Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person
Chapter 590 - 503: Mutated Zombie Emitting Black Smoke (2)
"You need to stay here to maintain order. I did a quick check, and at least seven brothers have been bitten. If they turn into zombies, you must act swiftly, understand?"
Zhang Su whispered to Zhao Dezhu.
Zhao Dezhu suddenly understood, but he was still a bit unhappy, quietly gesturing towards Ju Mumio: "That woman is ruthless, leaving her here is even... damn, she seems to have heard us."
He noticed Ju Mumio suddenly looking at him with a strange expression, clearly aware that he was speaking ill of her.
"I think you’re more reliable, alright? It’s on you, stop dawdling, hurry up and finish things here, try to get to the barracks sooner!"
"Of course I’m reliable, what? I was thinking I could go back soon, completely forgot about Old Li’s side, really..."
Zhao Dezhu was quite happy to hear Zhang Su praise him, but the last part left him dumbfounded; he wanted to quickly return to Celestial Horse Island to see his wife.
Soon, more than twenty people with guns descended the stairs. Some had run out of bullets, especially those with special models who didn’t get restocked, but even blending in with the group felt better than staying upstairs.
"A lot of people died in the earlier fight..."
"Yeah, at least a dozen brothers stayed here forever."
The scene on the first floor was once again in front of them, causing many to sigh heavily. The experience half an hour ago felt like an eternity, truly agonizing.
Zhang Su slowed his pace, his eyes scanning over the bodies. It was clear at a glance who were zombies and who were the fighters. Someone had already moved swiftly and made sure the fallen fighters would not turn, likely members of the Yama Corps; the location of the wounds was their old tradition.
"Once we’ve dealt with the big ones, we’ll recover our brave fallen brothers’ bodies and give them a decent group funeral!"
Zhang Su pointed at the ground.
"Mr. Zhang, we can find a sacred spot near Celestial Horse Island specifically to bury our heroic warriors, to honor their spirits."
Yuwen suggested, as he was most skilled in these matters.
"Teacher Yu’s suggestion is excellent, let’s do it. But for now, let’s resolve the current problem!"
Zhang Su immediately agreed.
From the expressions on everyone’s faces, it was clear that they felt comforted by this proposal.
In the realm of current understanding, the afterlife remains unknown, but respecting the fallen heroes can inspire the living. Being remembered by posterity is ideal; who wishes to die without a trace?
The group approached the damaged curtain wall of the mall and inquired of the brother on lookout; there was no movement for the moment.
Zhang Su allocated personnel to various positions, creating a reasonably structured network of fire, with over twenty guns aiming at the alley entrances on either side of the office building.
At the last moment, those without bullets dared not to hide it, quickly admitting their lack of ammo. Zhang Su was quite speechless; with a large group of people, you get a mixed bag of abilities. Fortunately, with Tan Huajun, Yuwen, and Wu Baokang, all skilled shooters, the task of taking down the six big ones seemed assured!
Boom, boom.
The truck, with a dented front and damaged cargo box, started up and reversed out, leaving debris scattered on the ground.
Zhang Su tried to rotate the cargo box, but it was already broken for some reason, so he adjusted the direction of the truck instead, aiming the opening at the office building. This was the last insurance; if the unimaginable happens and the firearms fail to take down the big ones, there was still the fire-breathing zombie in reserve.
With everything ready, he took out the walkie-talkie, initially pressing the call button without speaking, then quietly waited. He was unsure if Qi Xiaoshuai’s side was in danger; if it were quiet enough, even the slightest static could catch Qi Xiaoshuai’s attention.
Sure enough, after a moment, Qi Xiaoshuai responded softly: "Brother Su, how’s your preparation going? These big guys are really intending to head to the kindergarten. I’ve already distracted them once; they’re currently circling in front!"
"We’re ready here. Bring them over, but be careful, don’t make any unnecessary moves, don’t get caught up in the fight, don’t get greedy. Take down a few big ones and you’ll be credited with the main achievement!"
Zhang Su didn’t mind reminding a couple more times; he knew Qi Xiaoshuai loved to show off. He didn’t want him getting carried away seeing so many people on guard, trying to perform some stunt, which if successful, okay, but if he failed, it would be disastrous.
"Don’t worry, don’t worry, I know!"
With that, Qi Xiaoshuai put the walkie-talkie back in his bag, zipped it up gently. At that moment, he was hiding in a withered green belt, a thin layer of snow around him.
"You dumb guys, follow grandpa."
Standing up, he habitually brushed off the dust on his body. Just as he stepped out of the green belt, a grin spread on his face, creating a strained expression.
The big ones were in the middle of the street, while he stood at the intersection, approximately two hundred meters apart. This distance was very safe; he only needed to get within a hundred meters to make some noise and then turn around and run. That would guarantee a successful mission.
Unfortunately, things never go as planned. Just as Qi Xiaoshuai was about to execute the task, a leg suddenly emerged from the floor-to-ceiling glass window of a restaurant next to the big ones, followed by others. Over a dozen normal zombies appeared on the street, carelessly swaying their heads from side to side before following the big one’s pace to wander around...
The situation in the city was much more complicated than in the suburbs; dense buildings could hide zombies anywhere. Even after repeated cleanups, there could be survivors slipping through the cracks.
