, and after the apocalypse began, she had assumed that he was either dead or wandering somewhere outside the protected settlements.

"Are you certain?" she asked, leaning forward.

The subordinate nodded. "Yes, Vice-Leader. He kept shouting your name and begging the soldiers to open the gate."

Camile rose from her chair, her mind already racing.

Ronan was a member of the Wayne family. Although he had separated from them before the apocalypse, he might still know where Alexander and the others had relocated.
