Chapter 202: understanding the Void (2)

Leo raised his hand. His fingers were visible despite the absence of light, and his mind remained clear. Stranger still, the space felt familiar.

Without warning, a thought formed in his mind:

The Void does not begin where the light ends.

Leo stood still. The words hadn’t come from an outside voice; they felt like a memory he had never known he possessed. He stared into the dark, and another phrase followed:

Darkness is not emptiness.

His breathing slowed. The void around him remained motionless, yet he could feel something resting within it—not an enemy or a living presence, but something far more basic.

What you cannot perceive is not necessarily absent.

Leo clenched his fist as the memory of his knife test returned to him. Void Edge hadn’t cut his skin, despite its power against monsters. Perhaps the technique was never about making a blade sharper. Perhaps he had misunderstood its nature from the start.

Destruction is only one face of the Void.

His pupils narrowed. For a brief moment, he felt as if a vast presence had turned its focus onto him, stripped of malice or danger. It carried only a subtle sense of recognition, drawing him in as if he had finally returned home after wandering for too long.

Leo waited in the stillness while time lost its meaning.

Eventually, another realization brushed against his mind. He lowered his eyes to his hand, where a faint black sheen coated his fingertips. He stared at the dark energy, resisting the urge to force it into a shape or command its movement. For the first time, he simply watched it.

The energy didn’t feel like an external force he had borrowed or a weapon he was wielding; it felt natural, like an extension of his own body. His heart beat faster in his chest. Was this the true nature of his power?

No. Settling on that conclusion would be premature.

Leo sat down slowly, crossing his legs beneath him.

There was no ground under him, yet he rested comfortably as if supported by solid earth. The endless dark around him remained still and unchanged.

He closed his eyes.

He wasn’t in another dimension or a mysterious realm. This darkness existed within his own mind, a reflection of his effort to understand the power he had carried ever since becoming a superhuman.

Ever since his awakening, he had treated the Void purely as a weapon. He used it to sharpen his blades and slip through space. It was effective, but effectiveness was not true understanding.

Don’t just learn how to use your power. Understand what it truly is.

The Astral Master’s words echoed in his memory. Leo let them settle deep into his thoughts.

"What exactly is the Void?"

He asked without expecting a direct answer. Instead of searching for one, he simply watched his mind at work.

One thought appeared, held his attention for a moment, and then drifted away. Another took its place. Old memories surfaced and faded. Images formed before dissolving back into nothing. Even his own questions came and went, yet a quiet awareness remained beneath it all, observing every shift.

Leo focused on that steady awareness. He didn’t try to force it into shape or guide where it went. He watched thoughts emerge and vanish against the silent backdrop of his mind.

Gradually, he noticed a detail he had long overlooked. The arrival of a thought changed nothing about the awareness watching it, and neither did its departure. Thoughts varied, but the space where he perceived them stayed the exact same.

His brow furrowed slightly. Different things can appear and vanish without changing the foundation that allows them to exist.

Opening his eyes, he stared into the surrounding dark. For some reason, his thoughts turned toward his Void techniques.

Void Edge.

Void Walk.

Void Devour.

Until now, he had viewed them as three separate abilities with distinct purposes—one enhanced his strikes, another carried him across distance, and the last consumed whatever he targeted.

What if I’ve been looking at this all wrong?

Leo raised his right hand. A faint black sheen surfaced across his fingertips.

He studied the energy as it responded to his intent, spreading over his fingers and pooling at the tips. He could make it paper-thin or dense, but that no longer held his interest. Instead, he paid attention to the feeling underneath the movement.

The energy didn’t feel like something summoned from outside his body. It was already present, bound to him in a way he had never properly examined.

He had always focused on what the Void could accomplish. He had rarely considered what made those results possible in the first place.

Leo let the energy disperse.

What if Void Edge, Void Walk, and Void Devour aren’t fundamentally different powers? What if they’re just different expressions of the same underlying force?

It made sense, though he still lacked the proof to confirm it.

Returning to his meditation, he stopped dwelling on individual techniques and turned his focus to the Void itself.

He recalled the moment his powers first awakened—the raw destruction of Void Edge, the weightless shift of Void Walk, and the eerie pull of Void Devour. Each technique produced a completely different result, yet all carried the exact same underlying sensation. None of them obeyed the natural rules of the world he knew.

Leo stayed motionless, letting the memories drift through his mind until a clearer picture took shape.

The Void isn’t just darkness.

The dark was merely the form his mind assigned to it. A black blade didn’t mean his power was just energy meant for cutting. A dark sphere swallowing objects didn’t make the Void a force of pure consumption. Those were only the effects, not its true nature.

His breathing slowed to a steady rhythm. For the first time, he stopped trying to define the Void by how it looked or the damage it caused. He began to view it through what it represented.

The Void was the absence of ordinary boundaries—the line between presence and absence, the gap between what existed and what could no longer be seen.

The concepts were still raw, and he knew better than to mistake a few insights for full mastery. Yet a fundamental shift had occurred. Before, he had viewed his power as a tool that followed orders. Now, he realized his commands were merely small expressions of something far greater.

Leo lowered his hand, his voice barely above a whisper.

"The Void isn’t just a weapon." He paused, finding the right words. "It’s the foundation behind the abilities I’ve been using."

He couldn’t fully explain how that foundation worked, nor could he grasp why it allowed such varied effects. But he knew that relying on isolated techniques would only limit his growth. To move beyond what he already knew, he needed to master the core principle tying them all together.

A slight smile touched his lips.

"Looks like I’ve got a long way to go."
