Back to the 70s: My Childhood Sweetheart Spoils Me Rotten
Chapter 1559 - 1561
After Gong Ruwen got off work, he picked up his girlfriend Chu Ling and rushed home.
Chu Ling was really excited. "You’re always saying Pingping is absolutely brilliant, I’m really looking forward to seeing him."
"Yeah, he’s a smart kid."
"Our kid definitely won’t be any worse than Pingping in the future." Every time she saw photos of Pingping and the others, it was impossible to say she didn’t want to get married and have children soon.
But she also knew there was no point rushing it; they had to wait until after Chu Ling graduated before they could put this on the agenda.
Wouldn’t be worse than Pingping? Chu Ling felt their genes weren’t bad either, their kid definitely wouldn’t be inferior.
But all those thoughts completely vanished once she saw Pingping in person.
She really hadn’t expected there could be a kid this smart in the world. "He actually argues with people."
She didn’t know who pretended to say something bad about An An. Pingping had been laughing just before, laughing his head off, and suddenly his expression changed.
He started babbling nonstop in some alien language no one could understand. Even though no one could make out a word, it didn’t matter—just from Pingping’s agitated expression you could tell the little guy was riled up.
"His tongue is something else." Chu Ling finally understood why Ni Zi always worries whenever she talks about Pingping, afraid that if her son starts talking one day, as his mom she won’t be able to win an argument with him.
"Exactly." Renee had a "finally someone believes me" look all over her face.
Zhao Gang and the others didn’t see it that way. "Pingping really is a good big brother. See, the moment he hears someone say something bad about An An, he jumps right in."
"Yeah, he’ll absolutely be good to An An in the future."
"Our Pingping is a proper big brother." An An’s health hasn’t been great; although she’s doing pretty well now, they still worry about all sorts of things. Seeing Pingping protecting her like this is also a kind of reassurance for An An.
See, that’s grandparents for you. All they ever think about is how amazing their grandchild is, and couldn’t care less about how much pressure this chatterbox of a grandson puts on the parents.
Gong Ruwen watched his agitated little nephew, still feeling completely dazed. "Don’t you guys find it strange? How old is Pingping, and he already understands adult conversations?"
"And it’s not like you’re talking about simple stuff either." Gong Ruwen had never been a dad, but it’s not like he hasn’t taken care of plenty of kids since he was little.
Even though the twins are really something now, at least before they turned two you honestly couldn’t tell they were especially smart—basically just like lots of other kids.
So how come it’s totally different with Pingping? Gong Ruwen really couldn’t figure it out.
Renee was startled. She also believed their genes meant Pingping and An An wouldn’t be dumb, but without the Space Water, Renee didn’t think Pingping would be this smart.
It’s just that since they’re in the United States and with Pingping every day, of course they don’t feel surprised—only that Pingping and An An gradually got smarter.
But from Gong Ruwen and the others’ point of view, it doesn’t look right. Even though she knew no one would actually uncover anything, she still couldn’t help feeling a bit guilty.
"Oh, that’s just ’cause you haven’t seen a truly smart kid." Gong Tao looked thoroughly annoyed.
"There are geniuses in this world, and Pingping and the others are geniuses."
Geniuses? Renee was left speechless by her own dad and father-in-law’s thick-skinned boasting.
It’s only because they’re family. If it were outsiders, they’d just think, aren’t you overthinking this? It’s just a coincidence—you see a baby excitedly babbling alien language and have no idea what he’s saying. Maybe at that moment he just happened to feel like talking.
"Whether he’s a genius or not isn’t what matters. What matters is what happens later." Seeing everyone in the family getting all worked up calling Pingping a genius, Zhao Xuran hurried to pour cold water on it.
Seriously, if this little guy ever found out, who knows how smug he’d get.
There’s no shortage these days of kids who are brilliant when they’re little but end up accomplishing nothing when they grow up.
If he could choose, Zhao Xuran would prefer his son to be someone who slowly climbs to the top through his own efforts, ideally with plenty of setbacks along the way.
Even though Zhao Xuran’s cold-water routine annoyed Gong Tao and the others, once Zhao Gang thought of certain things, he stopped talking too.
Zhan Jing watched the atmosphere drop like a rock. "Pingping’s education is your responsibility."
Raising kids is a big deal—if you do a good job, fine; if you don’t, it turns into a big problem.
Zhao Gang actually sounded a bit grumpy. So what, he’s not capable of educating his grandchildren properly? Haven’t you seen how great Xuran and Guang Ran turned out? And you don’t even think about the fact that they still have to raise their kids, which depends on whether they’ve got the time or not.
Of course Zhao Xuran noticed his dad’s meaningful look. He certainly wasn’t going to tell his dad that once Pingping gets bigger, he plans to take him along to various occasions he can attend, to give the boy some appropriate training.
For now he’d just let his dad show off a bit more and keep dreaming his happy dreams.
Pingping might be smart, but he couldn’t follow that much of the conversation; he only knew they were definitely talking about something to do with him.
Pingping spun his little brain for a long time, trying hard to listen, but he just couldn’t understand what they were saying, and it made him furious.
"Ahhhh."
"Ahhhh." Pingping was unhappy and kept letting out protest noises.
Young Master Pingping was displeased and voicing his objections, and the silly An An, who’d been giggling off to the side, also lifted her head, trying hard to watch her big brother.
An An has always followed Pingping’s lead. Hearing her brother’s protest, of course she was quick to join in.
"Are they hungry?" Seeing the two kids crying out nonstop, Zhan Jing’s first reaction was that they were hungry.
Hungry? No way. "Didn’t we just feed them milk?" Cai Meina looked puzzled.
Even with a good appetite, they wouldn’t start fussing again so soon after eating, right?
"A kid who likes to eat is blessed." Zhao Gang declared it a good thing that his grandkids loved food; that way they’d grow faster and become nice and plump.
Her own kids aren’t plump enough already? If this doesn’t count as chubby, then what does?
Honestly, if they weren’t currently in the "milk-fat" stage, Renee would absolutely step in and slim her kids down. It’s fine to be a bit skinny when they’re little, but once they grow up, then they absolutely need to be on the slimmer side.
"Life might be cozy for him these first few years, but in a few years things won’t be so cushy." Watching his nephew howling nonstop, Gong Ruwen suddenly felt he was actually protesting.
"Of course it won’t be cushy. He’s got heavy duties ahead, he has to work hard at studying." Zhao Xuran might not fully understand his son, but he knew this kid was basically putting on a show.
This kid is really lucky he can’t talk yet—otherwise he’d definitely be a master tattletale.
Gong Ruwen patted his brother-in-law’s shoulder. Earlier he’d been pretty jealous that his brother-in-law had such a clever son, but right now he honestly didn’t feel jealous at all.
"Having a smart son is a good thing." Gong Ruwen really looked forward to watching Zhao Xuran and Pingping’s interactions in the future—those scenes were going to be worth the price of admission.
Mocking him, is he? Zhao Xuran coolly patted the shoulder area Gong Ruwen had just touched. "Not everyone gets to have a smart son."
What, is that a dig at him? Zhao Xuran’s words stung Gong Ruwen—this was beyond outrageous.
Hmph, he refuses to believe he can’t produce a smart son. Isn’t it just about eating more sea fish during pregnancy? Does he look stupid? Whatever Ni Zi did back when she was pregnant, they can just do the same thing now and it’ll be fine.
