Another tragedy struck. First, Gao Yuan’s mother suddenly went berserk, smashing everything in the house. Afterward, his father was also diagnosed with a health problem, and the couple was sent to a sanatorium together.

His father was in better condition. His health later improved, but he continued to care for Gao Yuan’s mother.

But not long after, Gao Yuan divorced his wife, and then she disappeared.

By that time, Gao Yuan had already transferred to North City School and had been separated from his wife for a while. Later on, he was promoted with a raise and joined the education department.

Previously, their child had been left in someone else’s care, but he later brought the child to North City.

Looking at these documents, Qin Xiaolan finally understood. The old couple had actually been hired by Gao Yuan to pose as his parents.

‘Why would he lie to me?’

Qin Xiaolan knew these documents couldn’t possibly be fake, as they had all been verified by the police.

Qin Xiaolan had never been in a relationship before. Gao Yuan was her first love.

And Gao Yuan was just too perfect. When she was with him, he was incredibly considerate, always attentive to her feelings.

That was precisely why Qin Xiaolan had overlooked the fact that he’d been married before.

‘If he was a good person, and the divorce wasn’t his fault, then the fact that he’d been married before wouldn’t be a problem.’

However, Qin Xiaolan never expected the problems involved to be this huge!

She buried her face in her hands, frustrated.

She wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come.

Maybe it was because the heartbreak hadn’t reached its peak, or perhaps the disappointment hadn’t reached its limit.

But in any case, her heart felt heavy and constricted.

To think that, for the sake of being with Gao Yuan, she had even been ready to lay her cards on the table with her parents.

Even if they disagreed, she was determined to see it through.

‘A person’s life is long; you have to stand by what your heart tells you at least once.’

But looking at it now, Gao Yuan, who had repeatedly deceived her, wasn’t worth fighting for at all.

When Xu Zhi returned with a pile of food, he saw that Qin Xiaolan’s eyes were red.

The man immediately panicked. “Qin Xiaolan, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” Qin Xiaolan was a decisive person. Now that she knew Gao Yuan had been deceiving her on so many fronts, the matter she had been hesitating over for so long finally had an answer.

‘All that’s left is to go to that sanatorium tomorrow and see for myself.’

She apologized, went to wash her face, then tied her hair back with a hair tie before joining Xu Zhi to eat and chat.

Xu Zhi was shocked. ‘Women are really something else,’ he thought. ‘One moment she looked like she was about to cry, and the next she’s perfectly calm and composed.’

When he later learned that Qin Xiaolan was an English teacher, he was even more impressed.

“Being a teacher is great. You get winter and summer breaks, and you can even teach your own kids.”

The corner of Qin Xiaolan’s mouth twitched.

Xu Zhi, however, was quick on the uptake. He immediately added, “But you’re not married and don’t have kids, so you should just enjoy your life as it is now.”

Qin Xiaolan found his comment odd but didn’t press the matter. Instead, she calmly asked a few more questions about Gao Yuan.

Xu Zhi was an eager helper and had taken the initiative to do some digging beforehand, so he told Qin Xiaolan everything he knew.

“Gao Yuan studied psychology in college and likes to read detective and mystery novels. On top of that, people who knew him as a child all say he seemed to have become a completely different person.”

“A completely different person?”
