Chapter 277: Chapter 76: Old Acquaintance (3)

"With both arms intact, you will surely be even more valiant," she said, looking at Liang Qiang. "Mr. Liang, life is full of hardship. I ask that you set aside your family grudges and personal grievances. Serve the people and protect the peace of Great Xia. The country will surely not treat you unfairly."

’Is she trying to make peace with me?’ Liang Qiang averted his gaze. "The law found me guilty. I dare not complain. I can only do my utmost to earn merit and atone for my crimes."

Of course, Chu Zhao didn’t believe he had no complaints, but there was no need to say any more.

She had saved Liang Qiang by a stroke of luck, preventing him from losing an arm. She hoped he would remember her kindness. It would be best if she and the Liang Family could coexist peacefully. But if not, in this lifetime, she would absolutely not let the Liang Family take anything from her.

"General Liang, it’s getting late," Chu Zhao said. "You should head back to camp and have your injuries treated."

Liang Qiang didn’t respond, seemingly lost in thought.

’What he’d said earlier was too harsh.’

’Regardless of the truth, this girl had saved his arm.’

’He should thank her.’

’And apologize to her. The last time they met in the Capital City, his attitude hadn’t been very good.’

’What was so wrong with her being on good terms with the Xie family? Everyone seeks their own advantage. Wasn’t he the same?’

’It was rare for them to meet on the battlefield like this. This was probably fate.’

’If it was fate, he couldn’t miss this chance.’

’There was no one else around at this moment. They were old acquaintances. Just now, she had called him ’Mr. Liang’ again and again. In her eyes, he was still Mr. Liang. So in his eyes, she was still Miss Chu.’

"Chu—" He turned his head, about to speak.

A woman’s voice, louder than his, cut in. "—Miss, Ah Jiu is back!"

’Ah Jiu?’ Liang Qiang’s voice was drowned out. He stopped, watching as the girl’s eyes lit up like stars.

"What took you so long? Did it take that much time to chase the remnants?" she said, turning to leave. After a few steps, she looked back at Liang Qiang. "General Liang, take good care of your wounds. Although there was an incident with the Vanguard Army, your contributions will still be reported truthfully."

Liang Qiang lowered his head. "I thank you for your grace, My Lady."

Her footsteps hurried away, and her voice was heard no more. Liang Qiang raised his head and saw someone striding toward him through the flickering lights ahead.

Whether in the dim alleyways of the Capital City or the gloomy night of the Border County battlefield, Liang Qiang recognized the young General at a single glance.

Xie Yanlai.

Xie Yanlai stood tall and straight, hands clasped behind his back. With his pale face and black armor, he looked like a swift swallow.

The girl stood before him, circling him and looking him over.

Even without hearing her words, Liang Qiang could guess what she was saying. ’Are you hurt? Are you alright?’

’But she probably wouldn’t tell him to go see a medic. She’d insist on checking for herself.’

Sure enough, the girl reached out to grab Xie Yanlai’s arm—

Someone stepped in front of him, blocking his view.

Liang Qiang froze. He saw a woman in a worn soldier’s robe. She seemed to be looking for something, muttering, "Is there anything else we missed?"

Then she looked at him.

"Oh, there’s still a wounded soldier here," she said in surprise. "Young man, you’re badly hurt. Come with me for treatment, quickly."

This was one of Chu Zhao’s female attendants. Liang Qiang knew her; he had seen these women fighting alongside Chu Zhao with weapons in hand. After the battle ended, they would follow her to tend to the wounded.

The woman had already reached out enthusiastically to help him up.

It was the same action, but not the same person. Liang Qiang said coldly, "I don’t need it." With that, he turned and walked away.

"See that?" Xiao Man walked over, pouting. "All the people she knows are ill-tempered."

Mu Mianhong watched the young man’s retreating back and smiled. "A bad temper isn’t a big deal. What matters is the heart."

Not far away, Chu Zhao was also watching Liang Qiang’s back, pointing him out to Xie Yanlai.

"It’s Liang Qiang. Liang Qiang, remember him?" she said.

Xie Yanlai looked up at the sky. "Don’t remember. What do the people you know have to do with me?"

Chu Zhao laughed. "What do you mean, ’people I know’? You were almost engaged to his sister."

"I still don’t know him. Unlike you—" Xie Yanlai lowered his eyes to look at her, scoffing. "You pick a fight with his sister, and yet you’re so chummy with him."

"How am I being chummy with him?" Chu Zhao laughed, then tugged on his arm, her face full of glee. "Let me tell you, I saved his life."

She then told him what had happened earlier.

Xie Yanlai looked past her into the distance. Liang Qiang’s figure was already gone. ’Hmph. I saw that kid even before I got here.’

"A refined young master, fallen so low he needs you to save his life," he said, then looked down at the girl before him. "Do you think he’s grateful to you, or does he hate you even more?"

Chu Zhao shook her head. "Oh, Yanlai, don’t be so gloomy. You’re so young. Try to think about more beautiful things."

Xie Yanlai scoffed. "Of course, My Lady is beautiful and kind-hearted, always in the light. I’m different. I’m not as lucky as Your Ladyship."

Chu Zhao raised an eyebrow and grinned. "So, Ah Jiu, you do think I’m beautiful and kind-hearted."
