Ashes of the star forge
Chapter 216: From Every Side
The smaller ones still fell to a single clean cut.
Elara had stopped counting them. There was no point. Every time she dropped one, the dark simply delivered another. She moved in short, violent bursts — cut, step, cut — never staying in the same place long enough for the heavier ones to pin her. The ground under her boots was already slick with fluid and broken plating. Her arms burned. The deep cut on her thigh sent a bright spike of pain every time she pushed off it. She ignored all of it.
Then the pressure changed.
It did not come from one direction.
Left. Right. Center.
All at once.
Elara felt the air shift on three sides in the same breath. She killed the one coming straight at her with a rising thrust through the neck gap, then had to throw herself sideways as a thick limb swept through the space from the left. The wind of it pulled at her clothes. Before she could fully recover, something heavy crashed in from the right. She caught the strike on the flat of her blade and felt the shock slam all the way into her shoulders. Her boots slid. She dropped low, cut the attacker’s lead knee, and rolled clear as a third body tried to crush the space she had just left.
They were no longer coming in waves she could thin out.
They were coming in a ring.
Elara stopped trying to create space and started trying to break the ring before it closed. She picked the weakest point — two smaller Colossi overlapping on her left — and exploded through them. One cut. Two. A third reverse stroke that opened a throat. For a moment there was a gap. She drove into it, breathing hard, blade already moving for the next body.
The gap closed behind her almost immediately.
A larger Colossus stepped into the space she had just cleared, using its bulk like a door. Elara felt the trap form. The smaller ones pressed from the flanks while the heavy one kept her from breaking outward. She killed two more in close quarters, took a deep rake across the ribs for the trouble, and had to climb the corpse of the second one just to get enough height to cut the larger beast under the arm. The plating there was thicker than she expected. Her blade bit, but not deep enough. The creature swung. She jumped clear an instant before the limb would have broken her spine against the ground.
She landed hard. Pain flared white through her injured thigh. She forced the leg to take weight anyway.
The dark kept delivering more bodies.
Elara’s breathing had turned harsh and open-mouthed. The clean precision she had started with was fraying under the simple math of numbers. Every full-power cut cost her something she could not replace. Every block sent numbness further up her arms. She could feel the slow failure building the same way she used to feel it on long colony jobs when the body started borrowing from places it could not afford.
She changed tactics again.
Instead of finishing every large one, she crippled and moved. Knees. Elbows. The thinner gaps under the arms. Leave them broken and thrashing so the smaller ones had to climb over their own. It was uglier. It left enemies still alive behind her. But it kept her from being buried under the time a clean kill required.
It worked.
For a while.
Then the Colossi adapted.
The smaller ones stopped charging in blindly. They started herding — pushing her toward the heavier shapes instead of trying to take her themselves. Elara realized it a second too late. She cut down two that tried to flank her and found herself driven straight into the path of a much larger specimen. The thing hit like a falling wall. She blocked the first strike and felt both arms go numb to the elbows. The second strike tore the blade out of line and opened a line of fire across her shoulder. She dropped, rolled under its stance, and hamstrung it with a desperate reverse cut. The beast collapsed forward. She barely crawled clear before the weight would have pinned her.
Blood ran freely down her arm now. Her grip on the blade was sticky and less certain than it should have been.
She rose anyway.
Left. Right. Center.
They were still coming.
Elara set her feet on the slick stone, brought the blade back to center, and felt the continuous tremor of mass moving through the dark toward her. The test had stopped testing whether she could kill. It was testing whether she could keep killing after the body started to fail.
She exhaled once, sharp and controlled, and moved to meet the next body before it could set its feet.
