Chapter 1986: Chapter 1988: Picking Up Old Clothes

Everyone is asking when Qi Taiguo will return; Cheng Su also wants to know, but she has no idea when he will come back.

Deng Weixia noticed Cheng Su’s brief moment of distraction and melancholy and felt a bit perplexed, wondering if he said something wrong.

Liu Wenjing caught his gaze and nudged his elbow, changing the topic: "I just saw Xiao Qi has grown a lot, looks smart, even though he’s younger than our Er Bao, he’s much more clever!"

The little child, whether in attire or demeanor and temperament, is not just a notch above, so is it true that children from wealthy families and children from poor families are different?

Is everything determined from birth?

Liu Wenjing glanced at her quiet little son beside her, munching on a pumpkin cake, and sighed silently in her heart.

Comparing oneself to others only leads to frustration!

After sitting with the Cheng family for a while, because Deng Weixia had to return to work and Gou Sheng’s school was about to end, the family bid farewell.

Before leaving, Mother Cheng casually mentioned that Cheng Su had some clothes to give away, and she was about to pick a few items, asking Liu Wenjing if she wanted to choose some too, while murmuring: "This wasteful girl, the clothes are still new!"

Liu Wenjing was taken aback, looking at the spread-out clothes from Mother Cheng, which were quite new and nice-looking. Were they really not needed?

She glanced at her own dull, grayish indeed thread fabric—Cheng Su’s clothes!

Cheng Su glanced at her and smiled: "After I had a child, some of them don’t fit anymore. I’m a bit taller than you, so if Wenjing doesn’t mind, pick a few, there are some winter clothes that might fit too."

Liu Wenjing blushed, tugging at her clothes’ corner, saying: "This..."

"Quick, come pick. She’s going to give them away anyway." Mother Cheng pulled her over, directly grabbing a red sweater to compare on her, saying: "You’re young, this color suits you, wear it."

Liu Wenjing touched the texture of the clothing; it’s very soft, thinking she had never worn such nice clothes!

She glanced sideways at Cheng Su, watched her talking with Deng Weixia, and looked at her little son, biting her lip, then joined Mother Cheng in the clothing selection process.

They were Cheng Su’s clothes, not anyone else’s; all clean and trendy, wearing them for some time would save money.

After picking a whole big bag of clothes and leaving, Cheng Su playfully complained to her mother: "Mom, really, people might not necessarily want my clothes; why say it like that?"

"Why, giving it to anyone is still giving? She’s your cousin-in-law, our own family, what’s there to fear?" Mother Cheng answered, puzzled.

"But I have worn them before; who knows what people think, even if they look down on it, it’s picking up old things." Cheng Su replied.

It wasn’t that she was reluctant to give, but it was all familiar relatives; letting them pick up old things felt awkward, and who knows if they’d silently criticize her for looking down on them!

They are all relatives, seeing each other frequently—there’s always a bit of awkwardness!

Mother Cheng scoffed: "What’s wrong with that? If these clothes were ragged, then yes, it’d be embarrassing. But they’re all new; giving to someone else wouldn’t feel awkward, and it wouldn’t be considered picking up old things, right? In this family, being poor, each sibling picks old clothes to wear, no different. When you were younger, your brother even wore your floral jacket. People must face reality; vanity, is that something to eat? Your clothes are not only new but also of good quality; what you buy outside isn’t as good. This is a sum of money saved; isn’t it better for her to do something else with it? If she’s too proud to take, I’d look down on her even more."

Cheng Su chuckled, understanding her logic—that if it were her, without the means to buy, she’d probably pick up old things too. Vanity, in front of reality, is all superficial.
