Chapter 121: The Fortress in the Sky
"Is this... Ebonreach?!"
Sir Gareth Thorne’s pupils contracted to pinpricks the absolute instant the airborne citadel resolved fully against the midnight firmament, recognition striking him like a physical blow to the chest.
His breath caught in his throat, and for a long moment he could do nothing but stare upward.
He had walked its silent, echoing corridors once before, a fleeting, surreal experience in the immediate wake of its violent conquest.
After the fortress had changed masters, Kael had departed with the host without lingering a moment longer than necessary, granting Gareth no more than a passing glance.
It was enough to know the place defied every convention of mortal architecture, hovering suspended upon some ancient, incomprehensible arcane engine that thrummed deep within the earth’s crust.
Even then, he had felt that low, ceaseless vibration through the soles of his boots, like the heartbeat of something vast and sleeping.
What he had never dared to imagine, however, was that it possessed the terrifying capacity to traverse the open sky under its own volition, span vast continental distances, and vanish entirely beneath advanced conceptual shrouding.
The citadel had expanded dramatically since the night it fell. Imposing battlements now crowned its perimeter, bristling with heavy defensive engines and crenellations where cold-iron siege bolts waited eagerly in readied slots.
Pale runelight pulsed along the walls, and the fortress cast an immense shadow that slid across the battlefield below, swallowing the moonlight whole.
Along the ramparts stood dense ranks of Starborn archers, longbows drawn taut and quivers overflowing, every soldier radiating a cold, predatory intensity that seemed to chill the very wind sweeping across the battlements.
Not one of them wavered or so much as shifted a boot, as though carved from the stone beneath their feet.
A fortress materializing from absolute nothingness in the open firmament drew every eye across the sprawling, blood-soaked theater of war.
Swords paused mid-swing, and even the wounded lifted their heads from the dirt to look.
Streamers whipped their tracking lenses away from the vanguard without hesitation, pivoting entirely toward the newly manifested sky-city.
Global chat channels detonated across every active feed, a cascading avalanche of raw disbelief.
"Wait, a CITY just materialized in the sky?!"
"Is this real? Someone check if I’m hallucinating."
"Somebody with eyes on the territory tag, talk to me."
"Got it. Guild territory. Belongs to the Ascendant Concord."
"Wait, that’s Unrivaled’s guild. This is HIS?!"
"How does a guild territory look like that?!"
The collective astonishment surged past a boiling point as the official mercenary army crossed into Ebonreach’s effective engagement arc.
Hooves thundered across the open ground, and the charging banners streamed bright beneath the looming shadow.
At Kael’s silent, effortless command, the archers lining the walls loosed as one.
A howling tempest of enspelled shafts screamed downward, blanketing the charging formation in a lethal, sun-blocking rain of death.
The sound alone was enough to make seasoned warriors flinch, a rising shriek of air split by thousands of arrowheads.
Days of aggressive conscription had swelled Ebonreach’s garrison, with archers forming the core: six thousand Starborn bowmen stationed along the parapets.
Individually hovering near level forty, they were evenly matched against the vanguard charging their walls, proving the ideal countermeasure for a force of this terrifying magnitude.
A heartbeat later, the heavy siege towers awoke.
Massive runic ballista bolts, thick as a timber beam and glowing with condensed kinetic energy, plunged through the atmosphere like falling stars.
Each projectile tore clean through both horse and rider, turning flesh and steel into bursts of blinding white dissolution. The night flashed bright as noon with every impact.
Under that merciless storm of fire, the charging ranks bled heavily before ever closing the distance.
Scarcely two-thirds survived the approach, arriving battered, their health bars hanging by a thread regardless of heavy plating.
Riderless mounts veered wildly through the formation, and the survivors pressed on with ragged breath and trembling grips.
The Void Cataclysm met the survivors head-on. A single Cataclysmic Stomp scoured a massive sector of the field clean in an instant, the ground heaving like the surface of a storm-tossed sea.
Cascades of shattered loot glittered across the churned mud, scattered like fallen stars among the wreckage.
They wanted a display of absolute force. Very well. Kael’s lips curved into a cold, humorless line. Let them experience the full weight of their ambition.
He unsummoned restraint, loosing the remainder of his roster into the fray.
The Thunder Roc plummeted from the stratosphere, wings wreathed in screaming plasma as it unleashed a devastating Thunderfall directly into the enemy mass.
Golden lightning tore unchecked across the field, wiping out dozens of health bars simultaneously and leaving the air sharp with the smell of scorched ozone.
Lyra materialized upon the parapet, her longbow singing in a relentless, metronomic cadence, every arrow finding the vital gaps of targets already faltering.
The Wraithlord tore through the chaos astride his skeletal mount, his halberd reaping life while Grim Harvest fed every strike directly back into his own vitality, cleaving a trench through the enemy vanguard as though no resistance existed.
The Hollow Emissary drifted through the slaughter like an apparition woven from pure shadow, flickering between targets with scythe-strokes that extinguished life instantaneously.
Periodically, it unleashed The Wailing Host, loosing a tempest of spectral wails that tore through the enemy formations like a razor through silk.
Between Ebonreach’s organic defenses and a roster of legendary and epic combatants operating in absolute synchronization, Kael had single-handedly halted a hundred-thousand-strong elite army in its tracks.
The advance had shuddered to a standstill beneath the floating fortress. The spectacle went viral globally within minutes.
"Okay. He just single-handedly held off a full frontal charge from a hundred thousand players. Someone explain how that’s not cheating."
"This is like watching one man wrestle an avalanche to a standstill."
"That’s the OFFICIAL army, though. Is nobody worried about provoking actual authority here?"
"If Unrivaled’s not worried about it, why would you be?"
"Fair point, honestly."
"Officials threw a hundred thousand troops at this to flex and establish dominance, probably. Didn’t account for walking straight into him instead."
"Rough night to pick a fight with the wrong guy."While the commentary erupted across the networks, an entirely different drama played out far from the peering eyes of the cameras.
Upon a distant ridge overlooking the valley, a heavy-set commander clad in obsidian armor sat his mount, watching the slaughter unfold with an expression chiseled from absolute, freezing malice.
The firelight below flickered across his dark plate, and his gauntleted fists tightened slowly on the reins.
He spat into the dirt, his voice dropping into a harsh, uncompromising register.
"Deploy all four strike teams. Raven. Wolf. Viper. Ghost. I want those companions neutralized. Now."
